Animal Rescuer Arrested for not Returning a Wounded Dog

    http://www.idahostatesman.com/235/story/1004811.html

Troy A. Jackson, 36, who has headed the Boise-based animal rescue group Northwest Animal Companion for more than a decade, was arrested Wednesday and charged with felony grand theft for taking an injured dog and its puppies from Eastern Idaho's Jefferson County.

Jackson was released from the Ada County jail on $25,000 bond. He's due in court on Dec. 22, he said.

X-rays indicated that the dog did have a broken front leg and pelvis. She was spayed at the clinic.

$25,000?! There have been people who have raped children who don't get bail this high. The owner have friends in high places?

Not that I claim to be an expert but I've never heard of a dog breaking her pelvis and one of her legs giving birth. Clearly abused and not good for the puppies if she can't even make it to her food and water bowl due to the pain.
Felony charge would mean the owners estimate the value of each one to be pretty high, maybe they should have treated them better.

Not a lot of facts but I'm siding with the man who has been running a shelter for over a decade and the injuries cited.

$25,000 is insane for this "crime" ! Unless he broke in, tried killing someone and set the place on fire when he took the dog and puppies...I'll be interested to see how this one plays out.

What the heck??? They have charged an animal rescuer with a crime but not the animals owner who was letting the dog sit and suffer? And how in the world was the mama dog injured?

The mother dog was supposedly hit by a car that resulted in her injuries. She was kept outside by her owner, Raul Torres, while she suffered. He was investigated by the Sheriff's deputies because of a neighbor complaint.

Sheriff's deputies talked with Raul Torres, the dog's owner, and allowed him a few days to get the nursing dog the help she needed before pressing any animal neglect-type charges.

The dog had two broken legs, broken pelvis, gave birth to puppies, kept outside during a very cold spell - while suffering - nursing puppies - and the deputies agreed veterinary treatment could wait A FEW DAYS. 'scuze me??

Apparently Mr. Jackson offered Torres help with veterinary treatment which he agreed to, AND then offered an additional $2500.00 for the mom and puppies. That's when theft charges were filed against him.

It's obvious the charges against Troy Jackson were filed to draw attention away from the obvious neglect by the owner and the piss-poor decision by the deputies in assessing the situation.

I will be following this closely. This is almost identical to the case of Tammy Grimes-Thayne of Dogs Deserve Better. It did not go well for her.

Also, this just in the news:

BOISE - Troy Jackson, the man who drove from Boise to pick-up an injured dog in Jefferson County, has hired Chuck Peterson as his attorney. Peterson is the same man who handles the Guantanamo Bay cases.

Jackson tells Eyewitness News that he has also been contacted by the producers of the Oprah and Ellen Degeneres shows.

Jackson also says his attorney has spoiled plans that would put Jackson in jail during Christmas. He adds the courts intentionally gave him the wrong dates to appear, and could have revoked his bail as a result.

Ohhhh DogMom. That video of the dying Doogie has me in tears. They just wont stop coming. Doogie looks just like my first dog (the first that was mine, not my family's dog) Gypsy. I found her IN a dumpster at a daycare center when I was a teen. Took out the trash, threw it in the dumpster and heard a yelp. Looked inside and there she was. Somebody had actually thrown her away like trash. I climbed in and and picked her out of the trash. My boss ordered me to take the dog to the pound. I put her in my car and she laid her sweet head in my lap as I was driving. I took her home and bathed her and put a christmas bow on her head. When my parents got home all they said was "Whats her name"? They let me keep her, no questions asked. I think they realized how much I needed to help this dog. No way was she taking a onee way trip to the pound. I had her for 7 years before she passed away. No idea how old she was. I know this is off topic , but just looking at Doobie and remembering Gypsy being literally thrown away....... I hope one day animal abuse and neglect is treated like the serious crime that it is. RIP Gypsy aka Woogie Woo

Boise animal welfare leader charged with grand theft gives puppies to sheriff, will fight charges

Troy Jackson, executive director of Northwest Animal Companions, was arraigned on a charge of felony grand theft in Jefferson County on Tuesday.

Jackson is accused of misrepresenting himself and not returning a dog and her puppies to their Jefferson County owner. Jackson has said his only intention was to get the mother of the puppies veterinary care for injuries believed to have been suffered in a collision with a car; he said the owner helped him load the dog and her five puppies into his vehicle. He'd been communicating with the owner by phone and fax, offering to help get the puppies adopted. Jackson was arrested at his Boise home on Dec. 9.

Tuesday morning, before his court appearance, Jackson says he dropped the five puppies off at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. The puppies' mother, Barbie, is still in a foster home in the Boise area; she needs surgery for a broken pelvis, Jackson said.

Jackson said the courthouse was full Tuesday morning, and he was given three petitions that Jefferson County residents had started.

"One is a demand for charges of cruelty and neglect against the dogs' owner, one is to have the prosecutor drop the charges against me, and one is to have the sheriff and prosecutor removed," Jackson said Tuesday afternoon. "There are Jefferson county citizens who I had never met and never had any contact with."

Jackson said he has retained prominent attorney Chuck Peterson. He said a supporter in North Carolina is footing the costs of his legal defense. Jackson has no plans to take a plea bargain.

Many have asked whether the dogs' owner will be charged with neglect/animal cruelty for failure to get Barbie treatment after she was injured. Jackson said a veterinary assessment of her injuries indicated that she had been injured several weeks before he brought her to Boise for treatment.

Sheriff Blair Olsen said Tuesday that he has not received any official veterinary records from a licensed veterinarian. He says he has received some "unofficial notes."

He said the sheriff's office has documentation showing that Torres tried to seek treatment for his dog the day before Jackson showed up to offer help.

"We also have documentation that the dog was mobile and being cared for," Olsen said.

For those reasons, the sheriff said he has no plans to pursue neglect or cruelty charges against Torres.

Christ almighty, someone ought to come after that sheriff in the night and break his legs and pelvis, and leave him to fend for himself. Fucktard.

I say Jackson ought to go on EVERY TV show he can get himself on, and spread the word.

This is just an assumption, not fact but I believe this sheriff is one of these soulless people who think animals are just property and therefore not entitled to justice.

Well, I think in Mr. Torres' case it's not who you know, but who you blow.

Good god, how can anyone let a dog and her babies suffer like that.

Boise Animal Advocate A Free Man, Felony Charges Dropped

Felony charges are dropped in a controversial Jefferson County case and for some that means a celebration begins.

This comes as the Boise man accused of stealing a litter of puppies is now a free man.

Tuesday afternoon, Jackson's attorney received documents from the Jefferson County Prosecutors office saying they dismissed the case.

Jackson credits the community's support for standing behind him.

"We're celebrating tonight because we've actually had a victory in this case and we can declare that now and move on doing our work as animal welfare advocates. I will continue doing what I've been doing for 12 years and the truth will always prevail and I hope and think that will always be the case," explained Troy Jackson.

Jackson tells us a private party adopted Barbie and her puppies.

FINALLY some good news!!!!!!!!! Not only were the charges against this "saint" dropped but the mom and pups were adopted!! Thank GOD for this man!!! We need more people just like him-we need more voices for all the poor abused and negelcted animals. As for the POS who had the mom suffering to begin with-he should be charged w/ cruelty/neglect (a charge that never has enough of a punoshment behind it) and he should NEVER EVER be allowed to have another pet of any kind!

This is the second one I ran across in the past month. A woman in Savannah stole her neighbors neglected dog and was charged with theft. The stupid owner went on the news complaining about how HE was the victim. The dog had two types of worms, mange, advanced heartworm disease, and not UTD on all his shots. The dog was so sick he was humanely PTS.

The prosecutors there also dropped the charges against the woman. Here is the article.

About time the right thing was done in this case. I hate to say it but it seems these days in cases of abused animals AND children you almost have to take the law into your own hands before anything is done. By the time the law usually catches up, many times the animal or child being abused is dead.

Yikes! That could have been me!

There was a thread in GD and I think it was DM that told ne to be careful or I could be charged. But ya know, it would have been worth it to save the dog.

    Kudos for the advocate!

Thank God! And thanks to the person who paid for this man's attorney. It's obvious that the arrogant but worthless sheriff was railroading him. I pray that the worthless POS gets voted out of office.

If anyone was wondering who the private party was that adopted Barbie and her pups, here ya go.

Indiana Jones and Ally McBeal Adopt Rescued Idaho Dog

Today, Troy Jackson revealed to BW that none other than actor Harrison Ford and his fiancee, Calista Flockhart, adopted the rescued dogs. Ford spends much of his free time just over the Idaho border in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

“They’ve gone from rags to riches,” Jackson said. “They’ll live a better life than you and me ever will.”
