Angry It wasn't a pitbull this time, but the child still died

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A rottweiler attacked and killed a Florida toddler when the boy reached to pick up a cookie he had dropped, authorities said.

Kevin Doll of the Pasco County Sheriff's Office said 20-month-old Dallas Walters was at his aunt's home during a party Saturday night. Doll said the dog attacked Dallas when the boy dropped a cookie and went to grab it.

Family members at the party managed to pry the dog off the child and then took him to a hospital. The boy later died.

Animal control has taken possession of the dog.

So sad! Another resource guarder, and as we all know resource guarders are very dangerous.( ANd Dallas is my niece's name, first time since the movie "The Outsiders" that I have heard of a little boy named Dallas.)

Poor sweet child. A terrible, terrible ending. I'm not a fan of Rottweiler's, they scare me awful.

Rest in peace baby Dallas Walters.

I had a rottweiler when I was 18. He was abandoned at a kennel by his owners when he was 11 weeks old. They kept paying the bill until he was 1, so that is where he lived until they stopped paying the bill. Anyhow I adopted him and he was a mess. He became a great dog after a couple of years and participated in many childrens programs. Having said that I would never have left him alone with children, and for the most part I believe rottweilers can be dangerous. They are large and strong and fiercely protective of their owners which can lead to trouble. And when you throw in a dog that is a resource guarder to boot, you have a recipe for disaster. Shame on the owners for not locking the dog up while they had so much company. Just stupid!

Shit, a resource guarder. That absolutely gives me the shivers--a big dog + resource guarding = too damn much potential for heartache. I think that might be a deal breaker for me if I were contemplating adopting a dog. There are lots of behavioral issues I would be comfortable working on, but I think a resource guarder would scare me, and we all know how well it works out when you're afraid of your own dog...

I am with you Lizard. There too many great dogs out there looking for homes for me to deal with resource guarders. They scare me because you never know when they will decide something belongs to them, it could be their food but it could just as easily become your couch where they have decided to lay down or your shoe that they are laying next to. Nope, won't have one of em in my house.

Pit bulls have started outsourcing their attacks I see. Very wise of them.

You could eradicate all dogs "koochie". And spiders. And snakes. And humans - they are pretty dangerous too.

pixie you are right they are but people get so comfortable with dogs they live like humans now...

its just so dangerous to have them children who arent part of the *dogs family unit*....children especially todders are so unpredictable and can playfully grab a sore ear or step on a dogs foot and the dog will react and bite.

    I have a chow whose:
    Not child aggressive
    Not dog aggressive
    Not cat aggressive.

I walk Bear every day. Our usual route takes us past a place where two of the cutest little 3 year old red headed twins live. They just love Bear. They come out and pet him, hug him, pat him and occassionally pull his tail. He's very patient and just gives them doggie kisses and wags his tail.
A few days ago this 50 pound dog was set upon by 6 little chihuahuas. One of them bit him on the face. He jumped back looking surprised but he still didn't bite or even bark.

The people who we got him from had 13 (yes, THIRTEEN) children. They couldn't keep him due to a housing problem. He just loves kids.

Now, having said that , I STILL would NOT leave him alone with a child. And, if he were present at a party, he would be right next to me while people petted him. Then out he goes. I wouldn't leave any dog (even a chihuahua) out with a group of kids. They're dogs. By a dogs rule, they nip at whatever bothers them.

    Poor little angel.

Not typically. It happens...but not enough for me to feel as if I have to fear them. I mean you can't bubble your kids. In all my years with dogs I have only been bitten by a little yapper dog.

Most dog bites happen because people are stupid with dogs.

I wish people would understand some thing about dogs. They have teeth. It is true, I have seen them. Will YOUR dog bite? Maybe, maybe not. Can YOUR dog bite? YES he/she can. Always remember that there is a first time for everything.

Mines a resource guarder. I had him since he was 7 months. He has just turned 3 and he's just started to *get it*, as in when I say drop it I mean DROP IT. It took a long time to break and it will be life long training thereafter.

    Unhappy

    Dallas Walters (at 8 months)
"I ran over there, pulled the dog off him," said the boy's father Andrew Walters, "I tried to beat the hell out of him."

Walters rushed his son to Northbay Hospital. Doctors did everything they could, but the brutality of the attack was just too much for little Dallas' body to overcome.
Pasco County Animal Control took the rottweiler, which Walters said he wants put down.
    Video here too:

So sad, the Dad and Mom are pitiful...
Dallas Lee Walters was a fighter, to the end.

Clinging to life at Northbay Hospital after being mauled by a 100-pound Rottweiler, the toddler must have heard his parents telling him they loved him and to keep on fighting. Shortly before he died, the 20-month-old boy raised his arm in the air and made a fist.

"He was trying his hardest, and he was just being Dallas," his father, Andrew Walters, said Sunday. "He was very headstrong and never gave up on anything.

"He was a strong kid. He fought really hard."

But the attack took too much fight out of him.
The Rottweiler-Labrador mix came out quickly from behind the sofa and, in an instant, was on top of the boy. The dog was supposed to have been chained up in the backyard; somehow, though, it had gotten loose, and the family had opened the door to let in some air.

    Rest in Peace, Baby Dallas!

Oh so it wasn't a rott, it was a rott x lab mix, and it was *supposed* to be chained up in the yard during the party.

I wonder if this dog was kept chained in the back yard all of the time? That would explain a lot here.

    Poor little man and family!
So, it wasn't a 'breed' related issue. Duh. I should have known a chain was involved in this poor little boys attack. Don't have a dog if you plan to keep it on a chain.

    Before You Chain Your Dog
Dogs on Chains, why its not a good idea...

Dogs who are chained run a much higher risk of biting and are more likely to be the dogs that run off and don't come back when called.

Why? Chaining a dog goes against its natural instincts. Dogs were not meant to be chained. Most become protective of the area around them and in some cases, down right mean, even to their owners. They feel confined, trapped and it drives them crazy. They are harder to train and some appear to be literally un-trainable when really they are just going stir crazy. Most chained dogs will take off on you any chance they can get off the chain. And why not? Coming back means they have to go back on the chain and they want to enjoy the freedom if even for a little while. Not all dogs will be biters and runners if chained, but all dogs would be happier, with a better temperament, if they were not chained.

I wish people wouldnt lump breeds into catagories. Any dog can be mean no matter what breed they are. Dogs like humans need training to be productive members of society and family. Ive had a dog my whole life and have never had one of my children bit. My german Shep/pit mix sits on the back deck and helps watch the kids when they are in the yard playing. My kids can have friends over without fear of my dog being anything but kissable.

Its sad about this little boy it really is. But puppers sounds like he wasnt trained to be around lil ones. He should have been put in a room away from the party. Dont blame the dog blame the owners.

It's a coverup.. the pitbull lovers of america bribed the cops to make sure the breed of the dog would be stated as anything other than pitbull.
Kidding aside, what a sad story. Resource guarders and little kids don't mix. A dog that you have to keep chained up to keep away from people... isn't a dog you should have if you know ANY little kids.

Trust me the first time a chihuahua or a yorkie mauls some one to death it will be on every front page in America as well as on every news channel. And they will definitely name the breed and the size of the dog too.
