Police: Teen charged with animal cruelty

A Fair Haven teen was arrested and released on citation Thursday after police say he threw a puppy against a wall Friday night, resulting in it being euthanized, said Fair Haven Police Chief William Humphries.

Police say Garth Roberts, 18, became angry with a 16-week-old black Labrador retriever after the puppy urinated on his bed, according to a press release from the Fair Haven Police Department.

Roberts then picked up the puppy and threw it against a wall, causing injury.

Those injuries led to the dog being put down because Roberts didn't have enough money to pay doctors to fix the puppy's broken femur, according to Humphries.

A resident notified the police of the incident on Sunday, according to police.

Roberts was released with a citation, charged with animal cruelty and is expected to appear in Rutland District Court Jan. 25.

As much as I want to beat the shit out of this punk, I have an issue with the veterinarian. Why couldn't the vet have the broken leg set and turn the pup over to a rescue or shelter? He put the pup down because there was no money to pay for the injuries. I know times are tough and overhead costs are high, but, there was no excuse for euthanizing this poor animal.

The vet is a POS. There was no reason why it couldnt have been fixed and given a new home.

ABSOLUTELY RIGHT Dogmom-this asshole needs to pay for what he did to that poor innocent pup-but the vet just out him down because he could not pay to ahve his femer fixed?! Makes me SICK SICK SICK - what about payment plans? What about just being a good human being and doing what is right??????!!!!!!!! On Sept 29, 2008 I rushed my dog of 15 years to the vet, he was quite ill and dying, I knew it was his time and he was suffering, my cat and I stayed with him all night. If I left his side even for a moment to use the bathroom he would start yelping, it was heart wrenching. So Is tayed with him all night-right by his side, petting and soothing him. Anyway when the vets office opened up we picked him up and broughht him in knowing I had to make a decision that I HATED and never wanted to make, but his suffering was too great and I wanted him at peace. Now I had been bringing my dog to this vet for 10 years, along w/ my cats and he saw my friends and families pets as well. The price he wanted to eithanize him was STEEP, and money was tight BUT i was getting paid in 2 days. I asked if I could give half now/then in cash and the other half write them a dated check for my payday (which was in 2 days) and they could take it right from my account then - I got a big fat NO - they wanted the outragouse amount in full right then and there even tho knowing me for 10 years. I was crying over my dog and appaled by this vet all at the same time. So what - you would send me home with my poor miserable dog who at this point could not even lift his head, was suffering?? I was aghast! I paid the vet in full - along with a bunch of bounced check fees to other places because of this vet fee - and NEVER went back to him. If you are not in it for the animals, then you should NOT be in the business.
