Baby found dead in locked car in Miami

The child found dead Thursday in a locked car in front of a home on Northwest Fifth Avenue in Miami was a 3-month-old baby girl who had been under her grandmother's care, police said.

The infant was found by Miami Fire-Rescue workers, who were called to the 6800 block of Northwest Fifth Avenue about 12:30 p.m. The baby was thought to have been in the car since 8:30 a.m.

The grandmother had apparently left the child in the car and gone inside the home, according to Miami police spokesman Delrish Moss.

Police Detective William Moreno said the grandmother apparently forgot the girl was in the car.

Forgotten. I won't even go there. Since she's a grandmother and older, maybe, just maybe a memory issue. I doubt the mother will leave another child with her again.

Rest in peace baby girl. So very sorry.

Mom Doesn't Blame Grandma For Baby's Death

The Miami mother of a baby girl who died after being left in a locked car for hours said she isn't blaming her mother for the death. Cindy Steffans said in a statement released Saturday that her mother, Miriam Oliveras "tried her best" to help care for the baby.

Steffans said Oliveras helped take care of the child after the baby's father was deported earlier in 2009. Steffans called it a "tragic accident that led to Wilyariz's death."

Oliveras was granted $10,000 bond one day after her arrest on a charge of aggravated manslaughter of a child. She bonded out early Friday evening. She was escorted by her boyfriend, with her head held down and her face covered, avoiding a barrage of television news cameras.

"Grandma" is WAY too young to be so "forgetful". And "Mom" doesn't blame her? Sounds kind of fishy to me.
I wonder how inconvenient this child was to them?

Hmm...okay, 49 is a little young for Alzheimers. So, my next question would be to ask whether grandma has an alcohol/drug problem. How sad that a baby had to die because she was forgotten about like she was nothing more than some trivial, unimportant object.

Not necessarily, TheDepressor... My mum is only 55 and is already showing a LOT of the symptoms. Early onset is a lot more common than people think, and it sucks A LOT.

Aww, I'm so sorry for you, your mom, and your family. I didn't realize it could be so drastic at that young of an age! I've known people in their early to mid-fifties, but they would just misplace their keys, etc. I always thought the onset was slow. That is VERY scary!

I'll probably make myself unpopular with this (more unpopular?) I read somewhere - sorry, I am not looking for the link NOW - that the number of cases of early onset alzheimer's in women in their 50's have been rising. The article was speculating that the increase has something to do with more women of that age getting flu shots.

dude that scares the shit out of me. ive had the flu twice in my life and thought i was dying. for real. the twisted thing about it was that i worked in a nursing home at the time and everybody got a flu shot. and eight residents died from the flu. the entire place was quarantined. apparently we had all gotten a different 'strain' of the flu.

UM, granny has a "boyfriend". I don't think demented old ladies date. I am going to go with saying that drug induced "forgetfulness" was how the baby ended up spending almost 6 hours (wow) in a car before anyone remembered she existed.

Twelve week old babies need to eat every 2-4 hours! I was biologically tuned into this schedule with my kids and even with my grand kids! When our Puli bitch had a litter she never left her puppies alone for more than an hour until they started to climb out of the whelping box and away from her on their own, and honesty the bitch was a very bad mother.

Now, I know this is a truly fucked up thing I am about to say, sorry in advance, but I have to say it... Mom named her baby daughter Wilyariz??? If she had spent a fraction of the time it must have taken to think up this moronic name the baby would probably still be alive.

my own mom started forgetting around the 50 year mark. small things, big things...birthdays...keys...where she parked her car....
its not that far off for a woman around that age to forget all together what they were doing....until a long time later. she doesnt have to have alzheimers to be forgetful, its just a part of growing older. not only that, she may not have been used to having the baby with her at all times..she is after all the grandmother. not all grammas take their grandchildren around with them everywhere all the time....its far too easy to condemn and blame drugs and alcohol than it is to admit that yeah, maybe someone IS that forgetful.

The Miami grandmother who was accused of leaving her 3-month-old granddaughter in a locked car for hours leading to the child's death pleaded no contest Thursday and won't face any jail time, but will be on probation for five years.

It means Miriam Oliveras who had been charged with aggravated manslaughter on a child had those charges reduced to aggravated child abuse and spend the next five years reporting with a probation officer. That could be reduced to three years if she meets the following conditions: receives mental health treatment, attend parenting classes, perform 150 community service hours and pay court costs.

The decision came down in a Miami criminal courthouse with Judge Dennis J. Murphy presiding.

[QUOTE][her mother, Miriam Oliveras "tried her best" to help care for the baby.
    /QUOTE]

Sounds to me like mom had some slight doubts of gramma's capability to begin w/ but it was easier than trying to find other arrangements for the baby. Early onset Alzheimer's or not, I still don't get how you can just forget a baby in a car. We're talking a human being - not a doll! I'm sure it happens and it's tragic, but personally, I think if you agree to be responsible for a child by damned you should fucking REMEMBER THAT CHILD!

Miami woman accepts plea deal in death of granddaughter left in hot car
A Miami woman charged with aggravated manslaughter in the death of her 3-month-old granddaughter who was left in a hot car has agreed to a plea deal, WPLG-Ch. 10 reports.
    [...]
She will spend five years on probation instead of 30 years in prison, and will undergo counseling.

Police said Oliveras forgot she left the baby, named Wilyariz, in a car outside her home on Dec. 10 for about four hours, while temperatures inside the vehicle reached above 100 degrees.

Took a look at a couple of the video's, seems to me the daughter is in complete shock, when the it wears off I bet she won't be defending her mother. I can only imagine being in that place as she ask her mother how??? She leaves baby in her care, and she herself is much dependent on her mother's help, working at McD's, doesn't give her a lot of options whom to leave her baby with. I'm not surprised with the sentencing and the plea deal. Many such similar cases charges are never filed.

Boggles my mind every time I read on such a case where a person can just leave a child for hours and NOT think once where now, did I leave baby until it's much too late. Curious if grandmother was also caring for the 2 yo at the same time and was the 2 yo in the car too.
Police say the baby was in the vehicle for about four hours before the grandmother remembered her granddaughter was still inside. Family members told CBS4's Sharrie Williams that Steffens also has a 2-year-old child.
Sadly, it is said mother has no resources to bury her baby girl, sounds like a very poor family that will likely be torn apart by this tragedy.
So sorry baby Wilyariz, you deserved to be foremost on nana's mind.

Why is this story posted in General and not True Crime?

The whole thing sounds fishy to me ..
Grandma was probably itching for a fix, thought she'd be quick, got high, forgot the kid in the car ..
I don't understand how the daughter can't be blaming the bitch?
