Dog, identified by press as a pit bull, attacks deputy in Daytona Beach.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A deputy on his way to serve papers at a home along Florida's Atlantic coast was bitten by a pit bull on the calf.

The Volusia County sheriff's officials says that the deputy was taken to a hospital after Monday's incident. The injuries were not life-threatening.

The deputy fired two shots at the animal and injured it, but it's not clear whether the dog was shot twice.

When the animal was finally caught, his owner was the only one who could pick up the dog

I wish there was more on this. Was the dog roaming loose or did the deputy let himself in a gate to serve the papers?

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A Volusia County Sheriff's deputy was hospitalized on Monday afternoon after he was attacked by a dog.

The Sheriff's Office said Deputy Stephen Spencer, in the department's civil division, was approaching a home on Kingston Avenue in Daytona Beach when a pit bull ran out through a fence and attacked him.

The dog bit the deputy on the calf before the deputy was able to fire off two shots. At least one hit the dog, but did not kill it.

Deputies said the dog's owner is cooperating with the investigation. The pit bull has been turned over to animal control.

Cripes, these are the owners I wish would have to take a course and pay a fee in order to get a dog.
Breed aside, socialize your pet. Nothing drastic, just have it so that you aren't the only person on the planet who can touch them without fear of being bitten.

If you can't do that, get a cat.

I had a friend who had a VICIOUS cat. One time I was taking care of it; went to the house, fed the cat. He seemed lonely & I petted him (didn't yet know how evil he was)...he was happy, purring - then he attacked. I wanted to smack that cat (I didn't). He was a big cat & I was afraid of him after that...Found out later he attacked other people who went to the house. One friend he really hated; he used to go after her & jump at her head. The friend was terrified of the cat & asked for the cat to be put in a room while she was visiting but the owner thought she was being silly. Stupid cat, stupid owner.

My first pit, Bullet, ran through fences. He would just run right through it, bend it up and out he went. Barely slowed him down. I couldn't even lift the fence with both hands, yet he could just run right through like it was nothing.
