WEST PALM BEACH — When a pregnant woman and her live-in boyfriend were roused by a telephone call from the man's ex-girlfriend, the woman ended up stabbing the boyfriend at least eight times, sending him to the hospital, police said.

Desrine Ann Marie Carridice, 31, was booked Wednesday morning, charged with attempted second-degree felony murder.

According to a West Palm Beach Police report, officers were called around 1:25 a.m. Wednesday to the Azalea Village apartment complex at 4200 Community Drive.

Hector Santiago, 35, had been stabbed in the back, chest, left arm and right hand.

He was taken by Trauma Hawk helicopter to St. Mary's Medical Center, the report said.

It did not give his condition.

Investigators learned the couple had gone Tuesday for a sonogram, and later that night, after they'd gone to bed, Santiago's former girlfriend called.

That prompted an argument that ended with Carridice stabbing Santiago, the report said.

As Santiago ran across the street to his sister's apartment for help; Carridice followed him, and after he said he would never see another woman, he turned to walk away and she stabbed him again, the report said.

This time, it was with a fork and a meat cleaver, Capt. Pat Maney said today.

At first, police said, Carridice said she'd been in bed and did not know what was going on. Later, she said Santiago beat her regularly and she had to protect herself.

She said Santiago pushed her down a stair and when he then placed her in a choke hold, she stabbed him.

She said she then ordered him out of the home. She denied stabbing him a second time.

Officers found a barbecue fork and meat cleaver hidden behind the water heater, the report said.

This morning, Circuit Judge Frank S. Castor ordered Carridice held without bail because the charge is punishable by life in prison and because the alleged attack would violate Carridice's probation on a Broward County case.

West Palm Beach police said that on April 15, Broward Circuit Judge Pedro E. Dijols placed Carridice on five years probation for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and battery.
