"Was it worth it?" asked Christopher Raines after SHOOTING his baby

A father is behind bars after police say he fatally shot his 9-month-old daughter in the head.

Police arrested 22-year-old Christopher Raines late Tuesday night. When asked by a reporter, "Was it worth it?" Raines shook his head no.

"Was it worth it?" is the phrase police said the man used when speaking to his baby's mother after he shot his infant in the head at a northwest Albuquerque home.

Officers said he got into an argument with the baby's mother, with whom he'd had a 2-year relationship. The pair had apparently been text messaging back and forth all day.

Raines told investigators the mother, 18-year-old Ashley Trujillo, had recently told him she no longer wanted a relationship with him. He said he believed she was seeing another man.

"He grabbed his daughter, his 9-month-old daughter, he armed himself with a .45-caliber gun. He put it to the baby's head and he fired a shot into that child's head," said Nadine Hamby, spokeswoman for the Albuquerque Police Department."This individual decided to take his own child's life just to spite the mother of his baby."

Trujillo told police it wasn't the first time Raines had pointed a gun at the infant. Police said there was no record of domestic violence between the couple.

Operator: “What's going on?”
Caller: “I just killed my daughter.”
Operator: “You what?”
Caller: “I just killed my daughter."

Rains told police he and the baby’s mother were having relationship problems and he was upset she was talking to another man. He told the 911 operator he held the gun to the back of the baby’s head and shot her point-blank.

Rains told the operator he couldn’t stand to see his ex-girlfriend move on.

Caller: “I just shot my baby. I just shot my baby.”
Operator: “Why did you shoot the baby?”
Caller: “Because I didn't want her to move on with another man without me, another man without me, I can't do that. And so I killed my daughter, and it's the biggest regret I've ever felt in my whole life.”

Rains told the 911 operator he wanted to kill himself because he didn’t want to go to prison. He remained at the house and was taken into custody when officers arrived.

Caller: “The police are here.”
Operator: “Okay. Just stay on the line with me, okay.”
Caller: “I'm going to go to prison forever, aren't I?”

Because he is accused of killing his own baby daughter, inmates see Rains as a target. That could explain what happened Wednesday at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

Jail officials say Rains is now on a suicide watch and will be separated form the rest of the jail population while behind bars.

Salazar, who was charged Tuesday after being caught with a shank inside the jail, now faces a new charge of assault.

OMFG! This makes me physically SICK! I literally almost puked when I read what this guy had done.

I wish Salazar would have put a shank in this sick POS's chest. Salazar should get all his charges dropped and be a free man since he obviously has some sense of true fairness, justice and humanity.

I can not fathom that the mom would let this guy stay around the baby considering he had pointed a gun at her before!

Funny how they always say they want to kill themselves but it's never them that ends up dead. He'll regret not killing himself much more than he will ever regret killing that innocent baby, once those other inmates get a hold of him.

This story is truly heartbreaking :( I don't even know what to say. I hope he doesn't make it out of prison alive, even if he does make it out I'm sure someone will kill him after he gets out. Max conviction time only 30 years on his charge? Is there no death penalty there?

I keep coming back to this thread to post a response, and words keep failing me. I hope this guy lives to be 110, and I hope nobody ever lets him forget that he is the reason his little girl will never take her first steps, speak her first words or beam a smile at him like he's the best, smartest, most perfect daddy ever. I don't want her to actually haunt him, because I think she's got better things to do with her time, but I want him to be miserable and locked up. I want him to have plenty of time to imagine what a treasure he stole from the world, and dream of amazing things she might have done. I want him to be stuck in that horrific moment while everyone else moves through the grieving process, and I want him to watch over and over again what he did, and consider why. It worked as intended- the mother is officially in a lot of pain. Now, though, there is no chance that she will ever look at him again with anything but hatred in her eyes. There won't be any reconciliation. Not to sound clinical about this, but the guy also broke the one tie that connected them, that could have kept her in his life.

My heart hurts for this baby's mom. How unreal. How nightmarish! And he was upset in the 911 call because he was going to get into trouble for it, that's the kicker.

i wish i hadn't read this; but i did, and now i can't get it out of my mind. what can you possibly say about someone like this? soulless, maybe? i don't know. i want to see him suffer for a long time before he dies; a long, long time. i would put him in a segregation unit, locked in for 23 hrs a day. let him out for 1 hour to exercise alone. no contact with anyone because he is unfit for human or animal companionship. no damn mail either. leave him there until he's old and sick, then execute him...inhumanely. that poor mother must live all her life with the horror and pain of her baby's murder; i want this festering skin suit to live with it too.

Investigators said Rains told them he'd been arguing with his ex for hours before the shooting repeatedly sending her text messages asking about the man she admitted seeing.

The arguing continued at his ex's home.

Rains told police he held his daughter in one hand and a gun in the other as his ex tried to get their baby away from him.

Rains said when his ex admitted to seeing the other man's genitals he shot the baby and then turned to his ex and asked her if it was "worth it."

I think that Ashley was trying to get away from him--obviously he is not a person who will be put off by a closed door if she DID attempt to keep him out and away from them.

When I read this on the front page last night, I was so affected. Like others have mentioned I keep coming back to try to comment--I feel full of something but nothing seems to appropriately voice whatever it is that I'm so sick with. We see some terrible stories here and while technically one can say that this baby did not suffer as much as many others we read about, this particular crime gives me and apparently many others an extremely visceral reaction. The sound of the mother in the background on that recording was heartbreaking.

I could go on about how I feel about this monster, but I don't feel like devoting any energy or thought toward him. For now I will grieve for this little baby I've never met, and her mother.

Like Jaded mentioned, I too can picture scenarios when I read this stuff. On this one, all I can do is stutter over the image of the time between the murder and the cops getting there, the image of Ashley as she was in the presence of her beautiful child, not only murdered in front of her, but in a way that destroyed her beauty and physical existence, probably obliterating her... As a mom, I can't even fathom the way this happened or the actions. I can't stand it.

Just listening to the 911 call I was filled with hate. He shows almost no emotion whatsoever except when he talks about going to prison.

I know she was in shock and I know she was dying inside too but My God I don't know how she didn't fucking kill him.

I am also pissed off they have separated him from the other inmates and are spending tax money to save him from himself and others. He just needs to fucking die.

Maybe we could put him and Grell in a cell together and tell them it's Gladiator time and whoever wins gets to be free just to shoot the motherfucker between the eyes when he thinks he is going to get his prize.

No real remorse or regard for what he did only for what is to come of him. I am really hoping death but not so fast, I want him to suffer and anguish over every waking moment. His MS says he most wants to meet GOD. He'll get God alright as he kicks his ass in to Hell then asks, "was it worth it"?

I'm rather stunned there isn't more screaming by the mother or the thrashing of his head as she beat the life out of him. It's hard to really put yourself entirely in her place, as to feel everything she must have been feeling and what she'd do. We can imagine but really, the horror of the moment....the fear and shock alone would be debilitating, numbing. Still, I'm rather sure I would have killed this evil bastard. Really, kill my baby?...HA! Hell would be jealous over my rage on him!

My brother shot himself in the head with a 45. We had to have a closed casket. I wish i hadn't read this, because from personal, deeply horrifying experice I know what she saw and what she is going through now. I hope she is sedated for a good long while.
