BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A 6-month-old baby died at the hands of her own caregiver.

Roman Rey Brand, 23, admitted during an exclusive jailhouse interview to hitting his girlfriend's baby, Ayonna Thompson, because she would not stop crying.

The incident happened Wednesday morning at a house on the 4700 block of Country Place Lane.

Brand said Wednesday night from jail that he had not had a good night's sleep and was trying to get some rest. The baby was fidgety and kept crying, so, out of frustration, he said he started hitting the baby on her head.


Brand said he and his girlfriend live in Ridgecrest and were visiting his mother in Bakersfield.

The infant was then taken to Mercy Southwest, where she died soon after. An autopsy determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma, and her death was ruled a homicide. Brand was arrested that afternoon.

He said he regrets what happened.

Kern County Superior Court records show a criminal history for Brand that includes misdemeanor convictions for drugs and spousal abuse.

Brand is currently being held on $1 million bail.

When are Moms going to learn, a boyfriend does not make a good babysitter to their children, especially if there is no DNA connection, in fact I am going to venture to say that most will harm your child in some way, more often than not!!

Not so much that he was a boyfriend, as we know most do not beat babies to death because of crying.....BUT, the fact he had a history with spousal abuse made him violent, and so not an option as a mate in my book.

I do agree and believe there is literature on that very subject DNA and baby killers, (you know what I mean), woman have got to take diligent measures into their hands to ensure safety for their child. Choosing more wisely who they fuck with and live with, and most important regardless of a DNA connection or not, knowing who the hell they leave their baby with. A simple background check would have told her nope, he's one I'm not gambling with. Sadly, as we know, bio dads do this kind of thing all the time, some seemingly caring dads before the assault. I guess you can never really know someone completely. Scary thought.

A 23-year-old Ridgecrest man who was arrested on charges of murdering a baby admitted hitting the 6-month-old infant in the head, according to an interview by KBAK-TV.

Roman Rey Brand said he had a hard time sleeping and he became annoyed by the crying of Ayonna Thompson early Wednesday morning, the television reported.

Brand said he hit the child on the left side of her head and then noticed later that she stopped breathing.

He tried to do CPR, but the baby didn't get better. An ambulance was called and the baby died at 5:51 a.m. at Mercy Southwest Hospital. The coroner said the baby died from blunt force trauma to her head.

Brand told the television interviewer that he regretted the incident. He said the baby's mother was hysterical when she found out.
