A Union man has been charged with homicide by neglect following the death of his 67-year-old mother, who arrived at a hospital last month covered in maggot-filled sores.
According to the Union County Sheriff's Office, the home that
Bryan Scott Williams shared with his mother was covered with
piles of trash, as well as human and animal feces.
Williams, 46, took his mother, Carol Ruth Williams, to Wallace Thomson Hospital on Wednesday after he found her unresponsive on a living room sofa. Hospital staff, deputies and a Department of Social Services worker noticed
redness, swelling and open wounds on the elderly woman's body and, while photographing her condition,
found maggots in and around some of her injuries.
Deputies later searched the Williams' mobile home and discovered
soiled adult diapers, an "enormous amount of trash piled in the living room," and
a bedroom floor covered in dog feces, according to an incident report.
After taking his mother to the hospital, Bryan Williams told deputies she
hadn't been able to get off the sofa on her own for about a month, and he had been purchasing adult diapers for her. She had been capable of cleaning herself, he told them.
The same day her condition was brought to the attention of authorities, Carol Williams was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where she died

Union County Sheriff David Taylor said Carol Williams would not have died if she had been cared for properly at home.
"This is a tragic situation. It started as a case of neglect of a vulnerable adult and ended up costing her life," Taylor said.
