Brave canine cop Diablo shot in the line of duty by Eric Weit

Officers were called to the Chateau Orleans Apartment complex on Philadelphia Pike at about 12:40 a.m. after reports of a domestic dispute.

A female told police her ex-boyfriend, 34-year-old Eric Weit, was near hear apartment after allegedly threatening to kill her.

Police sent a rookie K9 unit into a nearby wooded area after hearing a single gunshot. As officers were ending their search, the police dog named "Diablo" tracked down and engaged the suspect.

A bark from Diablo sent officers into cover as Weit opened fire. Despite two gunshot wounds, police said Diablo held tight to the suspect until getting the command to release.

Officers returned fire on the suspect, striking him multiple times in the torso. He was flown to Christiana Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery and is currently in stable condition.

Diablo's partner rushed him to the Matthew Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he is currently in surgery.

Diablo is a Belgian Malinois. If he needs to retire he can come live at my house.

I always worry that the dogs can be shot at as well as the cops.
Poor dog. I hope he recovers.

Diablo's partner rushed him to the Matthew Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where doctors performed surgery on a shattered hind leg. He is currently under observation in intensive care.

One of the PD's in my area responded to a robbery 2 years ago and the K9 was shot and killed. The community was moved by the incident and I hope that the dog pulls thru.

It never ceases to amaze me how wonderful dogs are.

I will say a prayer for this brave officer who happens to wear a fur coat.

Way to Go Furry One !

How many human cops would have held him down after being shot? This police dog did his job and did it well. I hope he lives a long , happy , cushy life from now on.

My question is why would they name a canine cop Diablo?

Doesn't it mean the devil? Strange choice of a name IMO

Probably because any suspect that dog took off after would think it was the devil himself chasing them.

The female rottie I used to have sounded like a hoard of demons when she would growl at something.

A Delaware police dog, wounded in the line of duty and hailed as a hero earlier this month, has recovered from pneumonia, is up and walking and eating solid food, his veterinarian said this morning.
A bullet ripped through Diablo's left shoulder. Another shattered the dog's left leg. Still, Diablo hung on to the man and released him only when his handler called out.
Diablo remains in intensive care, said surgeon Dr. Elaine Holmes, but is making a strong recovery.

"This is an extraodinary dog," Holmes said.
