State and Sanford Police are issuing an Amber Alert for a missing two year old girl who was taken by her father this morning in Sanford after what investigators call a violent assault of the girl's mother. Authorities are looking for Gary Traynham, 38, and his two year old daughter Hailey. Authorities say the two may be in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire this afternoon. Traynham is driving a 1998 green Dodge 1500 pickup truck with Maine registration 8629 NB. He is described as 5'11", 230 pounds with balding brown hair, hazel eyes and a dark goatee. The girl has shoulder length blond hair, blue eyes and weighs between 35 and 50 pounds. Anyone who has seen Traynham or has information on his whereabouts should call Sanford Police at 207-324-3644 or dial 911 on a cell phone.

Police believe Traynham and the girl may be in eastern New Hampshire. According to the Amber Alert broadcast in New Hampshire, Trayham was seen in Alton around 5 p.m.

It was a chance encounter, but it was one that led to the return to safety of a 2-year-old Sanford, Maine, child.

It was Mike Grant Jr. of Milton who came upon Hailey and her abductor Tuesday afternoon in the wooded area of the town. Grant was headed down a dirt road to one of his usual hunting locations when he came upon the green Dodge pickup truck he had heard so much about from the time he first became aware of Hailey’s abduction. “I knew what it was when I saw her (Hailey) standing up in her seat,” Grant said.

Traynham was ready to give himself up. The Milton man convinced Traynham to leave the pickup truck and drove him and Hailey to the nearby home of retired Milton Police Chief Timothy Merrill. He did so after talking Traynham out of hiding.
Grant said, “I told him to be a man about it,” adding, “I can’t let you leave.” At one point Traynham was in tears.

While it is likely Mike Grant would deny being a hero during those minutes in the woods and in the drive to the calming environment of Chief Merrill’s home — an environment in which Hailey had a chance to play with the retired chief’s young grandsons — he was indeed a hero.

Domestic disputes can be among the most difficult challenges law enforcement authorities face. They are fraught with emotion — frequently, the emotions of anger, fear and confusion. The danger is frequently great and the conclusion is sometimes tragic.

Yes. Mike Grant Jr. is a hero and Hailey Traynham is safe because of it.

He's going to pay for bad judgement. Maybe he didn't like the custody situation and felt that he had no other choice, but it was a stupid thing to do, beating up the mom and taking off with the baby.

I hope he's learned something from this. I really do. I'm glad the baby was found safe. We hear so many stories that don't end well.
