OREM — A 3-year-old boy was hit by a vehicle just before he went trick-or-treating Saturday is still in serious condition but police said he "should be fine."
The Provo child was about to go trick-or-treating with his family on Halloween when he stepped over the line along the side of the road next to his parents' vehicle near 1340 North and 1200 West and was clipped by a sport utility vehicle, said Sgt. Craig Martinez of Orem Police.
The boy fell down, hit his head and was transported by ambulance to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in critical condition. He was later flown by helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center, police said.
"I talked to his mother," Martinez said. "He has a fracture to the face and a broken leg, but it looks like he'll be okay."
Police are still looking for the vehicle, described as a dark-colored sport utility vehicle, that witnesses said pulled off to the side of the road half a block away after hitting the boy, and then drove off.
Police say the vehicle should have damage to the right front corner and are asking anyone with information to call Orem Police at 801-229-7070.
