A newborn boy was found dead under macabre circumstances at the bottom of the ventilation shaft of a multi-storey building on Jamal Abdul Naser Road here on Sunday morning, police sources said.
The matter is under investigation and the cause is yet to be determined. But prima facie evidence points to a deliberate act, not accident, according to the police.
“We have arrested a man and a woman we suspect are involved with the killing of the baby,” an official from Sharjah Police said on condition of anonymity. “However, investigations are still ongoing.”
Police suspect the act, yet to be founded, was a desperate bid to keep a marriage secret. “We have learned the lady suspect was married to this man and decided to kill her own baby as she did not want anyone to know about her marriage.”
The newborn, whose body was covered with blood, is presumed to have fallen from one of the upper flats in the Burj Al Arab building. It was found by the building watchman, who immediately contacted the police.
“I went to the ventilation area to check if someone was dumping trash and found a baby there lying in a pool of blood,” he said. “I was shocked and scared.”
Sharjah Police rushed to the building and found the infant at the site as reported. To all appearances, he was no more than a few days old and had died as a result of a fall, deliberate or otherwise, sources said.
Abu Baker, the watchman of the building who was the first to see the body, said his was a routine shift until the macabre discovery.
Mohamed Khamis, one of the builing’s owners, said he knew of at least one resident of the building who was pregnant.
Radha, a resident in the building, was unaware of the incident until she saw the police arrive. “All of a sudden there were flashing lights everywhere,” she said. “It’s shocking that anyone should do this.”
