baby found dead after falling down a rubbish chute

The parents of a new-born Egyptian baby who was found dead after falling down a rubbish chute have been arrested, police confirmed yesterday.

The three-day-old baby was found dead near the bottom of a chute at the Burj al Arab building on Jamal Abdul Nasser road in Sharjah.

The baby’s parents lived on the sixth floor of the building. It was not known whether the child was alive before it fell down the chute.

Abubaker Mohammed, 34, the Bangladeshi caretaker of the building, said he was outside collecting rubbish and cleaning the area when the baby suddenly fell out of the chute. “The baby did not have any clothes on it,” he said. “It was as if it had just been born.”

The watchman called one of the owners of the building, Mohammed Khamis, who called police. They arrested the Egyptian mother and called her husband, who was at work, to order him to report to Buhairah police station.

A neighbour of the couple, a Palestinian mother of two, Asma bint Ahmad, described the couple as a young and loving family. The baby was their first child, she said.

“I saw her all the time when she was pregnant,” said Mrs Ahmad. “One time I found her on the stairs and helped her to come up.”

She said that on Thursday night the husband was seen with two other relatives carrying the woman to the hospital. She did not see her neighbour again until the arrest. Mrs Ahmad said the family had lived in the flat for about a year. At first, they shared it with another family, who moved out around three months ago.

A police source added that a post-mortem examination was due to be performed.

I wish they'd indicated if it was a baby boy or girl. I want to say girl, but I'm just jaded like that. How very odd and so tragic. Neighbor said, "as a young and loving family. The baby was their first child they seemed like a loving couple, first baby".....What the hell happened?

So sorry wee one, now with the angels.....

You took the words right out of my mouth - I wondered what the babies sex was and the first thing I thought was a "girl" because it's all to well known that in some places girls are not "valued" - they want boys. Not saying that this is the case here as not enough has been posted, I am curious tho. Poor baby either way - boy or girl - to be so disregarded to have been thrown down a garbage shute.

This trash needs to realize a baby is a precious gift whether boy or girl. If they didn't want the baby then give it up for adoption, but damn you don't toss baby down the damn garbage chute.

    RIP Little angel!

I agree, I just want to know baby girl or boy. Baby was 3 days old so I"m assuming a name was given tho. I would say the given name is null and void as the mother/parents disposed of baby in such a disrespectful way even if it was natural causes.

Article indicated both parents were arrested, but the father was at work when baby was discovered. So, I'm thinking something happened prior when he was home. Baby wasn't even clothed.....wtf? I want to know what happened.....just breaks my heart.

    he was a baby boy.

Residents have spoken of their horror after a baby boy was found dead at the bottom of the ventilation shaft of their tower block.

A man and woman are believed to have been arrested in connection with the child’s death as police investigate whether he fell or was thrown from one of the flats.

Many residents said they were shocked at the thought that the baby could have been killed intentionally. “It’s really cruel. Whoever is responsible should be punished. It’s inhuman,” said one Indian woman.

She added that people had hardly talked about anything else since it happened.

7DAYS was unable to speak to anyone involved in the case at Sharjah Police, but residents said they had been told the arrested couple were being interviewed and that DNA tests were being carried out to identify the child.

A watchman at the building, Mohammed Abu Bakr, said he had discovered the body.

“It was gory. The child was lying in a pool of blood face down. I immediately ran out of the building to inform the owner, who called the police,” he said.
He added that police and CID officers came to the building, the Burj Al Arab off Jamal Abdul Nasser Street, and questioned him and a number of residents about the child’s death.

“I am yet to sleep peacefully since the incident. The images of the dead boy keep lingering in my mind whenever I close my eyes. I don’t think I will ever forget it,” he said.

He added: “Police came to the building at night and took the couple into custody. Nobody knows much about them as they were new.”

A newborn boy was found dead under macabre circumstances at the bottom of the ventilation shaft of a multi-storey building on Jamal Abdul Naser Road here on Sunday morning, police sources said.

The matter is under investigation and the cause is yet to be determined. But prima facie evidence points to a deliberate act, not accident, according to the police.

“We have arrested a man and a woman we suspect are involved with the killing of the baby,” an official from Sharjah Police said on condition of anonymity. “However, investigations are still ongoing.”

Police suspect the act, yet to be founded, was a desperate bid to keep a marriage secret. “We have learned the lady suspect was married to this man and decided to kill her own baby as she did not want anyone to know about her marriage.”

The newborn, whose body was covered with blood, is presumed to have fallen from one of the upper flats in the Burj Al Arab building. It was found by the building watchman, who immediately contacted the police.

“I went to the ventilation area to check if someone was dumping trash and found a baby there lying in a pool of blood,” he said. “I was shocked and scared.”

Sharjah Police rushed to the building and found the infant at the site as reported. To all appearances, he was no more than a few days old and had died as a result of a fall, deliberate or otherwise, sources said.

Abu Baker, the watchman of the building who was the first to see the body, said his was a routine shift until the macabre discovery.

Mohamed Khamis, one of the builing’s owners, said he knew of at least one resident of the building who was pregnant.

Radha, a resident in the building, was unaware of the incident until she saw the police arrive. “All of a sudden there were flashing lights everywhere,” she said. “It’s shocking that anyone should do this.”
