Shela Heights burned her 14-month old baby with a clothes iron

A Killeen woman is in jail after police say she burned a child with an iron, leaving a permanent mark.

Doctors called Killeen Police to Metroplex Hospital after noticing suspicious injuries on a 14-month-old girl. Doctors say the mother's story just did not add up and had changed several times. Doctors say the child had burns in the shape of a clothes iron on her chest and abdomen.

According to the arrest affidavit, Killeen Police spoke with Shela Fae Heights, the girl's mother, who told them the baby fell on to the iron. Doctors examined the girl and photos of the iron and concluded the iron had been pressed onto the child.

Police say the child's burns were inconsistent with Heights' story.

Following their investigation, police arrested Heights. She faces a felony charge of reckless injury to a child causing serious bodily injury. Her bond has been set at $100,000.

The alleged incident happened on September 27.

A burn to anywhere on your body is super painful. Makes me cringe and I burn myself on my iron regularly because I do not pay good attention when I iron my work clothes.

How in world can you place a hot iron on your own child and listen to them scream in agony? Seriously, I am sure most of us here have accidently burned our selves on an iron and IT HURTS! I heard about this one, on the local news. Baby goes a whole month before getting medical attention, amazing she didn't develop a severe infection, or maybe that's why she finally took her. What a loser. So cruel. I'm sure that baby was in a lot of distress, no decent mother would neglect a child so, allowing her to suffer.
