The 2-year-old boy whose skull was allegedly fractured by his mother’s boyfriend in a fit of rage last week is recovering in a New Orleans hospital, relatives said.
“He’s recovering day by day,” said his mother, 23-year-old Kimberly Trahan. Her son Kooper recognizes relatives and smiles, but he occasionally winces in pain.
“I want to take his pain away, but I can’t,” she said.
Trahan’s boyfriend, 21-year-old Patrick A. Naquin of Houma, remained in the Terrebonne Parish jail this morning in lieu of a $150,000 bond. He is charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile. If convicted, he faces up to 40 years in prison.
The boy’s biological father, Mitchell Saam Jr., is serving time in prison for a robbery conviction.

Trahan, who lived in Gray with her parents, said she was in the process of moving-in with Naquin, whom she first met when they worked at a local pizza restaurant together.
She called Naquin a “monster,” adding that though the couple had argued in the past, nothing would have led her to believe he was capable of hurting her child as alleged.
“My kids are the highlights of my life. They are the reason you wake up and go on day by day,” she said. “This has shook my world upside down. I would probably never trust somebody again as far I can throw them.”
Naquin’s arrest record shows a variety of misdemeanor traffic arrests and a misdemeanor possession of marijuana conviction. In February 2008 he was charged with robbery but the case was dropped, according to court records, because the alleged victim was in the Army at the time and could not testify.
