NEWPORT NEWS, VA. -- "I saw colonies of bugs. They were crawling on the wall and along the bathroom sink that was covered in mold."
That's what Newport News Officer Brandon Maynard found when he went into the apartment of Ydesha Lopez who lives in the apartment with her three children, two nieces and a nephew.
Maynard was responding to two complaints of unattended children Friday when he was at the Woodbridge Point Apartments on an unrelated matter.
When he entered the apartment he found, "Unlivable conditions...as soon as you open the door. The feces smell hits you in the face. Clothes everywhere, bugs everywhere, trash and food scattered on the ground, dried grease on the stove, sink filled with water, mold."
This wasn't the first complaint on Lopes, Christian Cruz is a courtesy officer at the apartment complex and says, "She's had several citations from us to clean up the back porch. A lot of clothes out here. We told her 'the porch isn't your closet.'"
Maynard arrested Lopez Friday after she claimed she was working too hard to clean up her apartment.
