distraught parents, along with her 22-year-old brother Alex held an emotional news conference just hours ago. They chose to speak out from a very specific location. Listen.

DR. DAN HARRINGTON, MORGAN`S FATHER: We wanted to come here today, because this is the last place that Morgan was seen before someone took her and murdered her.

My understanding is that this is not a random place that someone came upon accidentally. This is known to someone here. It`s a local person, and as I`ve said all along, Morgan would be found within five miles of this bridge, and it`s probably a local person. And I`m sure I`m 100 percent right.

GIL HARRINGTON, MORGAN`S MOTHER: For the first time in 101 days, I am not thinking every minute, what is he doing to my daughter now? What is he doing to her? What is she having to endure?
Meantime, her father has said the medical examiner will release his daughter`s body in about five or six days. Imagine their grief. Imagine their rage.
Henry, what is the very latest?

HENRY GRAFF, REPORTER, WVIR: Well, what we can tell you right now is they did identify the remains of Morgan Harrington today just before noon. Also, what we are learning today, police back out on the scene, combing some 700 acres of farmland for potential clues in this case right now.

Also today again, the Harringtons speaking out, a very emotional news conference at the last spot that their daughter was seen alive. So a lot of stuff happening today.
Well, investigators told me earlier today, Jane, I spoke with Virginia State Police. And they said that the purse that was left in the parking lot did not appear like it was dumped. It appeared to be dropped off. Like Morgan had dropped it on the ground and didn`t realize it, that she had left it there.

They also say that that night she did, in fact, consume alcohol, and had fallen multiple times. This is according to eyewitness accounts that they gave to police. And that she did have a scrape on her chin, not consistent with an assault, but is consistent with the fact that she may have just tripped and fell.

everything reported said she was looking forward to this conference. If she ends up outside, why would she, after looking forward to it for so many months, walk away from it and say, "I`ll find my way home? Why don`t you just get me my ticket stub, bring it down here and get me in there?"

It`s almost like she had maybe set up a time to meet somebody outside that stadium, and that possibly went wrong. So many different ways, but I agree with your callers. Something is wrong with that scenario. How do you end up out in the bathroom outside, and then not want to get back in when you`re looking forward to that for months?
what about this 3:45 a.m. sighting? Some newspaper delivery woman insists that she saw Morgan the next morning, in the morning.

SIGONA: And that`s just one of 600 leads that have come in, Jane, that investigators have worked out. What they do know for sure, based on those witness accounts, is that Morgan was last seen -- the last known sighting was on that Copeley Road Bridge.

And also, when Morgan called her friends back inside, she was very calm. She was very casual. She just said, "Hey, look, I`m cool. I`m going to find a ride home."

    So wait.
She was intoxicated to the point of falling down a bunch and even scraping her chin with a fall, yet

She was very casual. She just said, "Hey, look, I`m cool. I`m going to find a ride home."

At the presser on the bridge today (haven't been through all the transcripts), I believe one of the reports asked (the father) about identifying the remains. He explained they weren't allowed on the property since it was a crime scene so the had to fly by on a helicopter and were sure it was their daughter (later confirmed with dental records).

That just made me so sad. I could barely hear her mom talking, but she said something like even her bones were beautiful (sort of mumbling). The look on the reporter's face was just, well, shock, at that statement.

Remember, I haven't read the exact transcripts. This as a presser around 1pm today, I think, plus I was on the telephone with the insurance company.

    Police ask residents for information in Virginia Tech student's deathFebruary 4, 2010 6:10 p.m. EST(CNN) --
The person responsible for a Virginia Tech student's death was familiar with the area where her body was recovered, police said Thursday.

The farmland site where Morgan Harrington's remains were found is the "most significant" aspect of the investigation into her death, Virginia State Police Lt. Joe Rader said.

He asked that members of the surrounding community call police with any details of the area and who has frequented it.

"People in North Garden, people in the Anchorage Farm area, you know what goes on there," Rader said, referring to areas of Virginia's Albemarle County. "You know the history. You know who comes in and out of that vicinity. You may not realize it, but you probably have some information for us that you don't think is important."

Morgan Harrington disappeared October 17, after attending a Metallica concert at the University of Virginia's John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia. The 20-year-old education major was separated from her friends at the concert.

A farmer discovered her skeletal remains on his 700-acre farm January 26, police said. The farm is about 10 miles from the concert site.

There have been no arrests in the case, police said. The cause of her death is still under investigation.

Investigators think that the farm "did not present an unnecessary risk for the person responsible" and that the person passed through or visited the farm or the nearby area, Rader said.

Traveling to the area where the remains were found "would have created a significant risk for any person not familiar to that area and not comfortable with that type of setting," Rader said.

"Farmland like the place where Morgan's body was located has obstacles, difficult obstacles. It has streams, it has fences, it has defects, it has terrain that changes. That's important, that's a high-risk opportunity to pick that location to take Morgan Harrington unless you're familiar with the area," he said.

"We don't believe those are challenges that someone unfamiliar with the area would confront."

The farmer who found Harrington's remains came across them in a remote section of a hayfield, police said last month. The farm's owner, David Dass, told CNN affiliate WTVR that he was out looking for damage after wind and rain knocked down several trees in his yard when he found "what looked like a human skull." He told WTVR that the area is at least a mile and a half from a main roadway.

Read more about the case from WTVR

"There is no public access to this particular area. The hayfield was last cut in August 2009 and would have been possibly waist-high by mid-October 2009," a January police statement said.

On the October night Harrington went missing, she had left her friends to use the restroom during the concert, police said. When she did not return, her friends called her cell phone at 8:48 p.m. She told them she was outside the arena and could not get back in because of its policy, police said, but she told them not to worry about her and she would find a ride home.

There are restrooms inside the arena, police said, and authorities do not know how or why Harrington got outside. Witnesses who saw her outside the arena said she did not appear to be with anyone, police said.

About 9:30 p.m., witnesses reported seeing a person matching Harrington's description walking on a nearby bridge, police said. No further sightings were reported.

Harrington's purse, with her identification and cell phone inside, was found the following day in an overflow parking lot near the arena, police said. A friend had driven Harrington's car to the concert, she said, and still had the car keys when they became separated.

Police are asking anyone with information on the case to call 434-709-1685.

The family will hold a Mass for Harrington on Friday in Roanoke, Virginia.

"We are grief stricken by her death but also lifted by the knowledge that Morgan Dana Harrington was precious to so many and will not be forgotten," her family wrote Monday on their Web site dedicated to Harrington. "She mattered, to us all."

Investigation progresses into death of Morgan Harrington
In the six months since the disappearance and death of Morgan D. Harrington, Virginia State Police with the assistance of local investigators have pursued close to a thousand leads and interviewed more than 100 individuals as part of the on-going investigation.
In addition, forensic testing has recently confirmed an article of clothing as belonging to the 20-year-old Roanoke woman.

Harrington disappeared the night of Oct. 17, 2009, during a Metallica concert at the John Paul Jones Arena on the University of Virginia (UVA) grounds in Charlottesville, Va. During the course of the investigation, police have been able to establish a timeline of Miss Harrington’s movements once she ended up outside of the arena at approximately 8:30 p.m. After talking to her friends on her cell phone, she then walked through the parking lot of University Hall and was also seen in the Lannigan Athletic Field parking lot, which is also used for RV parking. At around 9:30 p.m., she was last seen walking on the Copeley Road bridge near Ivy Road, hitchhiking for a ride.
    [...]
Recently completed testing by the Virginia Department of Forensic Science confirmed that a black T-shirt discovered Nov. 11, 2009, in the city of Charlottesville is the one Harrington was last seen wearing the night of the concert. The T-shirt, with the word “Pantera” spelled out in tan letters across the front, was discovered by a Charlottesville resident on Nov. 11, 2009, and turned over to investigators. The T-shirt was found on 15th Street near the intersection of Grady Avenue.
In addition, the team of investigators from the University of Virginia Police, Albemarle County Police, Charlottesville Police, Virginia State Police and the FBI assigned to the case has made substantial progress in evaluating countless possibilities and scenarios related to the circumstances surrounding Harrington’s disappearance and death.

“We are still encouraging the public to come forward with relevant information concerning Morgan Harrington,” said Lt. Joe Rader, Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Appomattox Field Office. “As this investigation continues to progress, factual details are more helpful and important to investigators than theoretical abstracts. It’s going to take that one courageous phone call to Crime Stoppers from someone who knows something firsthand about this case that will be the key to linking together the evidence and data collected to date.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Jefferson Area Crime Stoppers at (434) 977-4000. A reward of $150,041 is still available for anyone with information that leads to a resolution of this crime. Calls can also be made to local police or the Virginia State Police Tip Line at (434) 352-3467 or emailed to the State Police at bci-appomattox@vsp.virginia.gov. Anonymous tips are welcome.

Virginia State Police released this composite sketch today
of a suspected attacker in the Morgan Harrington case
and an assault in Fairfax County.
The attacker in an abduction police have tied to the death of Morgan D. Harrington assaulted his victim physically as well as sexually, police said this afternoon.

In that case, the attacker carried his victim to a park in a residential neighborhood to assault her, Fairfax police said.

The victim, a 26-year-old woman, was walking through a residential neighborhood on her way home from a grocery store when she was attacked, said Sgt. Pam Nevlud of the City of Fairfax Police Department.

“An unidentified man grabbed her from behind,” Nevlud said. “He picked her up and carried her to a park that’s just adjacent to [the street], and that’s where she was physically and sexually assaulted.”

Nevlud declined to comment on the nature of the physical assault.

The state police announced today that forensic evidence found in the Harrington case matches evidence from the 2005 assault.

Composite sketch generates more than 50 tips in 24 hours
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - This will be a working holiday weekend for state police investigators after a sketch sparks a flood of new tips in the Morgan Harrington case.

That composite sketch was released just 24 hours ago, but it's already generated more than 50 tips. Investigators are combing through dozens of new leads in the abduction and murder of Harrington.

NBC12 broke the news to Morgan's mother Friday night about the number of tips sparked by this sketch alone. Police say leads are still coming in. This was Gil Harrington's first reaction to the new tips in her daughter's brutal death last fall.

"I'm glad to hear it's shaking something loose out of the tree. That's great," said Gil Harrington.

Calls and emails have poured in from Fairfax to Charlottesville and well beyond Virginia's borders ever since the sketch made headlines again and went national.

"It pretty much runs the gamut people who think they may know, the person people who are adamant they know this person, which is great," said Virginia State Police spokeswoman, Corrine Geller.

State police released the drawing Thursday after revealing the man, wanted for a Fairfax City abduction and sexual assault, is linked through forensic evidence to Harrington's abduction and murder. Investigators spent Friday vetting and prioritizing the leads.

"Hopefully, in the end, that tip is among those fifty we've received so far, or continue to receive over the holiday weekend, we will bring not only the Morgan Harrington case to a resolution but also the 2005 abduction and assault," said Geller.

Harrington says she's now wondering how many more women have fallen victim to this mystery man.

"Perhaps this amount of media attention will give someone who might be sitting on the sidelines the courage to come forward. I'd be surprised if that weren't the case," said Harrington.

Supporters remember slain Va Tech student
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Supporters of Morgan Harrington are gathering to observe what would have been the slain Virginia Tech student's 21st birthday.
    [...]
Morgan Harrington's remains were found on an Albemarle County farm Jan. 26, more than three months after the 20-year-old disappeared from a rock concert at the University of Virginia. The cause of death hasn't been released.

Virginia State Police say forensic evidence has connected the slaying to a 2005 unsolved abduction and sexual assault in northern Virginia.

    Harringtons Still Looking for Answers
As Morgan Harrington's parents prepare for a memorial to honor their daughter they continue to put pressure on police to find her killer.
Dan Harrington said, "There are people that we will go to - politicians, governor, senators - that we are going to find an answer here and we are not going to go away".
20-year-old Morgan Harrington disappeared from outside a concert at John Paul Jones Arena one year ago. There are still no arrests in this case.
It's a point o frustration for her parents, Dan and Gil Harrington, as they prepare to honor their daughter with a permanent memorial on grounds. The Harringtons sat down with us this afternoon.
They say they are frustrated because police have no one in custody, but also because they don't always feel included in the investigation.
Morgan was last seen alive on the Copeley Bridge after leaving the Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena on October 17 2009. Three months later, on January 26, a farmer discovered her body on Anchorage Farm in Albemarle County.
This summer investigators identified a DNA connection between Morgan's murder and a 2005 sexual assault in Fairfax County. They even released a composite sketch. But the Harringtons say the investigation is moving too slowly for them.
Gil Harrington said, "The stance that perhaps is being taken to find answers is to sit back and wait for a DNA hit from another crime to find the man, and I'm not satisfied to do that."
The Harringtons also say they feel the police have been resistant to including them in the investigation, although recently they say that's been getting better thanks to weekly meetings with investigators. They say they are most concerned about this turning into a cold case.

I hope at the very least the arena has changed its policy regarding not letting someone back in once they have left. I mean...surely she had a ticket stub....that is just awful. Cannot imagine the guy who had to inforce that rule upon her.....and then she turns up dead. UGH.
They really need to change that.

I went to an Elton John concert up in Columbus back in like 98and had stepped out to smoke one. I didn't have my ticket stub and the guy at the gates was like "it's policy", but he let me back in. Surly it had to have been the stub I had to have, as I can swear my mom was out there with me too, for a brief time.

DNA links Morgan Harrington's killer with a Fairfax County abduction-rape case
The disappearance and death of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington last year made local and national headlines.
    And the case remains unsolved.
But there is a crucial DNA link with another case in Fairfax County.
Her family and friends have organized a caravan to raise awareness of the link
They have traveled from Roanoke to Fairfax, with signs on their cars, passing out leaflets with a composite sketch of a man who abducted and raped a 25-year old Fairfax County woman in 2005.

"We want justice for our daughter, but we want the community to be safe," said Dan Harrington, Morgan's father.
Morgan Harrington was abducted and killed after leaving a Metallica concert in Charlottesville in October 2009.
Her parents hope to keep the unsolved case alive in the public eye.
"It's too late for us," said Gil Harrington, Morgan's mother. "Our daughter is dead. But it's not too late for the next girl, and that's why I can't give up."
"The DNA collected from that young lady is connected forensically to Morgan's murder," said Amanda St. Clair, a volunteer in the caravan. "There's no question about it."Police warn the suspect may have changed his appearance in five years. But the hope is someone might recognize him from the sketch on the poster.
The family and police still have many questions. Why was Morgan's body moved to a remote farm? Is her killer now in Fairfax County?
Police have posted a $150,000 reward for information in this case.

    Morgan's last steps retraced.

For the first time, Morgan Harrington's parents walked the hayfield Tuesday where a farmer discovered her skeletal remains one year ago today.

When they reached that secluded site on the 740-acre farm in Albemarle County, Gil Harrington buried her face in her husband's chest and wept.

Moments later, with Dan Harrington at her shoulder, she knelt at the spot that once cradled her daughter's bones and ran her hands through the dark soil and wheat-colored grass.

"I don't feel Morgan here," Gil Harrington said. "She's gone. I had to be here and look and feel if there was anything [of Morgan] here."

    She added, "Evil happened here."
    [...]

Cappuzzo and the Harringtons, who are residents of Roanoke County, led a small group of TV and newspaper reporters Tuesday on a walking tour of the key known events of Oct. 17, 2009.

When Gil Harrington's weeping began at the farm, all cameras swiveled in her direction. The Harringtons said Tuesday's media tour was emotionally grueling. But they emphasized that, if renewed coverage of the case leads to capturing the killer, the raw grief provoked will justify the pain.

Gil Harrington said she believes more than one person might have participated in the killing. Cappuzzo declined to say whether investigators share this view. His narrative throughout the day generally referenced a single killer who was male.
    [...]

Cappuzzo said behavioral and geographical crime scene specialists have convinced authorities that Morgan's killer was familiar with the territory where her remains were found in a small clearing near a tree-lined creek.
    [...]

Cappuzzo said investigators believe the man who abducted and killed Morgan is still "moving about" in the nearby Red Hill and North Garden sections of Albemarle County.

"I feel very confident this case will solve," he said.

He would not say whether police have a specific suspect in mind. But he added, "That person doesn't know it yet, but we're getting closer."
    [...]

Cappuzzo said behavioral specialists recommended Tuesday's recap of Morgan's disappearance and death. Gil Harrington described the couple's feelings about finding those responsible.

"For Dan, it's personal," she said. "As a father and with a father's protective instincts, he wants punishment.

"For me, I feel punishment will be delivered, if not here then later. But I don't want anyone else to live through this. My child is dead, and nothing will bring her back. But I can't give up on the next girl."

That update with it's description is powerful and it gives me the feeling this case will be solved, probably sooner than most. I really hope they catch the person/s responsible. And I think they will.

I live in Fairfax County, but I've never seen anyone who looks like that. Wish I had so I could call the tipline...

New FBI sketch of man linked to Morgan Harrington's murder

A new sketch has been released by the FBI of the man believed to be connected to the disappearance and murder of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington.
A new sketch has been released by the FBI of the man believed to be connected to the disappearance and murder of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington. The 20-year old was last seen at a concert in Charlottesville in October 2009. Her body was found in January 2010 on a farm in Albemarle County.

A new alert posted on the “Help Save the Next Girl” Facebook page shows a revised sketch of the man forensically linked to both Harrington and a sexual assault in Fairfax County back in 2005.

Gil Harrington, Morgan’s mother, tells WSLS the new sketch is much more realistic and hopes it will jog someone’s memory.

Metallica is helping law enforcement authorities try to find the killer of a Virginia Tech student who disappeared from an October 2009 concert by the heavy metal band in Charlottesville, Va.

As part of an FBI multimedia campaign announced Wednesday, Metallica lead singer James Hetfield appears in an online video appealing to the public for tips in the death of Morgan Harrington.
    [...]

“Bringing renewed attention to the case will get people thinking about it again,” Virginia State Police Special Agent Dino Cappuzzo said in a statement. “Our hope is that someone will come forward and provide a crucial piece of information that will help us solve the murder.”

The multimedia campaign launched Wednesday includes information on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook, a YouTube public service announcement by Metallica and electronic billboards in Virginia and along the East Coast.

"If you’ve seen the person in this sketch or have any information about this case, or any others, please contact your local police or submit your information online,” Hetfield says in the online video. “Remember, any information, no matter how small you might think it is, could be that crucial piece that investigators need to help solve the case.”

Law enforcement agencies are asking anyone with information to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or the Virginia State Police Tip line at 434-352-3467.
