Two children have been found murdered at their home in Manchester and their father has been arrested, police said today. Theo Molemohi, two, and his sister Yolande, four, were found unconscious at a flat in Whalley Range, two miles south of the city centre, just after 8am today

A 37-year-old man, believed to be the children's father, who was in the flat with them, was arrested on suspicion of murder. He later collapsed while in police custody and was taken to hospital.

Attempts were made at the scene to resuscitate the children, but they were already dead. Postmortem examinations are being carried out. Reports suggest the children were strangled.

Detective Superintendent Geoff Wessell, of Greater Manchester police, said the children's parents were estranged. The children spent the weekend with their father and were due to be picked up by their mother today.

He said: "They were found in a bedroom with the father there next to them. He lived at the address. His ex-partner recently moved out and had agreed to let the father look after the children for the weekend. She had gone back for clothes and let herself in and was confronted by this traumatic scene. This was a traumatic incident for the family and the officers that attended."

Yolanda Molemohi, four, and her two-year-old brother Theo were found unconscious in their bedroom by their horrified mother.

It is understood they were found with narrow cord wrapped around their necks with their father beside them.

Although their mother, Morongoe Molemohi, 30, tried desperately to revive the youngsters, they were pronounced dead in hospital.

It has been revealed that Mrs Molemohi and her Zimbabwean-born husband, Petros Williams, 37, had recently separated and that the children had been spending the past few days with their father.

Detectives are examining the possibility that Williams, a finance director, murdered his children in revenge for his churchgoing wife walking out on him.

It is understood that Williams, who was rambling and incoherent, collapsed at a police station and was taken to hospital. He is due to be questioned over the double killing.

A jealous husband strangled his two young children with internet cables after he discovered his wife had been using online dating websites, a court heard.

Petros Williams, 37, was angry and bitter when his wife Morengoe Molemohi left him after the breakdown of their relationship.

A jury was told he recorded a haunting video of his two children laughing and waving goodbye to their mother.

He labelled the video 'The End' and two days later he allegedly strangled four-year-old Yolanda and two-year-old Theo Molemohi with internet cables in a 'symbolic act of punishment.'

She had moved out of the flat they shared in Whalley Range, Greater Manchester, but returned daily to get Yolande ready for school and to care for Theo while Williams went to work as a finance officer for a housing company.

Mr Thomas said: 'On Tuesday 13th October, Miss Molemohi left the children with the defendant and returned to the hotel where she was staying.

'The next morning she went back to the flat to help get her daughter ready for school. The front door was locked from the inside. She had to let herself in through the patio windows. She found the defendant in the bedroom. He was lying on the bed with the two children.

'Miss Molemohi thought the two children were asleep. It was only when she reached out to them she realised they both had cables tied around their necks.

Mr Thomas said: 'There were notes in the flat. They were, in effect, suicide notes, saying goodbye to his wife and colleagues.

'If the defendant had intended to kill himself, he had not got very far. He was still very much alive although he appeared unwell.

'The defendant killed his two children. It was a spiteful and selfish reaction to the breakdown of his marriage. It was a deliberate act and the prosecution say it was murder.'

Manchester Crown Court heard Williams left a sarcastic message attached to the computer which read: 'Mo, use the internet as much as you like, luv Petros.'

Williams, who denies two counts of murder, showed no emotion as the jury were shown a home video labelled 'Daddy, Yolly and Theo. The End video.'

The video, recorded as the children watched X-Factor on the Sunday night before they were killed, shows them waving at the camera saying: 'Goodbye mummy.'

A note found in the flat by the video camera read: 'Play the video we made for your memories. Thankyou Petros.'

He was today jailed for 28 years at Manchester Crown Court after being found guilty of the horrific double murder.

Sentencing, Mr Justice Kenneth Parker told him: 'There is no doubt that you intended to kill them. It is hard to conceive any more shocking crime than a parent deliberately taking the life of his or her child.

'We saw from the video that Yolanda and Theo were happy children, full of love and laughter, with a whole lifetime ahead of them and, above all, absolute trust in their father who, for entirely selfish purposes, would end their brief lives.

'You remain in denial. You have simply refused to come to terms with the enormity of your deeds.

'You have shown not an ounce of remorse in this court. Your pity has been exclusively reserved for yourself.'

A search of the flat revealed a video tape addressed to the childrens' mum, in which the children are asked by Williams to say goodbye to their mummy.

They also found notes saying "meet u in heaven luv Daddy Petros" , "good things come to an end" and "Sorry my lovely Yolly and Theo I loved you and still luv U in death."

The mother of Yolanda and Theo MOLEMOHI has issued the following statement:

I am so proud to have been the mother of Yolly and Theo who brought me so much happiness during their short lives. They were healthy, strong, lively and resilient children. Each had developed differently, and had their own unique personalities, that complemented each other and completed my life. It never ceased to amaze me watching them, celebrating their achievements and wondering at their similarities and their complete differences. It delighted me to have produced two such wonderful, talented and individual children.

In the months that have passed since the children died, the effect upon my life has been tremendous, I know that it will continue to impact upon me for the rest of my life, and I also know that the pain will never go away. The full impact of what has happened has not even hit me yet, and the effects of my loss will continue to develop in ways I cannot yet imagine. Throughout all of this loss, grief and disbelief, has been the constant presence of a detailed and lengthy police investigation and court case.

Whether intentional or not, the circumstances as to how I discovered the children were such as to bring me the most fearful and distressing memories, and I will never be able to wipe the image from my mind, nor forget the terrifying desperate moments when I scrambled to help them, to call for help from others and to do what I could for them while I waited for the Emergency Services to arrive. Try to imagine the panic, the isolation and the sense of uselessness in those moments, as I realised that my most precious children needed me the most and I was unable to save them. I am their mother, I brought them into the world with the unspoken promise that I would always protect them and at the time they needed that the most I could not be there.

I recognise that the implications of what has happened are going to last a lifetime. For that reason amongst others, this statement can never truly tell you what the impact has been on me- although I know its purpose is to do so. I will have to sadly ask you to use your imagination, and think how something like this would devastate you.

I know that I may, if I wish, make comment on the defendant Petros WILLIAMS. I do not wish to discuss this. I have trusted the legal system and justice has been served. I do however wish to take this opportunity to thank the police, the legal team who prosecuted this case and all my friends and family who have supported me.

"I brought them into the world with the unspoken promise that I would always protect them...". Know children, that you were loved and cherished by your mother, her promise still remains in her heart and always. And the light did shine bright in the heavens as the faces of Yolly and Theo came through heavens gates. The wee angels did exclaim, "I know this place of light and joy, it is my mother's heart".
