22 month old ran over by his 12yr old brother

SPRINGDALE, Ark. -- Police said a 22-month-old boy has died after he was accidentally hit by a minivan his 12-year-old brother was backing up.
Springdale police said they responded to the call at 4:18 p.m. Saturday.
Police Sgt. Ed Motsinger said the older brother was moving the minivan so he could play basketball and didn't see the younger child behind him.
Motsinger said an older sister was supposed to be watching the toddler but he was unattended when he was hit by the vehicle.
Motsinger said he didn't know if the parents were home at the time of the accident or if the brother had permission to move the minivan from the driveway.
The names of those involved won't be released until the police report on the accident is finished.

This is a very sad situation. I can't even imagine the guilt this 12yr old and his whole family will feel for the rest of their lives.

Two minutes of bad judgement resulting in a lifetime of guilt and pain. Where was the sitter?

It says that the sister was supposed to be watching the toddler. I'm not real sure where the parents were at the time of the incident. They are not saying.

    Unhappy

That is pretty sad. Both siblings probably feel like shit. I can not even imagine how the parents feel.

This is tragic...rest in peace baby boy, and may your brother somehow let go of the guilt that I know will consume him.

Poor baby. And that poor kid will never get over this. I hope those around him try and support him, and don't make him feel any worse or more guilty than he probably is already.

The thing that strikes me is this:

Motsinger said he didn't know if the parents were home at the time of the accident or if the brother had permission to move the minivan from the driveway.
    He is twelve.

Right on that TG. What the fuck was the twelve year old doing moving the vehicle to begin with. Lazy as adults. Where the hell were the adults when all this went down?

Sad but so preventable. Kids and cars don't mix. This includes 12 yo. and 22 mo.

Rest in peace baby Adrian Manrriquez. I hope your brother can someday forgive himself.

No charges will be filed in the weekend death of a Springdale child.

A police investigation into the death of Adrian Manrriquez determined the fatality was an accident, according to a news release from Sgt. Shane Pegram, public information officer for the Springdale Police Department.

The case was referred to the city attorney's office, which decided no charge will be filed, according to the release.

Adrian, 22 months old, died Saturday after he was struck by a 2003 Dodge Caravan driven by his brother. The brother, 12-year-old Juan Manrriquez Jr., was moving the van so he could play basketball in the driveway, according to the police report. Juan often moved the van in the driveway, according to the children's father, Juan Manrriquez Sr.

The van struck Adrian, who was playing behind the vehicle, according to the report. Juan Jr. was not aware of the location of his brother.

After Adrian was struck, Juan Manrriquez Sr. came outside and attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived, according to the report.

I don't know about that area, but here it is legal for unlicensed drivers to drive on private property. Not that I agree with it (or the ND law that allows 14-year-olds to get licensed).

Springdale is about an hour south of me. I don't know about there in particular, but, here, it is very common for underage drivers to be behind the wheel on private property. I remember learning to drive my mom's car when I was 8yrs old. The difference is, I was NEVER not one time unsupervised (as in parent inside the vehicle telling me what to do at all times) when learning at that young of an age. I would have never had permission to be behind the wheel of a car w/o one of my parents in the vehicle with me, especially not when my little brother was outside playing.
