David Dewayne Collins, 35, of Pocola was arrested Thursday in Fort Smith, Ark., for the shooting death of a Muldrow man whose body was found in what remained of a burned-out home on Lee’s Chapel Road, southeast of Muldrow.

Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart said the body of Shannon Bryan Southern, 20, was found burned and shot multiple times after firefighters doused the fire which destroyed the home.

Lockhart said the investigation indicates that Southern owed Collins $40, and went to Southern’s home in the early morning hours of Sept. 22. The investigation indicates that Collins shot Southern several times, then poured a flammable liquid, possibly gasoline, around the body and set the house on fire. The sheriff said investigators are still waiting on the fire marshal’s report to determine the exact identity of the flammable liquid.

On Sept. 22, after the fire destroyed Southern’s home, which belonged to his grandfather, Kenneth Lewis, firefighters found Southern’s body next to a couch. The fire was reported by a newspaper deliverer at about 6 a.m. and the Muldrow Police Department dispatched the Muldrow, Liberty and Roland Fire Departments at 6:05 a.m. The firefighters reported the home was fully engulfed when they arrived. After firefighters found the body, it was sent to the state medical examiner’s office. Upon learning from the medical examiner the next day that Southern had been shot, Lockhart began an immediate investigation at the scene, and had officers and investigators sifting through the remains of the home looking for clues to Southern’s death.

Lockhart said the investigators interviewed several of Southern’s friends who connected him to Collins, and investigators obtained cell phone records of calls between Collins and Southern, and cell phone messages in which Collins allegedly threatened Southern.

Collins, Lockhart said, “has been in the area about three years. He is originally from North Carolina and was living in Pocola. He has been working in the area and in Roland as a welder, which is how he met Southern.”

Lockhart said in addition to the first-degree murder charge, he anticipates Collins will also be charged with arson and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Collins has a felony record in North Carolina and other areas, Lockhart said the investigation revealed. Lockhart said more information will be revealed when formal charges are filed against Collins.

Shannon Bryan "Buzz" Southern was born January 11, 1989 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the son of William Bryan "Billy" Southern and Tammy Renee (Lewis) Southern. He was a graduate of Roland High School, a welder at Air Compressor Equipment Company and of the Baptist faith. Mr. Southern passed this life on September 22, 2009 in Muldrow, Oklahoma after having attained the age of 20 years, 8 months and 11 days.

Authorities believe Collins went to Southern's house Monday with a pistol to collect $40 Shannon owed him, and wound up killing him.

Shannon's parents, Bill and Tammy Southern of Roland, say they can't understand why this would happen to the son they say would drop anything to help someone.

"He had a friend that died in a car wreck, and Shannon welded a big cross together to put on the side of the road where he wrecked," said Bill.

Shannon also renovated the home his mother grew up in so that he could live in it, the same home that was burned down after his murder. Tammy Southern said they hope prosecutors seek the death penalty for the man that killed their son.

"His life has been just stripped from us. He's only twenty years old, we didn't get to see him get married, have kids, we don't get to see any of that now," she said.

Seems Shannon was a good kid, really!! I feel so sorry for his parents, their child was just beginning his adult life...... I'm sure that Collins was after more than $40.00, I am almost certain that Shannon paid him back or was going to, something else happened, I suppose the text messages sent will reveal a bit more. I'll keep watch!!

The friend said they drove to meet Collins on Sept. 13, and Southern handed Collins $50. Collins handed Southern a pistol and told him to hang on to it because it was worth a lot more than $50. Later, Southern gave the .22 revolver back to Collins.

On Sept. 30 after further interviews and investigations an arrest warrant was issued for Collins. On Oct. 1 Fort Smith Police along with Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Department deputies and OSBI agents arrested Collins.

According to the report Collins admitted he shot and killed Southern. Collins told Ward that he went to Southern’s home to talk to him about some money Southern still owed him. Collins told Ward he took a pistol with him to the door. Collins said he had the pistol in his waistband, according to the report.

Collins told Ward when he knocked on the door and Southern opened it, Southern hit him.

“A fight ensued and Collins ended up shooting Southern while inside the house,” Ward reported.

Collins said he realized Southern was dead and was worried there was evidence that would link him to the crime, according to the report.

Ward reported Collins said he got the .22-caliber revolver which was the same gun Collins previously told Southern to hold. Collins said he grabbed a black semi-automatic pistol belonging to Southern. Collins said he poured gasoline in the living area of Southern’s home and ignited it. Collins told Ward he drove toward Fort Smith and threw both guns into the river between Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Man who pleaded to manslaughter dies in Oklahoma jail

SALLISAW, Okla. (AP) — Sequoyah County authorities say a Pocola man given a 60-year sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter and arson has died in the county jail at Sallisaw.

The Southwest Times Record at Fort Smith, Ark., reports that Sheriff Ron Lockhart said 36-year-old David Dewayne Collins collapsed in his cell about 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Lockhart said no foul play was suspected, and it appeared that Collins had a heart attack.

Collins was convicted in the Sept. 22 death of 20-year-old Shannon Southern. Her body was found by firefighters who fought a blaze at her Muldrow home, and an autopsy determined she had been shot.

A heart attack? Well, what goes around, comes around! Collins just pled and received sentencing on December 13th, he must've been fretting over his prison time at 'the big house' and all that meth had damaged his heart, so.......
