At first, Ironshell said the boy fell at the playground; but he later told police that he caused the injuries. A probable cause affidavit quotes Ironshell as saying,
“I spanked him really hard" and "I hurt my own hand."
Lincoln Police Officer Katie Flood elaborates, “In one recent incident, it was reported that
he spanked the child so hard that both of them fell over.” They fell into a shower stall.
The affidavit states
Ironshell knew the boy was injured after the spanking because of the way the child walked around “stiff-legged.” Ironshell also noted the Darrek’s back was swollen.

Darrek has been released from the hospital and in foster care. Channel 6 News is told he's still coping with some vision and balance problems.
Police have not arrested his 19 year-old mother, but they and Health and Human Services are still investigating. They say she has no criminal history.
Ironshell does have a record for assault and drugs. He's now charged with 2 counts of felony child abuse, facing up to 70 years jail time combined and a $25,000 fine.
A public defender has been assigned his case. Ironshell told a judge Tuesday that he could not afford an attorney. He said he owns a tattoo shop but business has been slow.
If he manages to come up with $5,000 to bond out, he must stay away from children aged 16 or younger per judge’s order.
He asked the judge, “Does that include my own son?”
She replied, “Yes.”
