    Baby found dead in dumpster

Indianapolis - Metro police say two men hunting for scrap metal discovered a baby dead in a dumpster Monday.
It happened in an alley near Illinois and 24th Streets. Detectives from Metro homicide and the Crime Lab are on the scene.

At this point police aren't saying how old they think the infant was. It's also not known whether the baby was alive when it was placed in the dumpster.

    This story will be updated.

So very sad, I wonder what the circumstances were? Not too hard to imagine since baby ended up in the dumpster. Boy or girl? need more details.

    Rest in peace little one.

That's what the article said and it doesn't say the age of the infant so I'll go with baby. Sounds a bit more humane than IT.

Metro police are trying to find out who left a baby in a dumpster on the near north side. Investigators hope the public can help them identify the mother after making the disturbing discovery Monday afternoon.

Someone called police after finding the infant in a dumpster near 24th and Illinois around 1:00 pm. Workers from the coroner's office removed the body from the dumpster and used a sheet to block the view of on-lookers.

Now comes the work of identifying the remains and who they belong to. Metro Chief of Investigations William Benjamin already has a message for the mother.

"We do need answers as what happened and why this termination point occurred here on this lot," said Benjamin.

The couple who found the dead infant did not want to speak on camera. They sat on the back of their pick-up truck stunned by their discovery. As they searched for scrap metal, they never imagined finding remains. The building where the dumpster is located is a closed warehouse.

Damon Hardy is also trying to understand why anyone would do such a thing.

"Don't just disown a child. I just don't think that is right. It's kind of shocking," said Hardy.

"The way this small infant was disposed of, it's got to touch your heart," said Deputy Chief Benjamin.

Crime Lab workers dusted the outside of the dumpster for fingerprint. Although nearby cameras are pointed in other directions, investigators will check to see if anyone is caught on tape.

Police also want to hear from people who know of someone no longer expecting without a newborn.

"This could be a stillborn," said Sgt. Matthew Mount.

Deputy Chief Benjamin promises every resource to not only find the mother but also to make sure she gets any help she needs.

The Marion County Coroner said it will be another day or two before it releases autopsy information on an infant left inside a trash bin. Meanwhile, metro police told 24-Hour News 8 Tuesday that the infant was found wearing a diaper.

The coroner said a forensic anthropologist may be brought in to help determine the exact age of the child.

"This could be a stillborn," said Sgt. Matthew Mount.
Doubt it seriously....baby had a diaper on. More likely a newborn that died either from abuse and neglect, illness or simply discarded like trash with out a care.

They aren't sure if the baby was stillborn, died of natural causes or was a victim of homicide.

Matt Mount of the Indianapolis Police said, "They have to treat it as the worse possible scenario. Hopefully, we are not looking here at a murder but you can't just go in and assume it's something else."

Police said they have no idea about the identity of the mother.

The trash bin is located in an industrial area with no houses nearby.

Baby found in dumpster was prepared for burial

Police say case has been referred to Grand Jury
24-Hour News 8 uncovered exclusive new details regarding the investigation of a baby’s body found in a Dumpster over four months ago.

A couple scrounging for scrap metal found an infant in a Dumpster on October 5.

The Dumpster is long gone from the parking lot in the 2300 block of North Illinois Street.

But the case remains open and referred to a Marion County Grand Jury.

The tiny body bag has been in the Marion County morgue for months.

The Marion County Chief Deputy Coroner Alfarena Ballew said the body was already in the process of decomposing and may have gone through the process of embalming.

She said it’s been difficult to make a positive identification of the infant’s decedent.

Ballew is still waiting for the final analysis from the DNA lab.

"We are going to look at that and find out what the difficulties were, what the challenges were in sort of extracting the DNA and making some sort of analysis," said Ballew.

Ballew also confirms the Marion County Coroner's Office is working with Grand Jury investigators on the case.

In Marion County, a six person Grand Jury convenes every three months to determine whether sufficient facts and evidence exist to file charges. It's a highly secretive process by law. While the baby found in a Dumpster is the subject of the investigation, it’s not clear who is the target of the investigation.

Was this done by a funeral home after the client could not pay? Who has embalming fluid and mortician tools lying around the house???

Hmmm... this should be interesting as it unfolds. Not everyday an embalmed baby turns up in a dumpster. I bet Amy is right and it's something from a funeral home. Even if i somehow had all the tools, I wouldn't know how to do it. (I bet it's on the Net somewhere. though)

Plenty of people go to school and can't get jobs as morticians. I know a couple, actually. The funeral home business usually stays in families and they don't tend to hire outsiders so if you go to school to be a mortician, be prepared to have to open your own funeral home.
I would love to believe that when I die I will live again, that some thinking, feeling, remembering part of me will continue. But much as I want to believe that, and despite the ancient and worldwide cultural traditions that assert an afterlife, I know of nothing to suggest that it is more than wishful thinking.

24-Hour News 8 has learned that prosecutors have spoken to the owners of a building that once housed a business run by a funeral director who has now lost his license.
At one time, funeral director Marvin Boatright was trying to set up a business there - even with a suspended license. Regulators suspended Boatright's license in 2008 for cremating a body against a family's wishes and for charging for services already covered in a funeral contract.
The building at 2330 North Meridian where Boatright had been working is right next to a dumpster where the embalmed body of a baby was discovered last October.
I wonder if the parent(s) were lied to about their baby's handling? Is there an empty casket in the ground this baby was supposed to have been in?

Marvin L. Boatright tried to carry on his family's nearly half-century in the funeral business, but his efforts have unraveled into charges of fraud and forgery.

A Marion County grand jury this week indicted Boatright on charges of racketeering and forgery in a case that alleges he forged 10 death certificates and failed to deposit three customers' payments for prepaid funeral plans into a trust account from 2005 to 2007. Authorities say he also had operated without a funeral director's license after it had been revoked.
    [...]

Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said the investigation was sparked by the discovery in October of an infant's body in a trash bin next to a Near-Northside building used recently by Boatright.

That aspect of the case, focusing on how a baby presumably brought in for funeral services ended up in the trash, still is under investigation. Brizzi said a third DNA testing lab is being enlisted in a so-far unsuccessful effort to confirm the baby's identity.

The baby's likely family, whom Brizzi declined to name, is waiting for closure.

I hope that funeral director rots in hell. I can't imagine being the parents of that poor baby that now have to go through the pain and grief of laying their child to rest AGAIN. What a heartless fucker.

I guess I'm missing something here. If the baby was prepared for funeral services but was trashed instead, how is it the parents of this child weren't alerted by the missing body? Unless they had no desire to view baby's body during service, wouldn't they know baby's body was missing?

This is a very odd development finding out baby was embalmed ready for burial. I'd like to know what happened that baby ended up in the trash and why baby died to begin with.

    [Sigh]

This is a travesty. This guy was too brain deficient to run the administrative side of his funeral operation, and clearly also too deficient to run the operational side either. What a huge disappointment to his family, legacy and community. And now he can add criminal to his resume, albeit another really stupid criminal. Having failed to properly bury this little mite, why couldn't he have done something decent with the body?

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A dead baby found in a dumpster in late 2009 has been identified.

The baby has been identified as Nicholas Moody and was one day old when he died, said Alfarena Ballew, chief deputy coroner in Marion County.

The child’s mother identified the boy in October, about a year after he was found dead. She was tracked down by investigators using possible medical records that linked the child to the mom.

Nicholas had a hospital tag on him when a couple found him while rummaging in the dumpster. The tag showed that the child died at Riley Hospital for Children. He was born on June 10, 2008. He died from pulmonary hypertension due to extreme prematurity.
RIP little Nicholas Moody. I hope you are now at peace.

    This is from last summer.

    http://http://www.wthr.com/story/12587801/indianapolis-funeral-director-indicted?redirected=true

Indianapolis - A former Indianapolis funeral home director was arrested after being indicted by a grand jury.

Marvin Boatright operated a funeral home in the 2100 block of N. Illinois Street. Investigators started looking at Boatright after someone found a baby in a dumpster.

"We're trying to identify that baby through DNA analysis. We literally have been working with two different laboratories, the baby's remains are going to a third laboratory," Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said Thursday.
There have not yet been charges filed related to the baby found in the dumpster, but believe it came from his establishment. Prosecutors say they can link the dead baby to Boatright and have talked with the possible mother of the child.

"But without DNA analysis, there is no way to tell for sure," Brizzi said.

Eyewitness News found a photograph of one of Boatright's funeral home signs near the crime scene, where investigators may have eventually confiscated it as evidence. Prosecutors believe the baby's family may have paid Boatright up to $7,000 for burial services.

"At the end of the day, the baby should have been buried or cremated and that didn't happen," Brizzi said.

The 52-year-old Boatright declined an interview request by Eyewitness News to talk about his arrest and that baby found in the dumpster.
I'm looking for something more recent, but it definitely looked like the little guy was supposed to be laid to rest by this dumbass.

    New info here:

    http://www.fox59.com/news/wxin-baby-...,2945339.story

    4:05 p.m. EST, February 7, 2011 -Indianapolis —

Fox59 News has learned new information in the case of a baby found in a body bag, inside a downtown trash dumpster more than a year ago.

Fox59 News has learned the newborn infant's name was Nicholas Moody. His mother came to the coroner's office just five weeks ago on December 28th to get her baby boy to give him a proper burial.

The child died at Riley Hospital June 11, 2008 of pulmonary hypertension after he was born premature. Little Nicholas' body was embalmbed and discovered in that downtown dumpster October 5th, 2009 more than a year after he died.

Nicholas was partially mummified and had a yellow tag on his foot when he was found in that dumpster near 23rd and Meridian Streets. In addition, Fox59 News has learned the he was wrapped in a hospital gown inside a body bag that had another tag listing his birth, the day he died and the hospital where he died (Riley). The baby was kept at the morge for more than a year as a "John Doe" because we're told police and the prosecutor's office ordered the coroner not to release his identity or any information, saying it would jeopardize the investigation.

Last June, a grand jury indicted former funeral director Marvin Boatright. He was not indicted on this case but 14 other felony counts for racketeering, forgery and theft. A grand jury began meeting after October 2009 when the baby was found. Since then, the case has languished and no charges have come forth so far.

The Marion County Prosecutor's Office released a statement, saying the baby found in the dumpster is an active investigation with the Marion County Grand Jury.

Boatright has never publicly answered questions surrouding suspicions that he may have been involved in this case. He was arrested last June and bonded out the following day.

Like after more than a year had passed, I think so Gidget. Surmising here next, I might be wrong but my guess they paid for a funeral service that did not include gravesite services and Boatright re-used the casket somewhere else down the line. Fucker is that low. The handful of family funerals I have attended included gravesite and in my grandpas case I watched from afar until the dirt was all in place and being tamped. He wanted buried with his WWII medals and I wanted to make sure they remained in his casket.

It just blows me away. I can't imagine the pain of losing an infant and doing the whole funeral home thing in the first place. But to be contacted a year later and told your baby never made it in the ground, we have him here, you have to do it all over again? Unfuckingbelievable.
