A couple who escaped a burning car, leaving their infant behind in a car seat on I-95, have been arrested and charged by Delaware State Police.
Police credited two Good Samaritans, one of them identified in broadcast news reports as Anthony Parsons, with noticing the 6-month-old boy was still in the car and rescuing him.
According to police, Donna Johnson was driving a 2003 Mitsubishi Diamanté southbound on the interstate in Newport when it caught fire about 7:15 last night.
Johnson, 23, pulled over briefly, but then drove off "even though it was visibly on fire" before stopping again a quarter of a mile down the road, state police said in a statement.
Johnson's boyfriend, Cleveland Scott, 34, got out of the car and passersby stopped to help.
Parsons told a TV news crew he help Johnson out and asked if there was anyone else in the car.
Parsons and police said Johnson answered no.
But Parsons checked anyway, found the infant and released him from the car seat.
Johnson, Scott and their child were taken to Christiana Hospital for observation.
Johnson, of Wilmington, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, reckless endangerment and driving without a valid license, registration or insurance.
Scott, of Newark, Del., was charged with reckless endangerment, police said.
