    Deron Towler takes an axe...

A Brannen Street woman remains in critical condition after surgery for wounds inflicted by her son, who attacked her Thursday afternoon with an axe, police said.

Statesboro Police Det. Lt. Thomas Williams said Joelyn Towler, 55, Brannen Street, underwent several hours of surgery for facial and head area injuries, yet was still listed in " critical condition" Friday.

Statesboro Police officers arrested Towler's son, 33-year-old Deron Leonard Towler, on charges of aggravated battery and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.

God, UC, you're such a fucking tease! I was all ready to end the rhyme, and you left me with NOTHING! Next time, how about, "Turned his mom into candle wax"? Or "Ain't gonna pay no property tax"? Or "Got a really negative fax"? Have a heart!

Um, I'd say they have him restrained, considering the bars by his head....

    Unhappy

Deron was class valedictorian and attended MIT before he developed schizophrenia. This is a sad situation for everyone involved.

I bet swivel's mom had high hopes for him at one time, too.

Maybe he shouldn't have gone off his meds....then there would be NO situation to be involved in.

That's an all-too-unfortunate problem in bright young schizophrenics. Once medicated, it becomes incomprehensible to them that they are in need of meds.

My child was heavily recruited by MIT and has a very high IQ. She turned down NYU and MIT, Brown, etc. to study at a small private university. She also has debilitating OCD and an anxiety disorder since she was four. We worked around it, and with it and her for years. But then came college at 17. The stress of moving away from home exacerbated her symptoms until she rapidly decompensated and became nearly nonfunctional in a matter of days. She freaked out, we got her on meds, everything was better within a couple of weeks - it was like turning a lightswitch and getting our kid back.

A few weeks ago she called me in a panic - a panic I have heard far too often from my beautiful girl. The menu where she was eating was all wrong. There was no mango on it, or something, and she was crying. The napkins were folded wrong. What was she supposed to eat? It took me ten minutes to help her through her panic attack, and she was able to get home and call me. Turned out she hadn't had her meds since CHRISTMAS BREAK. She was feeling so much better, she said, that she stopped taking them.

Well holy cats. That was not part of the bargain, said I. I mean, WTF? You're sick, you take the stuff that fixes it, right? But she didn't FEEL sick, she said. Her symptoms had gone away. Well yeah, silly child, said I, because DUH, you were ON THE MEDS. (thwap)

People who are mentally ill and get better on meds don't feel sick. They feel better and stop taking their meds. I will have to remind my child to refill her prescriptions. We will have this argument a lot until she has a few episodes and realizes that no, she can't be off the meds when she feels better. She's been back on for a couple of weeks now and is already back to almost-normal-kid. But she's 18 now, not 33.

I'm sorry for Deron's family and for him. I hope his mother recovers and that Deron gets the help he needs so nothing like this ever happens again. I wish he'd been able to learn that a lot sooner than 33.
