UPDATE @ 6pm Monday
ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Police say a mother's risky actions halted an armed robbery attempt and perhaps prevented something much worse Sunday night at the Colonial Inn Motel.
While some say Renee Haack is a hero, police say what she did by chasing down a possibly armed robbery suspect was much too risky. We found out that one of the three suspects is a fugitive from Kanawha County.
WSAZ.com's Randy Yohe caught up with Haack on Monday and got the whole story from the woman neighbors are now calling "Big Bad Mama."
Haack's son, Wade, said around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, he and some other kids were in the motel office when three people came in armed and wearing Halloween masks.
"They were pointing guns at us," he said. "I got scared, then jetted out to tell my mom."
Wade mother was not happy someone was pointing a gun at her child. She and some other adults ran out and chased down a woman -- robbery suspect Lydia Davis.
"They went around a corner," Renee said. "I saw them and ran one down across the street. I had to react when I found out my kids were targets."
Ashland Police arrived and arrested Davis on robbery charges, explaining that the other two involved in the crime fled in a vehicle.
But police say what Renee did was way too risky.
"Reports say there was a gun involved," Ashland Police Major David Slone said. "This could have been deadly. Instead, they should have called 911."
Renee, however, said her motherly instincts simply took over.
"My kids are the most important thing to me," she said. "I don't take kindly to someone pointing a gun at them. That's not cool."
Initially, the woman captured gave police what they found to be a false name -- Kayla Cline.
On Monday, however, police found out that suspect Lydia Davis is a convicted criminal and fugitive out of Kanawha County -- wanted for violating home confinement after she pulled a semi automatic handgun on a man sitting in his car in the Kanawha Mall parking lot.
Davis is being held in the Boyd County Detention Center. Police said her two suspected accomplices were still on the run as of Monday night.
