3 teens chaged as adults for the murder of 16 year old Derrion Albert

Three teens have been charged with first-degree murder in last week's beating death of a Chicago honor student, authorities said.

Silvonus Shannon, 19, Eugene Riley, 18, and Eric Carson, 16, have been charged as adults in Thursday's death of Derrion Albert, 16, Andy Conklin, a spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney, said Monday. Albert's beating death with wooden boards is depicted in a video that has been circulating on the Internet, and police were using that video to gather evidence.

The video that runs nearly three minutes was shot by a teen girl who is a student at Fenger High School, the same South Side Chicago school near where Albert was beaten,The Chicago Tribune reported. The girl showed the tape to Albert's family before turning it over the police and to a local Fox station, and has asked that her name be kept private because she fears retaliation, Eunice Cross, the grandmother of Albert's half-sister, told The Tribune.

On the tape, Albert is seen being struck repeatedly with wooden boards and is shown on the ground. A woman's voice is heard crying, "Derrion, get up!" over and over again.

The footage shot by the girl provided an additional vantage point to surveillance video that was shot from a camera on top of a nearby community center, The Tribune reported.

The three charged will appear in bond court Monday afternoon, Conklin said.

Family members believe Albert was beaten on his way home from school for refusing to join a gang. But some witnesses say he was only a bystander swept into a violent fight.

This is the sort of stuff that scares me every morning when I kiss my kids before they go to school. It's a sad time in the world. I recall being in high school, and the worst that could happen was getting your ass whooped. But it was never to the degree that kids today go to. We had no weapons, the only weapons we carried were our hands and our loud ass mouths. That was it!!! No metal detectors, no cops on campus. Now when I go into my oldest son's high school, I see things I never thought kids would try to do in front of authorities. Something has gone wrong in this world. More parents have to step up to the plate and start actually doing some parenting.

Just saw the video...it's sickening. Just a bunch of punks who are looking for a fight and lash out on anyone near them, and poor Derrion was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. RIP Derrion

I know that 'smart kids' from that strata of the socioeconomic level are often chided as 'schoolboys' by their peers. As evil as this was, I hope it wasn't due to his effort at trying to gain a meaningful education.

I saw the video on the national news with Brian Williams - nauseating.

A fourth teenager has been charged in the in the beating death last week of a 16-year-old Chicago honor roll student on his way home from school.

The Cook County State's Attorney's office announced late Monday that first-degree murder charges have been filed against 18-year-old Eugene Bailey.

State's attorney spokeswoman Tandra Simonton refused to reveal more about Bailey, saying her office will do so during his appearance in bond court on Tuesday.

Two South Side mothers on Monday confronted the brutal violence their sons are accused of as formal charges against the teens were filed and images of them allegedly beating and stomping to death another teenager made national news.

One tearfully said she could not bear to look at the video. The other regretfully acknowledged it was her son on the video depicting the fatal beating of Fenger High School student Derrion Albert, 16.

"That's Gene. That's my son. I'm not going to lie about that," said Sherry Smith, the mother of Eugene Riley, 18, one of four teens charged in the attack. "I do give my condolences to that family because (their) child shouldn't have lost his life over this."

Carson, who is from the Ville and is charged as an adult, was the first to strike Albert on the head, using a long railroad tie, Assistant State's Attorney . Jodi Peterson said. Albert was knocked out briefly, and when he woke up, a group from Altgeld attacked him. Riley allegedly used a railroad tie again to strike him and Shannon stomped on his head several times, Peterson said.

The families of Carson and Bailey could not be immediately reached, but Smith and Tamaray Shannon, Silvonus Shannon's mother, said there was a lot of tension at the school last week.

She said her son had been chased out of school and stalked between classes by teens from the Ville. Smith, Riley's mother, said she pulled another son, Vashion Bullock, 17, out of Fenger Wednesday because for safety reasons.

Neither Riley nor Shannon have a criminal history, and both hold jobs, their attorney said. Carson was on probation for a 2008 robbery conviction, Peterson said.

Smith believes that Riley was defending his brother in the fight. Shannon, who has not viewed the tape, said she doesn't believe her son would have stomped on Albert's head.

"Silvonus is not a bad kid," said Shannon, 40. "He was protecting himself. Silvonus is not what they are making him out to be."

Chicago police asked the public for help Tuesday in finding three more people believed connected to last week’s videotaped fatal beating of 16-year-old Derrion Albert.

“We need the public’s help, your help,“ Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis told reporters.

With four teens already arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the killing, “we are continuing to look for three additional people in connection with Derrion’s murder,“ Weis said.

Weis said he has asked the U.S. Secret Service to try to enhance the video of the beating so that others can be identified.

Weis pleaded with anyone who may have information not to withhold it.

“The culture of ‘no-snitch’ is unacceptable,“ he said. “A young man with a promising future lost his life to senseless violence, yet few have come forward.“

Authorities are considering charging people who participated in the fight but did not come into contact with Albert, he said.

Why did they keep beating him? There were others they had knocked over the head and onto the ground. Was it cause he kept getting up? That's the only thing I can think of. But it still makes no sense as to why.

I know it must be hard to believe your child is indeed a monster, but hell, the poor kid was on the ground, and Silvonus was stomping on his head. That goes well beyond protecting yourself.

By all accounts that I have heard so far, Derrion was a good kid. Had he lived in a different neighborhood, or gone to a different school, his life story may have gone a completely different way than murdered in cold blood, in broad daylight. May he rest in peace, and may all of the people who were invovled in his death be held accountable. Including those who watched idly and cheered on the attackers. Had they intervened, this poor boy may still have his life.

Your kid obviously has some issues, either anger or trying too hard to be a deusch bag like the rest. You may love your kid, but when they do something like this, you don't just sit back and watch and attempt to stick up for them when there is pure evidence playing over and over nationwide. I have cried every time I see it on the news. That all stopped when fucking anger set in. I watched one of the mothers just go on about how he couldn't have done that.
