Marcy Pappalardo needed $10 for gas; offered up her son

A 37-year-old woman was arrested Friday afternoon after a tow truck driver told officers that she had offered to sell her child in exchange for gas money, Melbourne police said.

Marcy Pappalardo faces a charge of child neglect in connection with the incident. Police are continuing their investigation and additional charges may be added.

Sgt. Michael Casey of the Melbourne Police Department said they received a 911 call at about 3 p.m. from a tow truck driver who said a woman had tried to sell him her 6-year-old boy in exchange for gas money at a gas station.

The driver refused the offer and then followed the mother, who was in a white sedan with her child and another woman as he called authorities, according to police.
    [...]

Her 6-year-old boy sat on the trunk of the car and cried as his mother was led away.

Mallory Acker, a friend who was in the car with Pappalardo, told police the tow truck driver requested sex with the mother in exchange for gas money.

“When she refused, he made up this story for police,” Acker said.
    [...]

Melbourne police said they were in the process of contacting the child’s father.

The woman was accused of offering to sell her child for $10 at an intersection several miles down US-1, but she was followed and stopped by police.

Officers questioned the woman and her friend before deciding to arrest her on child neglect charges.

Even as she was being cuffed and put in the back of a patrol car Marcy Pappalardo denied trying to sell her son for gas money.

"Call 'em and tell him I'm going to jail," Pappalardo said. "He's a liar."

A tow truck driver said she pulled up next to him at a red light and made a proposition he couldn't believe.

"She asked me if I wanted to give her some gas money for the kid in the back, that's exactly what she said."
    [...]

    She said he was lying.

"I have a thousand dollar TV flat screen. If I needed the money I'd brought it to the pawn shop," Pappalardo said.
    [...]

The passenger in the car with Pappalardo admitted she was just released from jail Thursday after being arrested on drug charges.

She said they did ask him for money, but that was it.

She does not look like that much of a hot piece of ass that a tow truck driver would make up such a lie... but you never can tell about some people.

I believe the tow truck driver. Video at second link shows her hollering about the liar while her son cries. I would be more worried about my kid.

OMG what a POS human. All of that, true or not, is not something the kid needed to see. I am so sad for the kid.

I chose not to believe it...
My grandson is 6. I can't imagine anyone doing that to a 6 year old; a 16 year old, maybe.. just kidding.

I agree though. I would be much more concerned about being seperated from my child. I would be trying to comfort him, at least I'd hope that's what I'd do.

That they asked someone for money at a stop light in itself is weird. I can't imagine the towtruck driver hearing it wrong... 'blow job' sounds nothing like 'kid'

After watching the video I do believe the man in the truck. What does he have to gain from lying, nothing. Actually he will probably get into trouble if he is lying.

The mother did run off at the mouth instead of worrying about her son. If that were me I would be yelling to my son things like it will be alright mommy loves you, instead of going off about the man in the truck.

The little boys face tells it all.

He loves the fat cow even tho it seems she cares not for him. If I were low on gas I would be at home instead of riding around begging for gas money with my 6 year in the back.

Poor baby maybe he'll get a better home.

Perhaps the boy would have been worth more if he had been white.

And of course there's absolutely no chance the tow-truck driver made the allegation due to that fact. Right... because that would be wrong and unheard of.

Altho this woman comes across as complete trash in the video, I still have a hard time believing she would seriously attempt to sell her son for $10. The more likely scenario is that she got pissed off that the tow truck driver wouldnt give her any money, ran her mouth, and pissed him off just a bit too much.

Besides, bottom dollar for a kid these days is $50. ;)

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Prosecutors have dropped charges against a 37-year-old Melbourne woman accused of trying to sell her 6-year-old son to a tow truck driver in exchange for $10 in gas money.

Police last month arrested Marcy Pappalardo on one count of child neglect after following up on a tip from the truck driver, who said Pappalardo was in the car next to him at a stoplight near a U.S. 1 gas station when she made the offer.

Authorities said the man rolled up his window and followed Pappalardo until they arrived at the gas station, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.

Pappalardo denied the allegations, and a passenger in her car claimed the driver made up the story because Pappalardo turned down sexual advances, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors decided there was no serious intent on Pappalardo's part to sell the boy, Assistant State Attorney Julia Lynch said.

Child neglect is a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

"What it comes down to is it was inappropriate remarks that were made at a traffic light, regardless of who said them," Lynch said. "You don't have this woman making any serious steps toward really trying to carry this act out."
