Christopher Newberry raped and set his step-daughter on fire

A Haysville father has pleaded guilty to setting his step daughter on fire. Chris Newberry also pleaded guilty to one count of rape and five counts of arson. Prosecutors added the new count of rape today.

Newberry was charged with one count of Attempted Murder in the fire in March of 2009. His 10-year-old step-daughter was badly burned in that fire. She is now recovering. Her grandmother said the girl now wants to be an Olympic runner.

"She loves school, she loves riding her bike. She's a regular kid." Her gradmother continued, "Now, she has her ups and down days, and emotions get to her, of course. And she asks why me, what did I do wrong? And stuff that like that. And I reassure her, it wasn't you. Someone made a lot of bad choices, and it wasn't her fault."

At the time, investigators said the fire started in the girl's bedroom but never pinpointed the source. Months later, court documents say he sprayed her and her bed with lighter fluid as she slept, then lit her on fire in an attempt to kill her.

In court Wednesday, Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc Bennett said Newberry's four year old daughter watched the man douse her 10 year old half-sister with lighter fluid. "She described having been removed by the defendant," said Bennett, "and stepping back into the room, and watching him light her sister on fire."

Investigators say Newberry sexually assaulted the girl several times over the year, but the victim could only remember one in particular. Social workers investigated several times, but the victim's grandmother says the victim was too afraid to say anything at the time.

"She was scared to death because he threatened to hurt her or kill her," her grandmother told Eyewitness News Wednesday. "And he almost did, and he almost got away with it. But thank God, he didn't."

Newberry is set for sentencing late next month. He will be sentenced under Jessica's Law. It requires him to serve 25 years in prison before he's eligible for parole. He's agreed to spend the rest of his life on probation if he's ever released.

The girl's grandmother gives Newberry credit for admitting his guilt, and sparing the girl, and her half-sister, the pain of testifying in court. As she left the courthouse, she summarized what she was going to tell the 10 year old.

"I'm going to say he pled guilty to everything, you do not have to go through a trial," she said. "There will be sentencing in October. So that's it, he can never hurt you again."

Note: In the past, we have reported the name of the victim in this case. However, now that we have learned she is a victim of sexual assault, we have chosen to no longer report the name.

The 10-year-old girl woke up when she heard the click, click, click of a lighter.

A prosecutor told the girl's story Wednesday morning, as her stepfather pleaded guilty to having sex with the girl, then setting her on fire last March.

Chris Newberry, 28, pleaded guilty to rape, attempted murder and multiple counts of aggravated arson.

The plea agreement filed in Sedgwick County District Court will send him to prison for life with no chance of parole for about 40 years.

"But under the plea agreement, he will have a chance of seeing a parole board, when he's a very old man," said Mark Rudy, Newberry's public defender.

About the only consolation prosecutor Marc Bennett gave Newberry was that no more sex abuse charges would be filed against him.

"This happened a multitude of times prior to the fire," Bennett told Judge Jeff Goering.

Then on March 14, Bennett said, the 10-year-old and her stepsister slept in bunk beds.

Newberry removed the 4-year-old girl, his own daughter, from the top bunk and carried her out of the room, Bennett said.

    Click, click, click.

The older girl told authorities she remembered hearing the clicks of the cigarette lighter in her bed, Bennett told the judge.

Newberry had already doused her with lighter fluid.

The younger girl later reported walking back in the room to see her father set her stepsister ablaze, Bennett said.

Newberry's wife and his own three children fled the trailer, which was destroyed by fire. Newberry had later gone back into the house to pull his stepdaughter out.

The oldest girl suffered burns over more than 40 percent of her body. But she survived.

Family members said they had suspected the sexual abuse for some time.

Linda Johnson, the grandmother who is now caring for the girl, said she had just one question for Newberry: "Why?"

"Why couldn't you get help for your problem?" Johnson said afterward. "But at least you were able to own up to it."

Johnson expressed relief that neither the older girl nor her younger sister would have to testify at a trial. The other children are living with their mother.

Meanwhile, the 10-year-old continues to recover.

"She has lots of goals. She wants to run in the Olympics someday," Johnson said. "I can't run with her. But I said, 'well, it's been fun going through all the physical therapy with you.' "

This really pisses me off. If they suspected it, why didn’t they check it out further? An examination could confirm their suspicions, and they owed it to this girl. I sure hope she has the strength to overcome all of this.

There always seems to be family, neighbors and friends running around after the fact saying"I suspected as much" after someone is found to be abusing their children. I think there should be charges brought against these morons for their failure to help the defenseless children. I mean how involved do you really get by making a 5 minute phone call to children services or the police. If you are worried about the abusers knowing who called, USE A PAY PHONE and don't leave your name.

This is probably the safest way... but know what I could care less if these abusers knew it was me. I would make sure these bastards knew who did it.

I agree that they should be arrested if the abuse was obvious or the child has spoken out and was not believed but most of the time sexual abuse is not obvious.

I was molested by my father when I was a child and my mother started to have a feeling that something was up after they had separated. She asked my brothers and I on several occasions if anything was up and we all said no even though my older brother knew. I can't speak for my brother but I was terrified that my Mom would be mad at me or would even hate me. Prior to knowing, my mother even mentioned to her best friend that she was going to really have to watch my father with me when I got older but she never pressed very hard or had anything investigated because she didn't want to believe that the man that she married and had children with was capable of that. I don't blame her. When I did tell her the truth, she called the police and social services. I would definitely blame her if she hadn't done that but before that, there were behavioral signs but there was nothing that she could have proven.

Bridget Dietrich is behind bars on charges of child endangerment in connection to a fire that burned her 10 year-old daughter.

The fire happened in March in Southeast Wichita. Investigators won't give specifics on the arrest of Dietrich. They say it is in connection with the fire. The arrest documents show Dietrich failed to protect the girl from abuse at the hands of the suspect.

Last week Dietrich's husband, Chris Newberry pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder and rape of the little girl. He admitted to pouring lighter fluid on the girl and then setting her on fire.

She did survive the fire, but has severe burns.

Dietrich's five children are now with family. The little girl who was burned lives with her grandmother.

Man gets life for raping step-daughter, setting her on fire
A Haysville man will serve life plus 165 months in prison for raping his step-daughter, and setting her body on fire. Chris Newberry was sentenced Thursday for attempted murder, arson and rape charges. A judge also ruled Newberry will not be eligible for parole until 2047.
    [...]
The girl now lives with her grandmother, who says the girl has been through a lot. But she calls her granddaughter a survivor. The grandmother did not speak in court, but the State read a statement on her behalf.

"She is doing well," said Sedgwick County District Deputy Marc Bennett. "She just made honors choir, she's a pretty remarkable kid."

But Bennett knows the victim has a long road ahead.

"In this case, there is not just emotional scares, there are debilitating, horrible physical scars that she has to live with every day," Bennett said. "Its an astonishing case, a horrible, horrible case."

Newberry's wife and the girl's mother, Bridget Dietrich, plead guilty to child endangerment. She was sentenced to 12 months probation. Dietrich completed that sentence in October 2011.

Several way I do not want to die.

Other than listening to Micheal Jackson or Mariah Carey music, my number top 2 hateful deaths would be drowning and fire.

If I do get badly burned by fire, I hope it kills me. People in burn units are as close to hell as you can possibly be without actually being dead. the pain and suffering is apocalyptic. This sick bastard never took this into consideration the lifetime of suffering he inflicted. There should be a higher punishment than LWP but just under the DP, so he has to endure it.

People who have drown and been brought back have said that drowning is almost peaceful once you get past the struggling part. Maybe I just want to believe that's true because my grandma drown.

For me the worst would be being buried alive, that's what they should do to this fucker.

Buried alive, drowning and burning alive would be my 3 most scariest ways to die. We could do three of two. We can bury this mother fucker like a roasted pig in the ground. Just make the whole deeper than you would at a luau. After all he is a pig.
