TAMPA — Tampa police arrested a 29-year-old man at his house Friday after witnesses say he pointed a gun a landscaping crew at a park, then drove away.
Lt. Brian Dugan said police surrounded suspect Gabriel Piniella's home, 4911 N Arrawana Ave., around 1 p.m., after getting a call from someone concerned about Piniella's state of mind.
Police say the suspect was parked earlier at Capaz Park near N Habana Ave and W Columbus Drive, when he became angered that a landscape crew was doing its work close by.
After he got out of the car and pointed a gun at the crew, he drove away and called someone from his cell phone, Dugan said.
That person contacted police and, before long, a police hostage negotiator was on the phone with Piniella. Dugan said officers called for back up from its tactical squad to surround the home, but the incident ended peacefully around 1:40 p.m.
The negotiator asked Piniella to come out of the house. He did.
Though family members expressed concern to police about Piniella's mental state, police brought him to Orient Road Jail, where he was expected to be booked on a charge of aggravated assault.
Officers recovered a shotgun and a pistol from the residence.
Piniella's family expressed concern that he was armed, Dugan said. They had taken another gun from him in the past, he said.
