HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Police in High Point said a man hit a 2-year-old with his car while the child was celebrating a birthday Saturday night.
Maurice Deon Belser, 23, was charged with careless and reckless driving and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
Police said Belser was driving his vehicle in a careless and reckless manner in the 600 block of Amos Street at about 8:30 p.m.
At 603 Amos St., there was an ongoing party for 2-year-old Andre Wright. Due to the party, there was a crowd in the roadway and in the yard, police said.
Without regard for the people in the roadway, police said, Belser continued to accelerate his vehicle and ran over Wright.
The child was taken to High Point Regional Hospital, and then later transferred to Baptist Hospital. He has severe head injuries from the crash.
Belser was placed into the Guilford County Jail-High Point under a $30,000 secured bond. He has since been released on bond.
Belser issued an apology to Wright's family on Sunday. The boy was released from intensive care, but he's at Brenner's Children's Hospital with a fractured skull.
Belser told police that Wright was stuck under his vehicle and he didn't even know the boy was there.
Wright's family said the intersection is dangerous and it wants stop signs in place instead of yield signs.
