Annie Le, Yale Student and Bride to Be is missing *found deceased*

New Haven (WTNH) - Is it a case of a runaway bride, or something more sinister? The FBI have joined state and local police in a search for a Yale graduate student who vanished from the New Haven campus on Tuesday, September 8th.

News Channel 8's Erin Cox says FBI agents entered a building at 12 Amistad Street. Annie Le, 24, was last seen on a surveillance video entering 10 Amistad Street and was not seen since.

Earlier in the day, Yale Police were outside the building with a photo of Le as they search for information.

Yale police said they are pursuing all leads. Dogs were brought in to pick up her scent and help track her down, but they were unsuccessful.

"Law enforcement officers are continuing to undertake detailed searches of the surrounding area; and security officials are reviewing images from closed-circuit cameras in the area," Yale Chief of Police James Perrotti said in a statement.

Co-workers say she just vanished leaving behind all her belongings and her future husband, who she was to marry on Sunday.

"I found out when someone came into the office and asked if I had seen Annie, I said no," said co-worker Debbie Apuzzo. "She left her pocketbook, cell phone in the lab; she didn't go home last night. So, everybody is pretty worried [and] pretty scared."

Friends say she's very hard working, reliable, respectable and has many achievements and accomplishments in her field.

"A lot of good friends and a wonderful fiance [that] she is going to marry on Sunday. We all love her a lot," student Tara Bancroft said.

"Energetic, always smiling, they loved her in the lab, great future ahead of her, and we are praying that she is going to pop up somewhere and we are not going to look at the worst here," said Apuzzo.

The pharmacology student is from California and received her undergraduate degree at the University of Rochester.

Ironically, Le penned a crime and safety article for B Magazine , a Yale publication, in February.

Le is Asian with brown, shoulder length hair and brown eyes. She weighs 90 pounds and is 4'11". She was last seen wearing a knee-length brown skirt, a bright green short-sleeved t-shirt, brown shoes and a brown necklace entering her lab on Amistad Street.

Anyone with information on Le's whereabouts is asked to contact the Yale Police Department at (203) 432-4400.

The FBI and Connecticut State Police have also joined the search for Le, who is engaged to Jonathan Widawsky, a graduate student at Columbia University.

Widawsky, who was helping cops with the search, was supposed to marry Le in New York on Sunday, according to their wedding web site.

Le, who is from Placerville, Calif., is working on a doctorate in pharmacology at Yale's School of Medicine. She got her undergraduate degree at the University of Rochester in 2007 and was conducting an experiment at a Yale lab when she disappeared.

The grad student used her Yale ID card to check into the facility at 10 a.m., police said.

Cops are checking the lab's video camera footage to see if Le left when the building was evacuated at 1 p.m. after someone pulled a fire alarm.

"We have been looking now at all the tapes of every exit and entrance over the entire 24 hours, just to see if there's any information we can give to law enforcement agencies," Yale University veep Linda Lorimer told the Yale Daily News.

Le's roommate in New Haven reported her missing when she didn't come home Tuesday, police said.

Debbie Apuzzo, who works in the pharmacology department, told the Associated Press that Le was excited about getting married and described her as energetic and conscientious.

Jonathan Widawsky, the fiance of missing graduate student Annie Le MED '13, is cooperating with investigators as law enforcement officials continue to search for Le, University Vice President and Secretary Linda Lorimer said in a telephone interview this afternoon.

"They've talked to him," said Lorimer, who added that "there's not a worry about" his possible involvement in the disappearance.

Widawsky — who has not spoken publicly about Le’s disappearance — is currently a graduate student at Columbia Universtiy. He did his undergraduate work at the University of Rochester, which Le also attended. The two are scheduled to be married on Sunday.

Cops questioned a Yale professor Friday in the case of a graduate student who went missing just days before her New York wedding, a police source told the Daily News.

Annie Le, a 24-year-old doctoral student in pharmacology, was supposed to attend the professor's class on Tuesday afternoon.

But the class was abruptly canceled - and hours later, Le was discovered missing.

The sudden cancellation near the time when Le is believed to have disappeared aroused suspicions
among law enforcement, a New Haven police source said.

It was unclear what class was canceled or if the professor is a suspect.
    [...]

Her purse, cell phone, credit cards and cash were found at the lab later that day. She has not contacted anyone since.

Hundreds of cops and FBI agents searched for clues Friday at Yale, which offered a $10,000 reward for information on Le's disappearance.

Meanwhile, family members canceled her wedding, which was set for tomorrow morning on Long Island.

A Yale University graduate student who disappeared less than a week before her wedding wrote an article in Medical School magazine about how to stay safe on campus.

Annie Le's article, "Crime and Safety in New Haven," was published as a cover story in February. It compared higher instances of robbery in New Haven to other Ivy League cities.

"Despite safety measures such as door-to-door escort and shuttle services, the Yale community is still plagued with thefts, some involving frightening confrontations," Le wrote in "B Magazine" seven months ago.
    [...]

For the article, Le interviewed Yale's chief of police, James Perrotti, who offered advice such as "pay attention to where you are" and "avoid portraying yourself as a potential victim."

Unfortunately, it doesn't look very hopeful:

Sources: Bloody clothing found at Yale

New Haven (WTNH) - Bloody clothing has been found in ceiling tiles at 10 Amistad Street, the Yale building where Annie Le was last seen, law enforcement sources tell News Channel 8.

The sources tell News Channel 8's Erin Cox the area where the items were found is now considered a crime scene.

New Haven Police Chief James Lewis would only tell News Channel 8 that no body has been found.

ETA: Fox61 in New Haven is reporting that unconfirmed police sources say that a/her body has been found in the building (I'm not sure how accurate such "unconfirmed sources" generally turn out to be):

Investigators found bloody clothes stuffed in the ceiling where missing Yale graduate student Annie Le was last seen Athorities emptied the building at 10 Amistad St. in New Haven Saturday afternoon and declared it a crime scene.
Police sources told Fox 61 in New Haven that they found Le's body inside the building.

The building houses the university's molecular biology labs. Investigators questioned a man outside her lab Saturday morning - then put him in an unmarked car with an FBI agent and drove away.

Officials would not say whether the man was a suspect or a witness. Le, a 24-year-old doctoral student in pharmacology, was last seen around 10 a.m. Tuesday at the lab on the Yale Medical School complex, about a mile from the main campus.

Body Of Missing Yale Student Found

NEW HAVEN - Police sources are telling Fox 61 that the body of missing Yale Student Annie Le has been found inside the building where she was last seen.

Investigators Schedule 5:30 P.M. Briefing On Missing Yale Student

NEW HAVEN - Investigators leading the search for Annie Le, the 24-year Yale graduate student missing since Tuesday, have scheduled a briefing for 5:30 p.m.

Fox61 is reporting that police sources have told the station that Le's body has been found in the research building where Le was last seen.

The press briefing comes at the end of a day full of unconfirmed reports that police have found evidence related to Le's disappearance.

Le, who was to be married Sunday on Long Island, has been the focus of a massive search since her disappearance. Dozens of Yale, New Haven and state police and FBI agents have been involved in the search, which in the last day or so has focused on the research building at 10 Amistad St.

Le was last seen entering that building about 10 a.m. Tuesday. Investigators, who spent hours pouring over surveillance tapes, have been unable to identify Le leaving the building.

Investigators pored over blueprints and surveillance video footage Saturday at a Yale University laboratory building where a graduate student went missing just days before her wedding.

Security records show Annie Le swiped her identification card to enter the building about 10 a.m. Tuesday, but there is no record of her leaving, despite some 75 surveillance cameras that cover the complex.

Nearly a dozen unmarked police cars lined the sidewalks around the laboratory building in the Yale Medical School complex.

University Vice President and Secretary Linda Lorimer called it "entirely perplexing that there doesn't seem to be a record of her" leaving the building, according to the Yale Daily News. Lorimer didn't immediately return a phone call to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Investigators, having already gone through the videos once, were reviewing the surveillance tapes frame-by-frame to see if they overlooked Le, who could have changed into a laboratory coat or other clothes before leaving the building.

On Saturday, they brought what appeared to be blueprints to the building. FBI agents were also spotted questioning an unidentified man outside the lab. When they finished talking, the man got in the front seat of the unmarked car and an FBI agent got in the back seat. The car then drove away.

Agent Bill Reiner said the FBI wouldn't answer any questions about the investigation while it's ongoing.

Yale is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Le's whereabouts. She is described as of Asian descent, 4 feet 11 inches tall and 90 pounds. Her purse, cell phone, credit cards and money were found in her office.

Le, originally from Placerville, Calif., was set to get married Sunday at the North Ritz Club in Syosset, N.Y. Workers at the club say the wedding was canceled Friday.

Police say fiance Jonathan Widawsky, a Columbia University graduate student, is not a suspect and is assisting with the investigation.

Meanwhile at Le's apartment building across town, hopes for Le's safe return waned.

"I feel bad what happened to her," said Anna Beth Funk, who lives across the street from Le's apartment. "It broke my heart hearing she was about to get married because I love being married and it must be so hard for her fiance."

Wesleyan University professor Charles Lemert, who also lives across the street, said Le always took time to talk to his 11-year-old daughter.

"I wish more than anything this could be solved and turn into some kind of misunderstanding, but it seems bleak," he said.

This case really bothers me. Maybe because at her age, I was a newlywed grad student.

How heart breaking! Her family and fiance must be devastated. I hate to admit when the reports said there was no video footage of her leaving my mind went to the cleaning lady that was found in an air vent recently...I figured either she pulled off a runaway bride or something horrible happened.

I hope they catch who ever did this to her, at 4'11" and 90lbs it doesn't seem like she had much hope of defending herself.

Hmmm...press conference statement categorically denied that a body had been found. I wonder if the unnamed source was just jumping to conclusions, or if it means something grimmer (ie, an entire/identifiable body hasn't been found).

Ugh. The very thought of it. Poor girl.....the horror she must have gone through. I find it VERY interesting a professor cancelled a class she was to attend....before anyone knew she was missing.

I knew from the beginning she wasnt a runaway bride....she would not have left her purse and belongings behind.

My heart goes out to her finace and her entire family. You are just not safe anywhere.

It's sad and true. So young and obviously she had a bright future. I hope they find out what happened to her and bring some justice for her and her family.

Same here .. when I heard about the canceled class and then the fire alarm and the building being evacuated, I had a very uncomfortable feeling about this.

Wonder who this guy was that they were questioning in the car then took away? Perhaps the professor?

If they haven't found the body, well, I wonder where in the world she is. This is really heart-wrenching.

HARTFORD -- Federal authorities and state police canine teams are searching a landfill in Hartford this morning for missing Yale graduate student Annie Le, who hasn't been seen since Tuesday.

State police canine units from across Connecticut and the FBI are combing through the landfill after receiving information that Le may have been buried there.
    http://www.rep-am.com/news/doc4aace5...8508391620.txt

Bloody clothing was found Saturday inside a sciene laboratory building where missing Yale student Annie Le was last seen Tuesday morning, numerous sources told the New Haven Register.

Sources close to the investigation said the clothing was found stuffed in a drop ceiling in the five-story building where Le worked, according to the newspaper.

But the FBI has not confirmed the reports, telling reporters Saturday that only "potential evidence" has been seized in the search for Le, a 24-year-old pharmacology graduate student who disappeared days before she was scheduled to be married. Le was last seen Tuesday entering the lab building on 10 Amistad Street in New Haven, Conn.

Parts of the building have been labeled a crime scene, WTNH-TV reported Sunday.

"Items that could potentially be evidence have been seized. None have yet been associated with Annie Le,” FBI Special Agent Kim Mertz said while declining to confirm reports that the evidence included bloody clothing.

Mertz also told reporters Saturday evening that there was no truth to a report that a body had been found.

"We are not in a position to conclude whether this is a missing persons case or whether criminality is involved," Mertz said.

University officials have urged the public not to jump to conclusion.

"The investigation is at a very difficult stage," University Vice President and Secretary Linda Lorimer said, adding that many agencies are working together to find out what happened to the student.

She said Le's family, which has asked for privacy, doesn't think Le would simply run away.

Le was last seen about 10 a.m. Tuesday morning on surveillance camera outside a lab in the Yale School of Medicine complex, less than a mile from the main campus.

About the same time, she swiped her Yale ID at the facility's entrance. There was no footage of her leaving the building, in spite of a fire alarm that went off about 12:40 p.m. The alarm isn't thought to be connected to her disappearance.

I was watching CNN earlier and they have cadaver dogs and the blue prints to the building just to make sure they havent missed a spot b/c shes not seen leaving that building. But shes teeny tiny they couldve put her in anything and removed her or she couldve had cold feet(although i dont think thats it).But either way shes so tiny they couldve packed her into anything and smuggled her out of there which Im sure they are and have checked but theres always someone smarter so we will have to wait and see or theres a chance will will file this under Jimmie Hoffa and the rest of them b/c CNN said theres not 1 drop of evidence anyplace showing foul play.

updated 20 minutes ago Bloody clothes tested for link to Yale student(CNN) --
The FBI says it is examining materials that have been discovered that may be linked to missing Yale graduate student Annie Le.

Annie Le, 24, has not been seen by family, friends or co-workers since Tuesday, police say.

A law enforcement source close to the investigation tells CNN bloody clothes are among the potential evidence being tested to see whether the blood is Le's.

The source added the clothes were found hidden in ceiling tiles in the medical research building where Le was last seen Tuesday.

"All I can say is items that could potentially be evidence have been seized. None have yet been associated with Annie Le," New Haven's FBI Agent in Charge Kim Mertz said Saturday at a news conference.

Mertz added that the items are being tested in more than one laboratory, but declined to say where.

Le, 24, was to be married Sunday in Long Island, New York. Her fiance, Jonathan Widawsky, is a graduate student at Columbia University in New York.

It is not uncommon for the FBI to help local police departments by using its laboratory in Quantico, Virginia. The Connecticut State Police also has a forensics lab in Meriden.

"We are not in a position today to conclude whether this is a missing person's case or whether criminality is involved," Mertz told reporters.

Yale University officials said at least 100 agents with the FBI, New Haven police and Connecticut State Police are assisting in the investigation.

Le was last seen on a Yale security camera entering a medical research building at about 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Investigators say they have spoken with students and others in the building who confirm she was there.

Authorities have not found images of her leaving the building. The FBI says investigators are reviewing the video "frame by frame."

Yale Vice President and Secretary Linda Lorimer said Saturday there is "no reason to believe" that Le may have run away.

During the evening, as many as six uniformed Yale and New Haven police officers stood guard outside the building's main entrance and the ramp to its parking garage. They carefully checked IDs of people who tried to get in, and turned away several. One woman arrived with a Yale ID card and told them she'd been called in to work that evening, but they sent her away, saying the basement -- where she was assigned to work -- was closed off.

I have my doubts she was a victim of a local city thug.

I Doubt it also but they have to check every angle I guess and that was one of the ones they had to check out.Not like it was the mafia or anything just local punks,.She looks like my brothers wife, they could be sisters!!And with her being small,Im small barely hit 5 feet and this is stupid but its nothing for a guy to literally pick you up and walk with you. When I was working at the bar paying student loans my brothers buddy came in and literally threw me over his shoulder walked out with me before 3 bouncers jumped on him.I had to pull them off explaining who he was and wasnt dangerous. But Im just saying its nothing to grab her and walk off with her.

updated 10 minutes agoPolice: Missing student case now a homicide investigation (CNN)
-- Investigators probing the disappearance of Yale graduate student Annie Le have declared the case a homicide, police said Sunday.

Annie Le, 24, has not been seen by family, friends or co-workers since Tuesday, police say.

New Haven, Connecticut, police said they found the remains of a person inside the Amistad Building of Yale University and they assume it is Le.

Le was last seen on a Yale security camera entering a medical research building at about 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Authorities have not found images of her leaving the building.

The 24-year-old was to be married Sunday in Long Island, New York.

Investigators were testing bloody clothes Sunday and searching a landfill.

The clothes were found hidden in ceiling tiles in the Yale medical research building where Le was last seen Tuesday, a law enforcement source close to the investigation told CNN.

The FBI said only that it is examining materials that have been discovered and may be linked to the case.

"All I can say is items that could potentially be evidence have been seized. None have yet been associated with Annie Le," FBI Agent in Charge Kim Mertz said Saturday at a news conference in New Haven, Connecticut .

The law enforcement source told CNN bloody clothes are among the potential evidence being tested to see whether the blood is Le's.

Mertz said the items found are being tested in more than one laboratory, but declined to say where. It is not uncommon for the FBI to help local police departments by using its laboratory in Quantico, Virginia. The Connecticut State Police also has a forensics lab in Meriden.

William Reiner of the FBI's New Haven office said Sunday that investigators are searching a waste facility that normally handles garbage from the Yale lab. He described it as a routine step.

"In a situation like this, it's common for us to follow the trash," Reiner said.

The search was taking place at the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority landfill in Hartford.

Yale officials said at least 100 investigators, including agents with the FBI, New Haven police and Connecticut State Police, are assisting in the probe.

Le's fiance, Jonathan Widawsky, is a graduate student at Columbia University in New York.

Yale Vice President and Secretary Linda Lorimer said Saturday there is "no reason to believe" that Le may have run away

Annie Le and her fiance Jonathan Widawsky
Police found a body thought to be missing Yale graduate student Annie Le stuffed inside a wall in her lab Sunday night.

The body was found at the lab on Amistad St. in New Haven on what would have been the pharmacology student's wedding night.

Reichard said the body was found at about 5 p.m. Sunday in a chase — a vertical space used for ducts, pipes or wires — in the building at 10 Amistad St. in New Haven. It was discovered on the same day she was to be wed in Syosset.
