A 51-year-old man is in jail because he thought two people outside his North Broadway motel were talking about him early Thursday and he couldn't resist challenging them, police said.

A 23-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were talking about a man named Larry in the parking lot of a motel in the 1200 block of North Broadway at about 7:15 a.m.

A room occupant named Larry overheard them, went outside and began fighting with the man, police said.

The two exchanged punches before Larry pulled out a knife and cut the other man in the abdomen, then returned to his room, where he was later arrested. The victim was treated at the scene.

Police said the two people in the parking lot told them they were talking about a different Larry.
