Cop blew it, Anthony Flye is on the run

A court officer who was supposed to be watching an accused child rapist at a New Bedford hospital yesterday allegedly uncuffed the man, let him call his girlfriend and use the bathroom before slipping away unseen.

During a press conference this afternoon, Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson called the escape a shocking “breakdown in security.”

Hodgson said a Trial Court officer allowed 38-year-old Anthony Flye of Nantucket to be uncuffed and go unattended into a bathroom at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, where he was being treated following a failed courthouse escape.

When Flye didn’t come out, the officer realized that there was another exit to the bathroom and Flye had apparentlly used it, Hodgson said.

Bristol County Sheriff’s spokesman Bernie Sullivan said Flye - who faces a slew of sex charges including incest - is considered at risk to reoffend and authorities are doing everything they can to find him.

Authorities consider Flye - who lived in a $1 million Nantucket home - so dangerous that they moved his family to a secure location.

“I would say he certainly is a dangerous person,” Sullivan said.

Flye was injured yesterday morning after his arraignment in New Bedford Superior Court, where he jumped head-first from the second-floor stairs, according to the Bristol District Attorney’s office. He was taken to St. Luke’s for treatment at 12:45 p.m. and escaped sometime around 3 p.m., Hodgson said.

Hodgson said the sheriff’s office wasn’t notified of the escape until 5:10 p.m., when a manhunt was launched.

Flye was being held on $500,000 cash bail prior to the escape for allegedly raping a teen-age relative and assaulting a 60-year-old disabled woman during several incidents from 2004 to 2006 in Swansea, Nantucket and Rhode Island.

He is charged with rape, indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or over, assault and battery on a disabled person over 60, statutory rape of a child, enticing a child under 16, incest and indecent exposure.

Yeah...I know what you mean, it is sad when the victim of the crimes have less rights than the creeps once they get arrested. Then once they are in prison they get out without the victims getting notification that they are back on the streets. Time to change the system. Take away all the prisoners rights and those weight rooms that they have. They should stop paying for some to have sex change operations. Sure, let them get a GED but stop the college educations. Give them books to read and take away the TV's. Most prisoners have it made in there.... I went to school with a guy who shot and killed someone then went to prison, got out and because he loved it in prison shot and killed another guy to get back in. He couldn't make it on the outside because he had everything he needed in there.

i think the system is disgusting with the way they cater to these dirtbags. i have to keep telling people that the real victims are the ones who have been beaten, raped, tortured and/or killed, not the assholes that did it. & i don't care what kind of background the assholes had, if they had pms, ppd, adhd, ocd or if god talked to them. but maybe we'll get lucky & this asshole will head north. if he should make the mistake of coming to my house & the dogs don't get him, my glock sure the hell will!

I hope this court officer is reprimanded with more than "paid suspension pending investigation"

Anthony Flye, found guilty of raping a child, was sentenced to 15 years in prison followed by 20 years of probation.

A Superior Court jury returned Tuesday with the guilty verdict against Flye, 40, formerly of Nantucket, accepting the charge that Flye cultivated a relationship with a family in Swansea beginning in 2003 and used that relationship to rape.

The same jury found Flye innocent of charges that he raped and assaulted the grandmother of the child involved.

This verdict is just the beginning of Flye’s troubles.

He still faces charges of escape for 13 days he spent running from the law after he slipped away from a court officer on March 25, 2008.

Flye also faces charges of child molestation in Rhode Island.

Two Swansea women went to the police early in 2007 to accuse Flye of raping them both. Flye had taken on a dominant role in their family and spent time every month, visiting from his home in Nantucket.

The case was investigated by Officer Peter Robidoux and Detective Joseph Martin, Swansea’s sex crimes unit, and Flye was arrested in his million dollar home on Nantucket on Feb. 14, 2008.
    [...]

Flye will face escape charges in another trial that has not yet been scheduled. The matter came up when Flye took the stand in his own defense.

He did not call it an escape, referring to it as “the balcony incident” during his testimony. He declared from the stand that he escaped from custody because he wanted to make sure that construction equipment he had at various sites in Nantucket was collected, stored and sold.

Because Flye chose to take the stand in his own defense, Prosecutor Silvia Rudman was able to question Flye about the escape. She was also able to inform the jury that Flye had an extensive criminal record and that he has served time in prison before 2003.
