Athens Police arrested Jason Earl Appleton, 32, of 1514 Brownsferry St. Thursday night in connection with the assault, said Capt. Marty Bruce.
"The 35-year-old victim was invited to 716 Swan Drive to see his ex-girlfriend," Bruce said. "When he entered the apartment, his ex-girlfriend locked the door," Appleton came out of a closet with a baseball bat and struck the victim 21 times before the victim could get the door unlocked and get back to his vehicle. Appleton struck the victim several more times as the victim was getting into his vehicle."
Appleton was transferred to the Limestone County Jail.
No bond has been set.

The alleged beating took place on Swan Drive, where the victim had been called to come see his ex-girlfriend.
Appleton is accused of coming out of a closet with a baseball bat when the victim entered the woman's apartment, then chasing him from the home while repeatedly striking him.
