Students sent home over anti-Islamic "Devil' shirts

GAINESVILLE - A school district lawyer says a handful of students have been sent home from Alachua County schools this week because the shirts they wore might have offended or distracted other pupils or disrupted the learning process.

School district staff attorney Tom Wittmer says the shirts that read "Islam is of the Devil" violated the district's dress code.

The shirts are connected to a local church called the Dove World Outreach Center. A church member told The Gainesville Sun that he ordered them online.

The congregation says a 10-year-old elementary school student was sent home Monday because of the shirt. Three high school students were sent home Tuesday and a middle school student also had to change clothes.

What if they were required to get that tattooed or carved onto their foreheads... I bet they'd do it! The self-righteous are the most ignorant of mankind.

I wonder how the church that handed out the t-shirts would feel if other students came in wearing, "Christianity is of the Devil" shirts handed out by a local mosque. I'm usually all for free speech, but in this case, I think the district did the right thing.

Uniforms would really avoid this whole issue. My son had a uniform policy at his school....now they changed it and it seems like more of a competition.

Certain attire also sparks fights.....certain colors...may be gang related...who knows.....I vote uniforms. Not just a "dress code". Just my humble opinion.
