Jamie Lee Wilson Pleads Guilty in Scalding Death of 2-Year-Old

Hillsborough, N.C. — Jamie Lee Wilson, 23 pleaded guilty to a lesser murder charge Thursday, avoiding a possible life sentence, which means she will get 31.8 to 40.5 years in prison on charges of felonious child abuse, first-degree kidnapping, and second-degree murder in connection with the Dec. 20, 2005, death of 2-year-old Briana Faucette. Wilson was babysitting Briana for her friend.

Authorities said Briana might have suffered for hours and died as a result of second- and third-degree burns on more than 40% of her body, including the back of her legs and knees. According to an autopsy report, it appeared as though she had curled up in a ball while being dipped in hot water.

Wilson waited hours before calling 911 and told a dispatcher she awoke from a nap to find the child lying dead on the floor. She told investigators she spilled boiling water on the floor and that Briana sat in it.

A mistake committed in anger turned into murder because Wilson did not seek medical attention for Briana but instead let her fall asleep on the floor while she was going into shock, Orange-Chatham District Attorney James Woodall said.

Medical examiners found not only bruises on her face and arms but also skin and hair missing from her body, along with cockroach bites and dog hair from lying on the floor.

Doctors told prosecutors Briana could have suffered from shock for about six hours before she died. Wilson called 911 about 12 hours after the scalding, and only at the advice of her father, one of several people she called that morning asking what to do.

Investigators found a clump of about 1,000 hairs from Briana's head in a trash can, and Taber said Wilson probably pulled the girl by the hair before or after the scalding.

Taber said Wilson hid various injuries with a clean diaper and clothing.

"The defendant had actually pulled the child's hair back in a ponytail to cover up the missing hair," she said.

The reason for all this? The girl vomited and soiled her diaper in the middle of the night.
