Lockerbie Bomber Goes Home To Die

    Homecoming for Lockerbie Bomber

The Libyan man jailed in Scotland for blowing up a US airliner over Lockerbie in 1988 has returned to his home in Libya after being set free.

The Scottish government released Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, who is 57 and has terminal cancer, on compassionate grounds.

US President Barack Obama said the move was "a mistake", and some relatives of US victims reacted angrily.

Most of the 270 people who died in the bombing were Americans.

In a radio interview, Mr Obama said: "We have been in contact with the Scottish government, indicating that we objected to this. We thought it was a mistake."

He added that his administration had told the Libyan government that Megrahi should not receive a hero's welcome and should be placed under house arrest.

In London, a spokesman for the Foreign Office said any decision to release Megrahi "was for the Scottish government and ministers to take, as they have done".

Correspondents say the Libyan authorities will regard his release as a triumph.

Hundreds of people waved Libyan and Scottish flags as his plane landed at Tripoli airport at 1830 GMT.

Within minutes Megrahi was whisked away for a meeting with his elderly mother, the BBC's Christian Fraser reports from the scene.

    Compassion

It was a jet owned by leader Col Muammar Gaddafi that carried Megrahi back to Libya after his release on Thursday from Scotland's Greenock Prison.

On arrival, he appeared beside the Libyan leader's son, Seif al-Islam Gaddafi, who described his release as a courageous step by the British and Scottish governments.

Local media reports said Megrahi would probably meet Col Gaddafi on Friday.

The Scottish government said it had consulted widely before Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill made his decision on applications for Megrahi's compassionate release or his transfer to a Libyan jail.

Mr MacAskill told a news conference he had rejected the application for a prisoner transfer.

However, after taking medical advice it was expected that three months was a "reasonable estimate" of the time Megrahi had left to live.

He said that fact that Megrahi's victims were shown no compassion was "not a reason for us to deny compassion to him and his family in his final days".

In a statement released after his departure from HMP Greenock, Megrahi continued to protest his innocence, saying his final days were "being lived under the shadow of the wrongness of my conviction".

"I have been faced with an appalling choice: to risk dying in prison in the hope that my name is cleared posthumously or to return home still carrying the weight of the guilty verdict, which will never now be lifted."

    'No remorse'

Megrahi's return was welcomed in Libya.

"This person is innocent, thank God he's coming home. This is a cheerful day for the whole Libyan people," one man in Tripoli said.

But the families of American victims of the Lockerbie bombing reacted angrily to the news.

Kara Weipz, of Mt Laurel, New Jersey, who lost her brother Richard Monetti, said: "It is an utter insult and utterly disgusting... I don't show compassion for someone who showed no remorse."

New York state resident Paul Halsch, whose 31-year-old wife was killed, said of Mr MacAskill's decision: "This might sound crude or blunt, but I want him returned from Scotland the same way my wife Lorraine was and that would be in a box."

However, British relatives' spokesman Dr Jim Swire, who lost his daughter Flora in the atrocity, reiterated his view that Megrahi had "nothing to do with" the bombing.

"I don't believe for a moment that this man was involved in the way that he was found to have been involved," he said.

Megrahi was convicted of murder in January 2001 at a trial held under Scottish law in the Netherlands.

Compassion?? He showed no one compassion. Compassion was shown to him when his sorry ass was not executed. Bastard, I wonder how many more will die before the grim reaper comes for him.

My guess -- bottom line, was cheaper to send him home, than giving him ongoing medical treatment.

That is what I thought since he is dying anyway, and the America as you mentioned, is his #1 target, he might just take some Americans with him. I hope we are wrong.

I agree with everything each of you has said. I hate that he is out. It would be nice if he was chained to his bed or something.

A sentence of "life in prison"... does that mean you will die in prison, of SOMETHING? Everyone dies of something, so why should prostate cancer make you eligible for an early out? I guess it would be OK for him to die of a heart ailment, or to have another prisoner beat his brains out? But cancer? Oh the poor guy, let's send him home. I bet he has a miraculous recovery, and the UK can swim in oil. Thanks Libya, and you too Scot-free-land!!!!!!!!

Fuck 'compassionate grounds'!! This murdering bastard should have been left to DIE in prison.

Releasing him was a huge mistake, and a massive insult to the victims and their families.

Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, who is suffering from terminal prostate cancer, no longer receives hospital treatment after ending the course of chemotherapy that he had been given after returning to his homeland last August.

Professor Karol Sikora, the London-based doctor who examined Megrahi and predicted he would be dead by last October, admitted this weekend that the fact the bomber is still alive might be "difficult" for the families of the 270 victims of the attack.

The latest disclosure will incense many of the relatives of those who died in the bomb blast in December 1988 when Pan Am Flight 103 exploded in mid air over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 243 passengers, 16 crew and 11 people on the ground.

Most did not want Megrahi released and they suspected he would live longer than the predicted three months.

The Sunday Telegraph revealed last September that the Libyan government had paid for the medical evidence which helped Megrahi, 57, to be released. The Libyans had encouraged doctors to say he had only three months to live.

The life expectancy of Megrahi was crucial because, under Scottish rules, prisoners can be freed on compassionate grounds only if they are considered to have this amount of time, or less, to live.

Kenny MacAskill, the Scottish Justice Secretary, ruled last August that Megrahi should be freed. Megrahi's release came after Libyan leaders warned that lucrative oil and trade deals with Britain would be cancelled if the bomber died in jail.

One leading prostate cancer specialist cast serious doubt yesterday on the wisdom of predicting that Megrahi had only three months to live – when a patient still had to undergo chemotherapy. Dr Chris Parker said it was extremely difficult to give an accurate prognosis for individual patients. "Studies show experts are very poor at trying to predict how long an individual patient will live for," he warned.

Megrahi received the chemotherapy drug Docetaxel – trade name Taxotere – shortly after returning to Libya.

Dr Parker, who is with the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden Hospital, said: "The average prognosis for survival after Docetaxel would be 12 months.

"It can vary enormously but it would be very unusual to live beyond two years."

Doctors in Libya supply monthly medical reports to Scottish authorities who can speak to Megrahi whenever they want. The conditions of his early release stipulate he must not leave Libya.

Megrahi, is now living in a spacious two-storey villa with his wife and their five grown-up children in a prosperous suburb of Tripoli, the Libyan capital.

The property has a spacious garden and an area where the family erects a large tent to entertain visitors for celebrations.

    Still not dead.
The health of the freed Lockerbie bomber has 'greatly improved' now he is home in Libya, Colonel Gaddafi's son boasted yesterday.
    [...]

In words which will confirm the suspicions of Lockerbie victims' families, Saif Gaddafi - widely tipped to succeed his father as Libyan leader - also finally admitted that the convicted killer's release had dominated trade talks with Britain.

This would have included discussions about lucrative oil deals, despite the fact that Megrahi was officially released purely on compassionate grounds. Five months after the release, Libya announced plans to invest £5billion in the UK.

Megrahi, 57, has acquired national hero status in Libya, with babies named after him and an extraordinary 30,000 well-wishers reported to have visited his 'death bed'. Queues of pilgrims form outside the sumptuous villa in Tripoli where he remains with his family despite doctors' predictions that he would be dead by Christmas.
    [...]

Megrahi, who completed a course of chemotherapy in December, is usually seen propped up in bed. Groups of well-wishers are allowed in half-a-dozen at a time to spend a few minutes with him.

His eldest brother, Mohammed Ali, said: 'The public response is not a political one, but a show of support for someone who is much loved.

'My brother sacrificed ten years of his life to assist in the lifting of the economic blockade against Libya.'

Some relatives of victims of the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 suspect Megrahi was never as sick as he claimed to be. They believe it was an unforgivable mistake to release the convicted terrorist.

Days after dropping an appeal against his conviction for the 270 deaths caused when Flight 103 exploded over Lockerbie, Megrahi flew home to a hero's welcome.

It later emerged that he had £2million stashed in a Swiss bank account before his conviction.

The Lockerbie bomber celebrated his 58th birthday on Thursday at a Libyan mansion, defying the imminent death Scottish officials predicted when they compassionately freed him from prison nearly eight months ago.
The thought of Abdelbaset Al-Megrahi partying with family and friends - reportedly thanking God for his survival - left his victims' loved ones sick to their stomachs.
"Since returning to the love of family and friends, he has made a remarkable recovery," a diplomatic source told the (London) Daily Mail.
Last week, Megrahi blocked the public release of his medical records.

So... is there no point where they decide to toss him back into jail because he is healthy enough? At least for the time being? And why the hell does he get to wear a mask? Let him get germs. Fucker. I just shouldn't return to this thread. It gets my blood pressure all up.

I thought my original post would be "end of story" until his death.

Lockerbie convicted bomber released due to cancer. Stll alive

    This is just gross

Perhaps the expert's should have gotten another opinion.

Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Al-Megrahi remains alive and well in Libya nearly a year after his early release and months after several doctors said the cancer-stricken terrorist was supposed to have died.

Now one of those same doctors claims Megrahi could potentially live another decade.

"There was always a chance he could live for ten years, 20 years... But it's very unusual," cancer specialist Professor Sikora told London's Sunday Times.

Megrahi is the only terrorist to be convicted in the 1988 Pan Am Flight 103 bombing that killed 270 over Lockerbie, Scotland. He was given a life sentence, but received an early release in August for "compassionate" reasons because doctors concluded he would be dead within three months from terminal prostate cancer.

The terrorist received a hero's welcome when he returned to Libya after his release in August, and since has reportedly been on the mend. Although he was required to keep Scottish doctors apprised of his health after his release, his lawyers have kept his medical records sealed.

"There was a 50 per cent chance that he would die in three months," Sikora said. "But there was also a 50 per cent chance that he would live longer."

Megrahi's continued health has caused outrage among the families of those who died in 1988, many of whom were angry he had been let go at all.

It was reported last year that Megrahi's release had little to do with his health, but was tied to political dealings related to the oil trade between the United Kingdom and Libya.

The Scottish government has reaffirmed its release of Megrahi was based upon his "terminal" cancer.

"He was released on compassionate grounds," the statement said, "and allowed home to die based on the medical report of the Scottish Prison Service Director of Health and the recommendations of the Parole Board and Prison Governor."

I seriously cannot imagine that when it comes to the person who exploded a plane that had more than 200 people (children included) aboard.

Wow sorry, got carried away with how I think he should die.
Here's the thing...the man is a terrorist. He's admitted to it and for those of us alive when it happened, we saw the result of what he did.
He was let out of prison because '3 months to live' blah blah which I think is bullshit to begin with. To go for the emotional angle, the people who boarded that plane weren't told they had 3 months to live.
He was given a respite and has outlived it.
Put his ass back behind bars

This fellow I do care about, as he made sure to see fit that 270 lives were ended that day, countless families destroyed in the process.
Again, 2 horses. Tie him up between them and shoot a gun into the air. Let's see how he likes being ripped apart.

    We all make choices Pete.
He decided on the one that ended the lives of 270 people.
Fairly certain that any of us who follow the news are aware of Quadaffi and his politics.

With every action there is an equal reaction. Zero tolerance for terrorists seems to be a good policy.
Anyone who isn't for the death penalty for this asshole is someone I wouldn't care to know.
    Just being honest.

Fairly certain that any of us who follow the news are aware of Quadaffi and his politics.

With every action there is an equal reaction.
Anyone who isn't for the death penalty for this asshole is someone I wouldn't care to know.
    Just being honest.
Oh...yes...I agree that the Arab should never have been released. The U.S. should have insisted on his extradition, so he could have been imprisoned herein. This matter is disgusting. The Scottish official who released this bastard should suffer also.
Yet know, my master, God omnipotent,
Is mustering in his clouds on our behalf
Armies of pestilence; and they shall strike
Your children yet unborn and unbegot,
That lift your vassal hands against my head
And threat the glory of my precious crown.

Disagree. MacAskill should suffer because of his horrendous decision-making skills, but the bomber is the one that needs to suffer the most. By far.

It's like having a real Nazi who was in charge of a death camp and a stupid neo-Nazi skinhead from some redneck US town who just pissed on the graves of local Jews- both need to be punished, but there's no way that the disrespecting asshole deserves MORE punishment than the original perpetrator.

I expect Mr. MacAskill to know better.

The US (and I believe Germany, though I don't know if they actually had citizens on that flight) didn't directly demand his extradition, but issued fairly strongly-worded warnings against and rebuffs of the Scottish justice system before and after this happened. Yeah, yeah, they're just words, but politics is a lot of just words- after all, just words are what got MacAskill to release the fucker.
