Parachute Found In Clark County Could Belong To D.B. Cooper
    POSTED: 10:57 am PDT March 25, 2008
    UPDATED: 11:12 am PDT March 26, 2008

AMBOY, Wash. -- A parachute that could belong to famous hijacker D.B. Cooper has been found and is being analyzed by the FBI in Seattle.

The Cooper case has been surrounded by mystery since 1971, when he jumped from a Northwest Orient Airlines Boeing 727 with a bag of money containing $200,000 ransom.

The parachute, which the FBI said is the same type that was used by Cooper, was found between the Clark County towns of Ariel and Amboy, near the center of the original jump zone, according to KOIN News 6.

The parachute was unearthed in a field that was being plowed by the property owner and was found by the man’s children while they were playing. The children pulled the cloth until the chute’s shroud lines appeared and their father recognized it as a parachute.

The man notified the FBI in Seattle. Part of the chute, which is white and conical shaped, remains buried in the field.

Seattle Agent Larry Carr said he will analyze the parachute and look for a label, which could match it to a reserve chute left behind by Cooper on the plane.

    Cool! :D

Edit: Now I've got Culture Club stuck in my head. Significantly less cool.

Hey, keep us posted, please! This is one of the first 'true crime' cases I ever took an interest in, back when I was a wee child, and dinosaurs roamed the earth! Teehee!

Over the years, many 'findings' have been suspected of being the evidence of D.B.'s survival (or demise, depending on 'evidence' located). At different times, individuals have claimed to have found his bones, his chute, the missing money (which was marked I believe), and various other items they attributed to D.B. As far as I know, none have ever been conclusively proven to have anything to do with him or the hijacking. It would interest me to find out if indeed they now have conclusive proof of his escape (or death). Thanks for the walk down memory lane, regardless how it turns out.:ange:

Me too Angel. I've read and heard about D.B. Cooper all my life and it is very fascinating. I would definitely like to know more. Conclusive info that is.

    Absolutely!
The D.B. Cooper case is so cool because we don't know what happened. Personally, I hope he's alive and well, living on a beach in Mexico or somewhere.
I seem to remember a kid finding a bundle of money in a stream that they thought might have been part of his loot.

Here is my question.... I totally understand the fact that they're plowing a field and found an old parachute. But at what point in unearthing the damn thing did the guy think I be the FBI would like to know about this.

Seriously. I'd have just thrown it away.

Kyle, if you're digging a hole and find a Parachute you would have absolutely no reason to call the FBI... Because you live in IOWA! But if you live in the area where one of the most legendary crimes and escapes by Parachute of all time happened and you're digging a hole and find a Parachute you might think "Hey, this might be D.B. Coppers' Parachute"! :D

Well, Kyle, because this case is fairly high-profile, local authorities occasionally run publicity campaigns about it. Apparently, one such campaign was being run recently, and the man's kids implored their father to contact authorities about the find.

    Damn.

Expert: Chute wasn't from D.B. Cooper
    1 hour, 1 minute ago

VANCOUVER, Wash. - A recently discovered parachute could not have been used by D.B. Cooper in 1971, says the man who packed the four chutes that were given to the mysterious skyjacker.

The torn, tangled parachute — found about a month ago by children along a dirt road near Amboy — was probably made around 1945, said Earl Cossey, who examined the chute for the FBI on Friday.

The FBI said the matter remained under investigation.
