A 20-year-old robbery suspect allegedly told Des Moines police Monday that he was under the impression if he made it out of a store after stealing something they couldn't do anything about it.

Officers told Herman McRae, 20, that he was misinformed. They charged him with second-degree robbery of the Hy-Vee Food Store.

A loss prevention employee told officers that a man was caught shoplifting shortly before 6 p.m., and that he fought his way out of the store. He last was seen fleeing from an employee.

The suspect lost a shirt and his cell phone during the escape. When officers began their investigation they were told that a group of people may have been with the suspect. An officer approached them but they denied knowing anything about him.

Then the cell phone rang. An officer flipped open the phone and there was a picture on the phone of a woman standing in front of the officer. The officer asked again if she knew him.

The woman finally admitted that she knew him. She told police her address was 1603 E. Pleasant View Dr. She said she "guaranteed he won't be there."

Police went to 1603 E. Pleasant View Dr., and arrested Herman McRae.
