OCOEE, Fla., Aug. 5 (UPI) -- A bone found Wednesday during the renewed search for a missing woman in Ocoee, Fla., was an animal bone, a source told the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel.

The Florida newspaper said the bone was discovered by searchers Wednesday morning, but its discovery did not prompt the surrounding area to be taped off by authorities.

Tracy Ocasio, 27, has been missing since May 27. She was last seen leaving a bar on the night of her disappearance with 28-year-old James Hataway.

Hataway, who remains investigators' lone person of interest in the disappearance, maintains he drove Ocasio home on May 27 and then left.

The renewed search for Ocasio came about after an unidentified tipster informed police recently that he saw Ocasio's car the night of her disappearance.

The Sentinel said Ocasio's car, which the tipster reportedly saw on the wrong side of the road, was later found abandoned near Hataway's home.

"Hopefully they will find her today. I'm so ready for that," Ocasio's mother Liz said of Wednesday's search. "You're never ready to find your daughter deceased, but I'm really ready for this chapter to be over."

Darling girls. Do not go to a bar, get smashed, and then leave with random dude. I am not saying she deserved this, but that just isn't smart. This is what happens.

    Damn it.

This was on the news last night. There's another girl, also pretty and blonde, who disappeared a few years ago, from an area near here. Jennifer Kesse. Wondering if it's the same guy responsible.

They showed some video last night Gidg. The video was three years old and it was what the parents of that older missing girl case believe to be the same guy around where their daughter was.

An increase in the reward money for any information that leads to the whereabouts of Tracy Ocasio, the Ocoee woman missing since May 26th...

"We did go down to the police headquarters in Orlando - which is where the Crimeline is located. And we actually increased the reward money from $5000 to $10,000."

Tracy's mother Elizabeth says the police continue to actively run down any leads that they get.

Meanwhile, the last person to see Tracy alive, James Hataway, remains in jail on charges for attacking a woman in Seminole County. He has yet to talk about anything relating to Tracy.

Jeepers Creepers! Looks like James Hataway is one bad dude:
Ocoee police have linked a total of six possible victims to James Hataway, including Ocasio.

The sixth alleged victim came forward Wednesday and told investigators she had been roughed up by him.

"This Jimmy has a preponderance to do violence, he snaps, he gets angry, it's always a woman, ride home, end up alone," said Sgt. Mike Bryant, Ocoee Police Department.
    [...]

As days go by and more of James Hataway's past comes out, Ocasio's parents are in disbelief that he was ever on the streets.

"Incredible that he's involved in so many suspicious disappearances," said Joe Ocasio, Tracy's Father.
    [...]

Eyewitness News learned more about James Hataway. The 28-year-old lived with his father in Ocoee. He also worked with his father dredging ponds.

From 1993 to 1998, Hataway was in and out of juvenile hall. He has an extensive record of drugs, DUI and traffic violations.
    [...]

As more people hear about the case, it's becoming an eerie game of six degrees of separation and James Hataway is in the middle.

Eyewitness News learned that Hataway was one of two people, who last saw a missing Apopka man.

Wednesday night, Apopka police picked up Tyler Watters. Watters is a friend of Hataway and someone who they believe may have information about the disappearance of the Apopka man.

Moneys been upped again top $20,000.00Hope endures, reward rises for missing woman
    (CNN) --
As Tracy Ocasio's 28th birthday came and went last week, her mother remained hopeful that she would soon get answers about the young Florida woman's disappearance nearly three months ago.

Tracy Ocasio disappeared after watching a ball game with friends at an Orlando, Florida, sports bar.
Police have a person of interest in custody on unrelated charges, but they still don't have the full story, said Detective Mark Olson of the Ocoee Police Department near Orlando.

In honor of Ocasio's birthday, her family increased the reward for information on her disappearance to $20,000.

Elizabeth Ocasio said she last spoke with her daughter about 8:30 p.m. May 26. Tracy Ocasio said she planned to come home that night after watching a televised basketball game with friends at the Florida Tap Room, a popular sports bar in Orlando.

When Ocasio didn't come home that night, her mother said she assumed she'd decided to stay at a friend's house. She often stayed with the friend when she was too tired to drive home.

At 6:30 the next morning, Elizabeth Ocasio sent a text message to her daughter: "Where are you?" She did not receive a response, she said, so she called her daughter's cell phone again two hours later. The phone rang a few times and then went to voice mail. She tried calling Ocasio several more times that day, and each time, the call went to voice mail.

"I was worried, but I still did not imagine that anything terrible could have happened," Elizabeth Ocasio said.

Panic set in when she received a call from police on the afternoon of May 27. They'd found Tracy Ocasio's car in a rundown neighborhood three miles from the Ocasio home. The car was parked on private property, and the residents had called to have it towed.

"When I got there, I knew something didn't make sense. Tracy would never go to such a neighborhood by herself," Elizabeth Ocasio told CNN. She found her daughter's purse in the car, but her ID, cell phone and car keys were missing.

By 7 p.m., Tracy Ocasio was officially reported missing and a county-wide search was under way. It lasted for weeks. "We searched bodies of water and heavily wooded areas," Olson said, "and we continue to search based on tips we receive."

The investigation led detectives to James Hataway, 28, who is considered a person of interest because a Tap Room surveillance video shows him leaving the bar with Tracy Ocasio, Olson said. A spokesman said the Orange County Public Defender's Office would have no comment.

Police questioned Hataway for 11 hours over two days. He told investigators that Ocasio had given him a ride home from the bar that night, Olson said.

Hataway told police that he didn't see Ocasio after she dropped him off. His home was just 200 yards from where Ocasio's car was found, police said. During questioning, Hataway took a polygraph test, which police said showed some discrepancies, Olson said.

Police brought bloodhounds to where Ocasio's car was found, but the dogs didn't hit on her scent, leading police to believe she wasn't the one who parked her car there. Police also say no forensic evidence was found to suggest Ocasio was injured or killed inside her car.

Police are holding Hataway on unrelated charges at the Orange County Jail. He is charged with aggravated battery, robbery and false imprisonment stemming from an incident in neighboring Seminole County in August 2008.

A young woman said she gave him a ride home one night. She said he attacked her and tried to break her neck, but she fought back. She'd reported the assault when it happened but only later were police able to identify Hataway as the alleged assailant. Hataway remains in custody on those charges with bail set at $250,000. He has not pled.

Shortly after his interrogation in the Ocasio case, the public defender's office took Hataway's case, and he stopped talking.

Hataway has not been named a suspect and has not been charged in the Ocasio case.

Police and family urge anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the person responsible for Ocasio's disappearance to call the tip line at 1-800-423-TIPS. A $20,000 reward is offered.

Boot Found In Woods Could Belong To Missing Woman
    Posted: 7:04 am EDT August 27, 2009
    Updated: 11:45 am EDT August 27, 2009

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- A boot could be a new lead in the case of an Ocoee woman missing for three months. Wednesday night, investigators told Eyewitness News they found one boot in some woods in Ocoee two days ago that they believe belongs to Tracy Ocasio (see the boot).

Ocasio went missing three months ago. Police say the last person to see her was James Hataway. He is still being held in jail on unrelated charges.

"We have recently found a boot. The boot was found in the wood line after a recent search," said Sgt. Mike Bryant, Ocoee Police Department.

Orange County deputies on horseback were conducting routine training near Highway 50 and Bluford Avenue (see map) in Orange County when they stumbled across the boot.

"The boot was shown to the Ocasio family, who distributed [pictures] to her friends, asking, 'hey, did Tracy ever have a boot like this?,' and one of the friends said, 'yes.'" explained Sgt. Bryant.

Beginning Thursday, Florida Department of Law Enforcement laboratory investigators will spend a couple of days analyzing the boot found in the woods. They plan on testing the boot for DNA evidence that could link it to Ocasio.

On Wednesday night, police received a Crimeline tip that a body might be inside a freezer on an abandoned property off Avalon Road in west Orange County. However, when investigators searched it, all they found were animal bones in some bags (read report). The abandoned property was an animal farm where people would drop off their dying pets but it has not been in business for two years.

ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35. Orlando) - Search crews hit the ground running Saturday for two of Florida’s missing people.

A team of specialized search and rescue volunteers were in Ocoee this weekend looking for clues into the disappearance of Tracy Ocasio. The 27-year-old woman went missing in May after leaving the Tap Room bar in Metrowest with James Hataway, a person of interest in her disappearance.

The Florida-3 Airboat Search and Rescue group is made up of trained search and rescue personnel. The group recently conducted a dual search for both Tracy Ocasio and Jennifer Kesse, who has been missing since 2006 from her condo near the Mall at Millenia.

Earlier this week, Ocoee Police revealed they found a black boot in the wood that they think might have belonged to Ocasio.

Police Continue To Search For Missing 27-Year-Old
    POSTED: 12:08 pm EDT August 31, 2009
    UPDATED: 4:25 pm EDT August 31, 2009

OCOEE, Fla. -- Hopes for closure for the parents of missing woman Tracy Ocasio were dashed Monday when authorities said a boot found in a wooded area was inconclusive in the search for the 27-year-old.
The Ocoee Police Department and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said that samples from the boot leg, the inside of the boot and outside of the boot were taken but "failed to demonstrate the presence of amplifiable DNA," according to a news release. The boot did not contain enough measurable DNA to conclude whether it belonged to Ocasio.

The wooded area near Lake Bennett was searched again over the weekend using air boats, dogs and a six-wheel water vehicle known as a HydroCheck. The searched turned up no sign of Ocasio, who was last seen on May 27 leaving the Tap Room Bar in MetroWest with the only person of interest in the case, James Hataway.

Ocasio's family and friends hung high hopes on the boot and its ability to provide clues into her disappearance.

Ocasio's best friend said last week that she was 99 percent sure the boot belonged to Ocasio's.

"We've had a lot of highs and lows, so we'll just have to wait and see," father Joe Ocasio said last week.

"I just want God to lead us to a place where we can find her, where she is so that we can get the closer that we need for her at least," mother Liz Ocasio said.

CrimeLine is offering up to a $20,000 reward for information in the case

When Hataway was brought in for questioning, "he accused an acquaintance of his to have been responsible for her disappearance,'' according to an e-mail late Monday from Joe Ocasio.

The acquaintance was Paul Hutto, who has been checked out and cleared by police, Joe Ocasio said.
    [...]

"Hataway basically told the cops during questioning that Paul Hutto had called him the morning Tracy disappeared and told him that if the police would come to him asking about Tracy that he was to tell them he did not see Tracy the night before or knew her,'' Ocasio wrote.

After learning that police were going to issue a warrant for Hataway's phone records, Hataway "changed his story and instead claimed Paul Hutto came to his house the morning she disappeared around 11:00 AM and again told him he better not tell the police about Tracy."

The e-mail notes that Hutto was questioned and he had "a solid alibi" of his whereabouts for the morning Hataway claimed Paul came over.

"It appears Paul had car trouble and had witnesses and receipts putting him in another place when Hataway claimed he came to his house," the email said.

Hutto also helped police by showing them "where they would dump debris and other wooded areas where Hataway was known to either dump debris or hang out,'' Joe Ocasio wrote.

The alleged conflicting statements from Hataway, along with other details, including video showing Tracy Ocasio and Hataway at the bar together and the fact Tracy Ocasio's yellow Chevrolet Cobalt was found unlocked and abandoned just blocks from Hataway's house in Ocoee, "makes us believe he either has harmed our daughter or knows about what happened to her,'' Joe Ocasio wrote.

i am not up on my Florida geography; is this county swampland? dumping bodies in swamps, bayous or coulees is a time-honored means of body disposal in swamp country. sounds like the cops know he did it, the parents know he did it, his friends know he did it and HE damn sure knows he did it, but without evidence or a witness it will be extremely difficult to bring him to trial. just knowing someone did something is not sufficient to overcome reasonable doubt. i think he's a murdering piece of shit.

James Hataway is under constant video surveillance at the Orange County Jail after officials learned he complained about conditions in the facility and expressed concerns of retribution for his comments.

"He has been moved to a location where he can be better observed," jail spokesman Allen Moore said. "He has been put in a location where it can be documented should anything inappropriate occur."

The move came after the Orlando Sentinel shared jail "inmate request forms" that Hataway apparently mailed to the newspaper with officials at the correctional facility.

The six-page letter sent to the Sentinel is critical of conditions at the Orange County Jail and takes issue with the inmate grievance process at the sprawling correctional complex.
    [...]

Moore said jail officials are looking into Hataway's complaints to see if they are credible. The individuals cited in Hataway's request forms and letters work late shifts and could not immediately be reached, he said.
    [...]

Hataway's letter does not refer specifically to the Ocasio case and gives no hints about the woman's disappearance. However, he takes an opportunity to mention his rights and defend himself.

"Now I know the media has portrayed me in a very negative light, but I would like to remind everyone that I am presumed innocent until proven guilty, and as far as I know I am still an American citizen and I still have rights," his letter says.

The letter goes on to say that he does not expect a reporter to solve "my petty squabble," but simply wants people to be aware what is going on.

He also referred to a quote saying, "A nation is judged by how well it treats its prisoners."

I really hope her family gets some closure. They deserve that at least.

The search resumes this weekend for missing Ocoee woman Tracy Ocasio.

The 29-year-old hasn't been seen since May 2009 when she was seen leaving a MetroWest bar.
    [...]

There have been numerous searches for Ocasio, but none have turned up any major clues in the case.

The search was prompted by the drug arrest of an associate of Hataway who told police where to look for bodies.

A second potential victim is thought to be Chris George, who also knew Hataway.

"From the area where Chris was last seen to area where we are searching is not that far,” said Joe Ocasio, Tracey’s father. “And it’s an area where Hataway was known to hang out."

"I feel like Joe does. These two cases are connected and advances in one lead to advances in the other," said Rachael George, Chris’ mother.

Human skull found after search teams drain Lake Carter

    APOPKA --
Officials said they have found a "significant" amount of human bones at Lake Carter, just east of State Road 429.

The remains include a human skull and a bone that appears to be from a man's body.

Crews started draining the lake Tuesday, and continued overnight and into Wednesday morning, hoping to find more clues.

Investigators said they believe the remains could belong to Onda Christopher George, who has been missing for two years, but they could not say for sure yet.

Detectives first found a human bone Monday night in the same area where George's car was found in February 2009

Tests results on the bone should determine whether the bone belongs to one of two people missing from Orange County for about two years:

Onda Christopher George, of Apopka, has been missing since Feb. 12, 2009. He was 29 at the time.
Tracy Ocasio, of Ocoee, has been missing since May 26, 2009. She was 27 at the time.
The two disappearances were 15 weeks apart, but investigators said they believe both George and Ocasio were last seen with the same man: James Hataway.

    Timeline of disappearances
Feb. 11, 2009 -- Onda Christopher George disappeared. Investigators say they believe he was last seen with James Hataway.

May 26, 2009 -- Tracy Ocasio disappeared after she was seen leaving the Tap Room on Raleigh Street, in Orlando, with James Hataway.

May 27, 2009 -- Tracy Ocasio's car was found in Ocoee.

June 1, 2009 -- Investigators named James Hataway a person of interest in Ocasio's disappearance, identifying him as the last person seen with Ocasio. Hataway was arrested on unrelated drug paraphernalia charges at his Ocoee home.

June 2, 2009 -- An anonymous woman came forward, claiming James Hataway tried to kill her less than a year earlier after she gave him a ride home. Hataway was denied bond on drug charges.

June 3, 2009 -- A $5,000 reward was offered for information regarding Tracy Ocasio's disappearance. Apopka police said James Hataway is also connected to Christopher George's disappearance.

June 5, 2009 -- Ocoee police released video of James Hataway and Tracy Ocasio leaving the Orlando Tap Room.

June 11, 2009 -- Police searched for clues in a wooded area where they said James Hataway used to visit and illegally dump debris he collected from a lakeside cleaning job.

June 12, 2009 -- Texas EquuSearch arrived in Central Florida to help look for Tracy Ocasio. James Hataway willingly provided a DNA sample to Ocoee police.

June 18, 2009 -- Ocoee police searched James Hataway's home, seizing two computers.

June 23, 2009 -- Ocoee police pumped a septic tank at James Hataway's home, but found nothing.

July 2, 2009 -- Ocoee police drain the septic tank at Hataway's former home on A.D. Mims Road, in Ocoee.

Aug. 21, 2009 -- Investigators found a boot believed to belong to Tracy Ocasio. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said investigators could not get any DNA samples off the boot.

Aug. 28, 2009 -- Bones were found at 5859 Avalon Road, but turned out to be animal bones.

Sept. 24, 2009 -- Hataway appeared in Seminole County court on charges that he tried to strangle another woman wh gave him a ride home. He waived his right to speedy trial.

Christopher George's license found with human remains at Lake Carter
    APOPKA --
Apopka police believe they've solved a missing persons case.

The remains found at the bottom of Lake Carter have not scientifically been identified.

All week speculation has centered around these remains being of Christopher George, who has been missing for two years.

Now police said they've also found some of his belongings.

For more than three days, investigators have been collecting bones from the now drained Lake Carter in Apopka.

Late Thursday afternoon, they told News 13 the significant amount of bones collected appeared to be of a man's and that they found more than just bones.

Also discovered was a wallet with a driver’s license, which is that of Christopher George.

Apopka Police Chief Robert Manley said they also found a cell phone and jewelry that appears to have belonged to George.
