DALLAS — Police said Tuesday they have a man in custody who may be responsible for a series of sex assaults on female motorists.

At a news conference Tuesday morning, police spokeswoman Senior Cpl. Janice Crowther said the man — identified as 26-year-old Omar Quiñonez — was taken into custody on Monday after officers observed him committing a traffic violation.

Inside his black pickup truck, investigators found a broken cell phone that belonged to one of Quiñonez' alleged victims.

"The suspect has been positively identified by one of the victims as the person who sexually assaulted her," Crowther said. "We hopefully will be charging him with the other sexual assault soon, and we will be looking into whether he has committed any other sexual assaults in the city."

The suspect targeted women by intentionally hitting their car with his vehicle. When the victims get out of their car to exchange information, he then forces them at knifepoint into his truck.

"This guy was an opportunist; he preyed on an opportunity to get a female and get her and sexually assault her," Crowther said. "But we would also like to commend the victims. It is very, very heart-wrenching what has happened to them — it is devastating. But they did something good, they did remember a lot of stuff. They got as much information as they could get, they passed that on to the police officers, and it is basically because of the information that we got from them that we caught him so fast."
