Police find seven children alone in house
SOUTH BEND — Police say they found
seven children, ranging in age from 1 to 11, left alone in a house Sunday night.
Police were called to the home in the 1100 block of East Calvert Street about 10:30 p.m. after a neighbor went to the home because she said she heard crying. The neighbor told police no adults were present and the kids were running all over the home.
Police arrived and talked to the children, with one reporting that a teenage baby-sitter, possibly
15-years-old, had been watching the family but had left.
Police tried to contact the
29-year-old mother, but could only reach two men, fathers of four of the children. Four children were placed in their fathers’ custody and the remaining three were placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.
Police reported being at the home for
several hours, but that the children’s mother did not arrive while they were there.
