Parents beat Terry Gibbs for molesting their kids, he has heart attack

A Newberry County man was severely beaten by the parents of three children who the man is accused of sexually molesting, and he was then dropped off at a detention center where he suffered a heart attack.

Officers said they saw the man, later identified as Terry Hugh Gibbs, 54, of Newberry, being put out of a vehicle at the Newberry County Detention Center on Sunday night. Gibbs told officers he had been beaten because he had sexually assaulted three children, all under 10 years old, to whom he is related.

Investigators learned that after one of the children told a relative about the alleged assault, the other children came forward. Gibbs was beaten by the parents of all three children.

Police said they have since learned a fourth child, also a relative of Gibbs, was also molested. Investigators said that there is no indication that any other children who were not related to Gibbs were molested.

No charges have been filed against the parents and I hope it stays that way!

That man told the officers that he had been beaten because he molested his grandchildren.

A short time later, the man who had two stints in his heart went into cardiac arrest and had to be transported to a Columbia area hospital for medical treatment. He is still hospitalized at this point; however, when he is released, authorities say he will face charges of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and lewd act on child for the sexual assault of not only the three children, but an additional child in the family who was identified after the investigation began.

At first I couldn't believe he'd do this to his own grandchildren, but then I realized that you have to be beyond sick to do it in the first place and the "who" really is not that important at that rate.

lol... Yes, I find the best part of the story somehow that they beat the shit out of him and then dropped him off at the police station. This fuckwad will be getting what he deserves both personally AND legally. *snicker*

It doesn't say who or how these people are related other than that the children are his grandchildren, which would make their parents either his children or his in-law children. In other words, his own kids probably beat him up. I wonder if he had molested them too?

I do have to disagree with this. The children endured one of the most unspeakable acts anyone could have to go through and when the parents found out they protected their young. I think I would have done the same thing if anyone were to touch my lil ones.

A man was in an argument with his daughter in the parking lot of the Newberry County jail Sunday night — holding a blood-soaked towel to his ear — when a police officer asked him what happened.

“I molested my grandchildren,” the 54-year-old man said.

“What?” the officer, Jason Stuher, said.

“I’ve been molesting my grandchildren,” the man repeated.

Stuher told the man to sit on the ground until he could figure out what to do. Nearby, one of the man’s daughters was “hysterical and barely understandable,” according to Stuher’s report filed with the Newberry Police Department.

The man’s daughter told Stuher that her father had been molesting her daughter and her sister’s daughter. Sunday night, the man’s adult children confronted their father about the abuse, and he admitted it.

That’s when the man’s children started “whoopin’ up on him,” according to Newberry Police Chief Jackie Swindler.

The man escaped his children’s fury on foot but was picked up by one of his daughters, who drove him to the Newberry County jail.

The man has an arrest record that dates back to 1978 and includes arrests for driving under the influence, public intoxication, assault and battery, failure to pay cab fare, armed robbery, simple possession of marijuana and use of a vehicle without permission.

His arrest record does not include any sex crimes, and he is not a registered sex offender.

I HAVE been in the position of having a sexually assaulted family member. My sister was raped at age 11 by a teenager (I was in my 20's by that time). My granddaughter was repeatedly raped by her stepfather. While I (and other family members) wanted to KILL the persons that did this (and had ample opportunity), no one did.

The example set for my family was far more important than a moment of gratification. How it was (and continues to be) handled is a far more valuable lesson for all involved.

I've dug pretty deep, and I just can't find it in me to be horrified at the example these folks have set for their children. Sorry. This guy deserved what he got, and he got what he deserved. These kids will live secure in the knowledge that their parents would do anything to protect them. It's not like someone said something untoward to one of them and they jumped him. The guy was molesting his fucking grandkids. Admittedly. Without shame. Too bad the heart attack didn't kill him.

I am not horrified. Never said that. Just pointing out that way too many people think violence is a problem solving tool. I am saddened that people think beating the crap out of someone is how you show love/loyalty to kids. That sounds like Jerry Springer show shit. ( It can just as easily be said that those kids learned to fear the wrath of their parents. )

Vigilante justice went out long ago for a reason. Too many stupid people got it wrong. While our current system is far from perfect, it does work better most of the time. I would like to see it tougher and will continue to work to see that it does.

I don't fault the parents, just wish they had done it different.

Using your logic, you have just said that because I did not attack the kid that raped my sister, or beat up my SIL for raping my granddaughter, I do not support or protect them. Nothing is further from the truth.

Oh, DV, your logic and rationality always make me feel vaguely ashamed of myself for my hair trigger emotional responses to this sort of thing. I totally see what your saying, and the logical part of me (though it rarely emerges from its slumber) totally agrees. Agreed, there is no cure except death. I think he should be put to death as he serves no purpose being locked up forever. It's just not the job of an emotional lynch mob.

Helps to have 4 abused children and their irate families, which I wouldn't be surprised if they hadn't been molested being this was the grandfather, he didn't start molesting family members with the grandchildren, I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't taking out some of their past frustrations out on him.
To each their own way of life, but don't come near my kids, I will take it to the limit.

Now the man is in a Columbia hospital recovering. Newberry County detectives are waiting for him to be released so they can charge him with molesting three of his grandchildren, each under the age of 10, and one additional child in the family.

Investigators say the man will face charges of criminal sexual conduct with a minor and committing a lewd act on a child - charges that carry a combined maximum of 40 years in prison. But the man's children have not been charged with assault for beating their father.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said he is evaluating the case and will confer with 8th Circuit Solicitor Jerry Peace before deciding what, if any, charges to file.

"They gave street justice - certainly nothing in the law allows that," Foster said. "As a parent, I can certainly understand somebody being upset. But as a law enforcement professional, they need to let law enforcement take care of the problem."

The man molested three of his grandchildren while he was baby-sitting, Johnson said. Investigators do not think the man molested anyone outside of his family. The man's children are cooperating with investigators, Foster said, but "they don't have much to say about the beat down."

A person who answered the phone at the man's Newberry home said family members declined to comment.
