Washoe County sheriff's deputies arrested a 21-year-old mother of three this morning on charges of child endangerment and being under the influence of drugs.
Shahida Reed remains in the Washoe County Jail in lieu of $23,200 bail.
Reed was pulled over Monday morning in the 4000 block of Sun Valley Blvd. and was uncooperative with officers, refusing to give them her correct identity, spokesperson Brooke Keast said. Traveling with her were five people and Reed's 5-month-old, who was unrestrained, Keast said. Deputies determined that Reed was under the influence of drugs and arrested her.
Upon her arrest, deputies said they also learned that Reed had left two of her children, a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old, unattended in a room in the 100 block of West 1st Avenue in Sun Valley.
Police went to Reed's room to check on the children, and discovered drug paraphernalia and several small bags of methamphetamine in a diaper bag next to the sleeping children, Keast said.
Child Protective Services took all three of Reed's children and placed them in foster care.
Reed was charged with four counts of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, three counts of child endangerment, being under the Influence of controlled substance, failure to appear and providing false identification to avoid arrest.
During the traffic stop, deputies also discovered that a passenger in the car, Robert Dale Gilmer, 26, of Reno, had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear, Keast said. Gilmer was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and one count of possession of marijuana. His bail has been set at $1,954.
