BROOKLYN, IL (KTVI - FOX2now.com)
A suspect punched a Brooklyn, IL, police officer in the face early Sunday morning before causing a head-on, car-truck collision, Brooklyn police chief, Delbert Marion said. Marion told Fox 2 police found three guns inside the suspect's truck but the truck itself turned out to be the weapon that caused the most damage. Marion said one of his officers pulled over near the rented, red, Ford F-150 pickup at 4th and Jefferson around 4:00 A.M.
"The driver was making some kind of movement in the front seat as if he was trying to hide something," Marion said. "When the officer walked up to the car, the driver struck him in the face with his fist."
He said the men in the truck took off down Route 3 the officer pursued but that Pursuit ended quickly; the truck crashing into a black Honda Accord; the woman driving it seriously injured with a "bone-through-skin" compound fracture of her leg; rescuers having to cut her from the car; the suspects not stopping to help.
"She was injured pretty bad. once they removed her from the vehicle, they had to immediately take her to the hospital," Marion said.
He said three suspects ran from the truck. Police found one of them after a brief search with the help of a canine unit, hiding in nearby weeds.
Then, there was what police found inside the truck.
"There were two semi-automatic pistols found and a 12 guage shotgun...it's kind of uncommon to ride around with that kind of artillery in your vehicle," Marion said.
The suspects also left money in the truck, blood, too.
So police believe the suspects may injured, perhaps no longer armed with the truck or their guns, but still dangerous.
Police had yet to release the identities of anyone involved; but said they knew who the remaining two suspects were. The chief said his officer had a bruised cheek, but was not hurt. Copyright © 2009, KTVI-TV
