A DeLand woman angry that police arrested her best friend for kicking an officer was also arrested Thursday when she hit a second officer in the head with a cell phone so hard the phone broke, police said.
Melissa Ann Seestrom, 18, was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and disorderly intoxication as she physically protested the arrest of Amanda Gail Reidinger, 18, also of DeLand, police said.
Seestrom is being held on $1,500 bail while Reidinger, charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and battery-domestic violence, is being held without bail, according to a Volusia County Branch Jail booking officer.
According to a DeLand police report, Reidinger flagged down an officer at 3:11 a.m. near 238 E. Plymouth Ave., complaining that her mother's boyfriend had hit her in the mouth. When officers spoke to the mother, they learned Reidinger, who had also been drinking, had grabbed her mother by the hair and pulled her out of a car, then kicked her and punched her, officers wrote in their report.
As an officer tried to place her in the back of a patrol car, Reidinger kicked him in the chest several times. The officers then restrained her with wrist and ankle cuffs, the report said.
That's when Seestrom protested the arrest, the charging affidavit states.
Seestrom was twice told to go inside her home but she started yelling profanities at the officers. She walked up to one, blew cigarette smoke in his face and then struck him in the head, the report states.
"As I moved my head the defendant connected with my right ear breaking the cell phone," wrote the officer, who was not hurt by the blow.
