Death Penalty Sought for Baby Killer Ed Otero

SEBRING, FLORIDA — Prosecutors announced Tuesday they will seek the death penalty against Edgar Michael Otero, who is facing charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse. Otero was indicted in January by a Highlands County Grand Jury in connection to the November murder of Alexa Hall, a 3-month-old girl.

Originally, investigators thought that Hall died of shaken baby syndrome, but an autopsy later showed that she died of blunt force trauma.

On the morning of Nov. 12, the baby's mother Brandy Hall and Otero brought Alexa to the Florida Hospital emergency room for an unknown sickness. According to Otero's arrest report, the baby was brain dead. She was airlifted to St. Joseph's Hospital, where she was eventually taken off life-support.

Otero has been held in the Highlands County Jail since November without bond.

SEBRING - It took roughly three-and-a-half hours for a Highlands County jury to find Edgar Otero guilty of the lesser offense of manslaughter in connection with the November 2007 death of 3-month-old Alexa Hall, the daughter of his former girlfriend.

Otero, 31, was also found guilty of aggravated child abuse. He faces up to 15 years for manslaughter and 30 years for the abuse charge. A pre-sentence investigation was ordered and sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 26 at 9 a.m.

Otero sentenced to 45 years in baby death case

SEBRING - The family of 3-month-old Alexa Hall had some harsh words for Edgar Otero before he was sentenced to 45 years in prison for his role in the infant's 2007 death.

"The devastation that was forced on us by this act of violence has severely impacted our whole family," said grandmother Sandy Carro, who read to the court a letter she'd written. "How could someone be such a monster, to hurt a helpless little baby? I ask that question over and over again."

In January, a jury found Otero, 31, guilty of the lesser offense of manslaughter, as well as aggravated child abuse, a first-degree felony. He was initially indicted for first-degree murder.

Otero was in the back of a car trying to calm down a fussy Alexa in the early morning hours of Nov. 12, 2007 while his former girlfriend, Brandy Hall, was inside a home setting up a mattress for bed.

When Hall came back out a few minutes later, she found her child had stopped breathing. Baby Alexa was first taken to Florida Hospital Heartland Division before being transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where she was pronounced brain dead and later died on Nov. 13, 2007.

What a beautiful little stone. I still think the DP would have been best for this creep, but then I think all child killers should die, and in a similar manner that they kill their victims, painfully and most times, for an extended period of time.
