STRATFORD -- A local woman faces animal-cruelty charges after police said she left her three dogs, a cat and a rabbit alone in her home several days without food or water.
Tamar Stern, 22, of Fiddler Green, was charged Tuesday with five counts of cruelty to animals, three counts of failure to have a dog license and four counts of failure to have pets vaccinated for rabies. She was released on a written promise to appear in court.
Police said that Monday they began receiving complaints from neighbors about dogs barking in Stern's home.
When officers visited the home Tuesday, they said Stern was not home, but when they looked in a window, they allegedly saw animal feces on the floor.
After officers gained access to the home, they found that the premises was littered with animal feces, police said. Several food and water dishes placed around the home all were empty, police said. A couple of the dogs were in closed off rooms. One of them, a pit bull puppy, had dried feces on its fur, police said.
The animals were seized and turned them over to a Milford veterinarian for examination.
Stern later came to the animal shelter looking for the animals, and while there, police said she admitted leaving the animals alone because she said she is in the process of moving to Stamford.۩
