Post Seniors’ stories are thanks enough for teen helpers

Oh, the stories they heard. There was the Spanish-speaking woman with Alzheimer’s. There was the couple who had provided a home for 89 foster kids in seven years. And there was the elderly woman who was 18 when she went on three dates with her husband and married him on the third. They stayed married for 50 years until his death 20 years ago.

“I love old people. I love how they have all these stories. They have all these experiences, and I learn a lot from them,” said 16-year-old Rebecca Leising, a Williamsville South student.

Leising was among 10 students from all over Western New York— Olean, Dunkirk, Fredonia and more —who volunteered with the Young Christians at Work program during Holy Week. It is sponsored by the Youth and Young Adult Ministry Department of the Diocese of Buffalo.

That is really heartwarming. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents as a child and I am a much better person for it. They told some great stories too. Kudos to these teens.

When I was in FCCLA (the new FHA) we would go to the retirement home fairly often. I loved talking to the old folks, they really do have the best stories.
This planet has - or rather had - a problem, which was this: most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movement of small green pieces of paper, which was odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy.

I used to work with the Elderly and plan to again someday, it's a great learning experience.
