~Humor is an inversion of reality. It is the ironic, the witty, the dark play on life.~
First post here...
It has been my experience that mothballs around the perimeter of a house deters all sorts of varmints, including rats, mice, skunks, bugs, etc.
Only my experience. You have to replace them often (here in AZ, at least - they melt) but they work wonderfully.
Mothballs are cheap and easy.
RIP Natalie.
:(
If there was a "lot of blood", Natalie might have been alive at the beginning of the attack. I hope not.Munch said there was a lot of blood and the rats apparently tore the tissue from the baby's leg and face.
I find that a house infested with rats and a baby living in such conditions is negligent and that will remain regardless of the autopsy results. IF they baby did indeed die under the circumstances other than rat bites, I sure hope it was not extreme negligence or abuse. We have all read countless stories were things could be this could be that and we speculate, how is this one different? because they are poor and live with rats? I lived in filth too including a rat issue once as a child got a bad infection due to the damn bites, so excuse me if my personal feelings are clouding this a bit. I realize I am biased, dead baby, rats, yeah pretty disgusting and sickens me.
I will gladly retract any ill feelings expressed to the parents if it turns out to be natural causes, 'cause I wish nothing so terrible as the grief of a loss of a child. STILL the fuckn' rats are a problem for me. Baby shouldn't have been living under those conditions, and folks that's my opinion.
RA, on a side note, so very sorry for your friends loss. My sympathies.

This is only the second time in my life I've heard of this type of thing.
Years ago before I found Demon there was an article in the news... a little boy, born 6 weeks or so premature--finally released from NICU and allowed to go home. The "mom" takes him home to a NYC tenement, and the little guy died that very night from rat bites. His little fingers were chewed off plus lots of other injuries. Still haunts me.
The "mom" never heard a thing, yet, there was a lot of blood. I never could find an update on that case but, I do blame the mom. How can one bring home a newborn and not be within a couple of feet from your child at all times? Especially a preemie just released from NICU.
RIP Baby girl.

Pages five through eight describe behaviors of rats and attacks.
I remember always hearing stories about rats and roaches attacking babies.
Dear Mommy...I see you smile down there below...are those tears of joy you show? I'm glad you're happy, although you lied...I'd love to be right by your side...but by your choice, I view from above...tell my Grandparents I send my love...it's Beautiful here, is all I can say...your life will go on... without me in your way. Love Caylee XOXO......
NO JUSTICE FOR CAYLEE - copyright that!
I see a great deal of things in my head when I read this story and all of everyone's responses. I'm not sure how I feel about this...
I do think that this is extremely sad. Hurricane Katrina fucked up the entire ecosystem in New Orleans. The fact that there are rats running around so freely is indicative of this. Rats are nasty, vile creatures. They find a way - no matter what. If this baby did pass, and they were already creepin around, then I agree-it would not take much time for them to get to that baby. As for the blood, it's perfectly feasable to have so much. If the rats were right there in the walls or the floors-they could have gotten there quick enough that the blood may still have been flowing slowly. The body doesn't turn to ice the istant death occurs.
As for living arrangements and cleanliness-I think that these were young parents who were trying to do something. They work, they take care of their children-that has all been voiced or confirmed. You do what you can-times are beyond tough. I am sure it wasn't their first choice to live where they live, but they were obviously trying to do the responsible thing by being adults and living the best they can. And unfortunately, not every area of New Orleans is sunshine and roses. There has not been full recovery throughout and it will take a great deal of time to achieve if there ever truly is. I can't fault anyone for trying to live and survive.
I feel deeply for these parents. Can any one imagine having to live the rest of your life knowing your baby not only died at 3 months old, but was literally eaten by rats? I personally can't imagine the picture that is imprinted in their minds. That's horror movie shit-it's nto supposed to happen for real.
God bless you little Natalie-you only had 3 months here-but you will now have a lifetime with angels and love...be happy baby!
I think your responses are probably my favorite to read. You have such logic and I almost always agree with what you say. My youngest daughter, Jovie, is almost 3 months old and it sickens my heart to think of finding her in that way...or anyone for that matter. It sounds to me like the parents did what they could. On this website, though, I can see where we would all want to find someone to place the blame upon...but in some cases, we just can't. I really hope this doesn't come back a few months down the line as something actually having to do with the parents.
1st of all poor little angel. she was so beautiful
2nd of all what the fuck kinda comment is this on this picture
http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/inde...ageID=25566435

I have tried hunting for the PSA. Many many years ago there was an announcement for parents living in the ghettos in St. Louis, telling them not to put their babies to bed with formula or breast milk left in their mouths. Several deaths were reported of rats smelling the milk, crawling into the baby's mouth, suffocating and killing them. That may be a possibility here.
Who in their right mind would think of a rat crawling into the mouth of a child and eating away at the tissue while suffocating them? But they do...and have. All the infants this happened to had part of their noses eaten off as well.

I am going to hope she had LOL on the picture already and just added the RIP. Otherwise it is weird.
Edit~ I checked all her albums and that looks like what she, or someone else, did. Just added RIP onto what was already there under the pics. I feel so bad for them. They looked happy, kids happy, well fed, clean. Showing lots of love and affection in all the pictures. Even what little you can see of the house looks cluttered, but clean and tidy, not filthy. Poor baby, poor mommy.

I have to agree with Rotten Apple. I think that this baby perhaps died of SIDS and the rats got to her before her parents realized the baby had passed. Hell this place was littered with rats, the city was providing rat poison for the residents to use. This means that rats were pratically taking over.
Another thing to point out, I have heard that when a rat bites, the saliva acts some what like a anesthetic.Could it be that the rats bit her and no one actually heard the baby whimpering?
In any event, this story is horrific. I for one, am terrified of rodents!![]()
They took the 14 month old into protective custody, though...
The couple's other child, a 14-month old boy, was taken into protective custody by the state Thursday, according to Trey Williams, communication director with Department of Social Services. The child is in foster care in the New Orleans area, he said.
Williams could not provide specifics about what caused officials to remove the child from his parents, saying only that officials are continuing to investigate the matter.
"Removing a child from home is never easy decision and one we take seriously," he said. It's also one never done alone, but in conjunction with law enforcement, courts and community partners."

I would think that they had to do that as a matter of precaution, because they have no idea how his sister died yet.

Now that I have seen those pics-I am truly distraught. They are just a young couple-young family. Just trying to make it and do the right thing by their children. This is so very horrifying...
On the other hand, I am thinking they need to look at this landlord. How could this ass continue to let two babies live in these types of conditions. If he did in fact forgo the repairs for his own personal gain-well then buddy-you jsut helped a baby be food for rats. Stuff that in your pocket-fucker...

Formula is so 'sweet' smelling, if the baby vomited in the crib or aspirated on the vomit (inhaled and choked)...the rat or rats may have been drawn to the smell....If the vomit was on her face...well...the rats...
Likewise for her leg, although I would more then venture a guess that the leg was targeted from the diaper...
I will simply add this...
I cannot imagine parents standing by and allowing rats to eat their baby...
I cannot imagine parents sleeping or being awoken and hearing a "I AM HURT" cry (those of us who are parents KNOW that cry...the cry that makes a parents heart POUND out their chest) and ignoring it...
I cannot imagine the horror of finding your child~eaten...
But then again, I cannot imagine many of the things I read here on DD....
"So go out and live real good and I promise you'll get beat up real bad. But, in a little while after you're dead, you'll be rotted away anyway. It's not gonna matter if you have a few scars. It will matter if you didn't live."
"God spoke to Balaam through his ass, and He has been speaking through asses ever since. And, if on meeting someone, right away you recognize what they are, listen to them anyway'."

They are moving:http://www.nola.com/news/index.ssf/2...ple_whose.htmlThe mother of a dead 3-month-old daughter found covered in rat bites said Friday that she heard rodents moving in the walls of her home.
[...]
"You can hear them in the walls,'' Laine said of the rats. "We did everything we could to protect our baby. I would never ever hurt my children.''
Laine said that the family is moving into a cousin's house.
[...]
Natalie's father, Robbie Hill, told WRNO 99.5 FM this morning that he did what he could to protect his two children.
Hill said comments by the station's listeners that he and his wife didn't properly care for their infant daughter were heartbreaking.
"I did know they had a rat problem. I was doing what I had to do. I put out pellets, poison and traps," Hill said in the interview with WRNO's Michael Castner. "They should have trapped up that rat before it did what it did to my baby girl."
Natalie was in her crib and covered in hundreds of bites, with the most severe injuries to her nose and right leg, police said.
Rick Dietz, general curator at the Audubon Zoo, said it is entirely plausible that a large rodent would attack a 3-month-old baby and even kill it.
[...]
"They can be very destructive to other animals or even humans, if put in a situation where they're hungry and there's nothing else to feed on," Dietz said.
Typically, mice and rats will seek out their food in garbage dumps or pantries, rather than attack and feed on other animals, he said. Rodents would also sooner attack dead creatures than live ones, since the dead make for easier targets. But Dietz believes a large rat could kill a baby, since infants would have a harder time fending it off.
"I'd say it's possible," he said. "We have some big rats around here that could do damage in short amount of time.''
Hill said he believed his daughter died before the attack.
"If a rat was to get to that baby's nose, we could have heard if that baby would scream. That baby had to be dead before them rats got to her," Hill said. "If a rat was to crawl up in your crib and bite you on the nose one time, my little girl would have jumped, possibly swung her arms and the rat should have ran."

I am not looking to blame just for the sake of blaming and certainly NOT to make me feel better. I don't come here and read about dead babies and throw stones to feel better, though at times it does help. I come here to give to those who cannot speak a voice. I look for truth.
I looked at every picture. What I see is a young loving couple, with two adorable children doing the best they can with what they have. I will be shocked, very much so to find out the death of this baby was no more than natural causes. I pray. I hope that is only the case. If what I am seeing in those pictures is their home, it certainly doesn't look uninhabitable.
I have seen many, many pictures of babies who appeared to beloved only to die from neglect or worse. I will continue to ask questions as I see it necessary and at the end I hope to know the truth so that the littlest victim may have that at the very least. I don't know these people but they look like they loved little Natalie, and perhaps that hurts even more knowing she was loved and wanted and taken in such a terrible way. The questions still begs, what happened that ultimately ended Natalie's life?
Natalie Marie Hill was a vision of love. It broke my heart seeing her picture. I really like this picture of mama and baby...
Rest in peace sweet one....my deepest sympathies to those who must live their lives without her.

Silva, you know I adore you. I however disagree about being judgemental of where the parents live. Especially in these times, we cannot always pick where we are going to live when we are young (like them) and in an economy that is struggling just to put food on the table for most families. There is a little factor in all of that its called Cash, the Green Nasty Ugly stuff most would sell their soul for these days. Some have it, some don't, and sometimes its damn near impossible to get 2,000 to put up just to move somewhere.

hehehe sorry about that earlier. I guess I should have explained. Like harley tech said, those pictures said NEW so that's why I took it the way I did. Didn't mean to be offensive or anything. Just seemed kinda nutty. But I can see how she just added RIP to the end. My bad.
I still hope that the baby was dead first because I really don't want to think anyone ignored the cries of the baby. I mean that's what baby monitors are for. To hear every little movement.
I understand that better than you know IO, you have no idea how I was raised and under what conditions because of the ole' mighty dollar as my father used to say. When it comes to the livelihood of your children tho you don't leave them to live in a rat infested house. I let you in on some insight. As a baby, my little sister almost choked to death on a fucking huge roach that crawled into her baby mouth, had she not been sleeping by my mother should would have died....hell, she almost did. I will never forget that night and that was a roach, I can't imagine a rat, a fuckn' rat! And as much as I feel for these parents and most sincerely do as losing a child the way they did us inconceivable----they should have moved out of the rat hell hole.
Btw, they are moving in with relatives now....just a little too damn late.
